  1. Drain engine coolant.
  2. Remove timing belt.
  3. Remove No. 2 idler pulley.
  4. Remove water inlet and inlet housing assembly: Disconnect the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing. Remove the 2 bolts holding the water inlet housing to the water pump. (Scheme 11) Disconnect the water inlet housing from the front water bypass joint, and remove the water inlet and inlet housing assembly. Remove the "O" ring from the water inlet housing.
  5. Remove water pump: Remove the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts, nut, water pump and gasket. (Scheme 12) Remove the "O" ring from the water bypass pipe.

  1. Inspect water pump: Visually check the air hole and water hole for coolant leakage. (Scheme 13) If leakage is found, replace the water pump and timing belt. Turn the pulley, and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly. If necessary, replace the water pump.
  2. Inspect fluid coupling: Remove the 4 nuts and fan from the fluid coupling. (Scheme 14) Check that the fluid coupling is not damaged and that no silicon oil leaks. (Scheme 15) If necessary, replace the fluid coupling. Reinstall the fan to the fluid coupling with the 4 nuts. Torque: 8.5 N.m (85 kgf.cm, 75 in.lbf)
  3. Inspect fan pulley bracket: Check the turning smoothness of the fan pulley. (Scheme 16) If necessary, replace the pulley bracket.
  4. Inspect timing belt components.

Scheme 17: INSTALLATION
  1. Install water pump: Install a new "O" ring to the water bypass pipe end. (Scheme 12) Apply soapy water to the "O" ring. Connect the water pump to the water bypass pipe end. Install the water pump and a new gasket with the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut. Uniformly tighten the bolts, stud bolts and nut in several passes. Torque: Bolt: 21 N.m (215 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) Stud bolt and nut: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
  2. Install water inlet and inlet housing assembly: Remove any old packing (FIPG) material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the water inlet housing and water pump. Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing (FIPG) material from the gasket surfaces and sealing groove. Thoroughly clean all components to remove all the loose material. Using a non-residue solvent, clean both sealing surfaces. Apply seal packing to the sealing groove of water inlet housing as shown in the illustration. (Scheme 17) Seal packing: Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent: Install a nozzle that has been cut to a 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 in.) opening. Parts must be assembled within 3 minutes of application. Otherwise the material must be removed and reapplied. Immediately remove nozzle from the tube and reinstall cap. Install a new "O" ring to the water inlet housing. Apply soapy water on the "O" ring. Attach the water inlet housing end to the front water by pass joint hole. Install the water inlet and housing assembly with the 2 bolts. (Scheme 11) Alternately tighten the bolts. Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) Each bolt length is indicated in the illustration. (Scheme 11) Bolt length: 76 mm (3.00 in.) for A 22 mm (0.87 in.) for B Connect the water bypass hose to the water inlet housing.
  3. Install No. 2 idler pulley.
  4. Install timing belt.
  5. Fill with engine coolant.
  6. Start engine and check for engine coolant leaks.
  7. Recheck engine coolant level.

Scheme 21: REMOVAL
  1. Remove engine under cover.
  2. Drain engine coolant.
  3. Disconnect radiator reservoir hose from radiator.
  4. Disconnect upper radiator hose from radiator.
  5. Disconnect lower radiator hose from radiator.
  6. Disconnect A/T oil cooler hoses from radiator.
  7. Remove the 2 clips and No. 2 fan shroud.
  8. Remove the 4 bolts and radiator assembly. (Scheme 22)
  9. Remove the 4 bolts and No. 1 fan shroud.

  1. Remove the 4 bolts, 2 pipes, 2 bushings and 2 radiator supports.
  2. Remove radiator cap.
  3. Remove drain plug.
  4. Assemble SST (09230-01010): WARNING: If this adjustment is not done, the claw may be damaged. Install the claw to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part "A" as shown in the diagram. (Scheme 23) While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension "B" shown in the diagram is 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 in.).
  5. Uncaulk lock plates Using SST (09230-01010) to release the caulking, squeeze the handle until stopped by the stopper bolt. (Scheme 24)
  6. Remove tanks and "O" rings: Lightly tap the radiator port (inlet or outlet) with a softfaced hammer, and remove the tank. (Scheme 25) Remove the "O" ring.

  1. Inspect the lock plate for damage. If the sides of the lock plate groove are deformed, reassembly of the tank will be impossible. (Scheme 26) Therefore, first correct any deformation with pliers or similar object. Water leakage will result if the bottom of the lock plate groove is damaged or dented. Therefore, repair or replace if necessary.
  2. Install NEW "O" rings and tanks: After checking that there are no foreign objects in the lock plate groove, install the new "O" ring without twisting it. Install the tank without damaging the "O" ring. (Scheme 27) Tap the lock plate with a soft-faced hammer so that there is no gap between it and the tank. (Scheme 28)
  3. Assemble SST (09230-01010,09231-14010): Install the punch assembly to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part "A" as shown in the illustration. (Scheme 29) While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension "B" shown in the diagram. Dimension "B": 8.4 mm (0.34 in.)
  4. Caulk lock plate: Lightly press SST (09230-01010) against the lock plate in the order shown in the illustration. After repeating this a few times, fully caulk the lock plate by squeezing the handle until stopped by the stopper bolt. see scheme 32 Check the lock plate height (H) after completing the caulking. Plate height (H): 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 in.) If not within the specified height, adjust the stopper bolt of the handle again and caulk again. see scheme 33
  5. Install drain plug: Install a new "O" ring to the drain plug. Apply soapy water to the "O" ring. Install the drain plug.
  6. Check for water leaks: Using SST (09230-01010), plug the inlet and outlet pipes of the radiator. see scheme 34 Using a radiator cap tester, apply pressure to the radiator. Test pressure: 147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm 2, 21 psi) NOTE: On radiators with resin tanks, there is a clearance between the core plate and tank plate where a minute amount of air will remain, giving the appearance of an air leak when the radiator is submerged in water. Therefore, before performing the water leak test, first swirl the radiator around in the water until all air bubbles disappear. see scheme 35 Check for water leaks.
  7. Install the 2 radiator supports, 2 bushings and 2 pipes with the 4 bolts. Torque: 12.7 N.m (130 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf).
  8. Install radiator cap.
