Steering Column - Tilt: Removal & Installation Toyota RAV4 I

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove screw securing horn pad and remove horn pad. Disconnect horn electrical connector(s). Remove lock nut and washer.
2. Mark steering shaft and steering wheel for installation reference. Install steering wheel puller and remove steering wheel from shaft. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000) .

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-123453-S12543308612001092500000) or STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG. Remove instrument cluster lower finish panel. Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
2. Disconnect combination switch electrical connector. Remove combination switch mounting screws, and remove combination switch. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000) .

Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel, upper and lower steering column covers and combination switch (if necessary). Disconnect ignition switch harness connectors.
2. If shear bolt studs are accessible, use a hacksaw to cut slots in exposed studs. Using a screwdriver, remove studs.
3. If shear bolt studs are recessed or hard to reach with hacksaw, center punch studs. Using a drill bit and screw extractor, remove studs. Remove ignition switch and lock cylinder.

Installation

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW shear bolts. Tighten shear bolts finger tight. Ensure proper operation of ignition switch and lock cylinder.
2. Tighten shear bolts until heads break off. Install combination switch, upper and lower steering column covers and steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000) .

Removal & Installation (Land Cruiser/LX470)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD or «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG»(ref-123453-S37615070092001092500000). Remove steering column upper and lower covers. (Scheme 11) Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable.
2. Remove scuff plate and cowl trim. Remove cluster finish panel. Remove lower No. 1 panel and left-side lower panel. Remove No. 2 heater to register duct from under steering column.
3. Mark intermediate shaft and control valve shaft for installation reference. Disconnect No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove hole cover.
4. Remove steering column assembly. Remove hose clamp. Remove No. 2 hole cover. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Scheme 11

Removal & Installation (4Runner)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG»(ref-123453-S37615070092001092500000). Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11) Remove left-side lower finish panel. Remove No. 2 heater to register duct from under steering column.
2. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable. Remove brake pedal return spring. Mark intermediate shafts No. 2, "U" joints No. 2 and control valve for installation reference. Remove intermediate shaft No. 2. Remove column hole cover and column hole cover No. 2 set bolt.
3. Remove steering column assembly with "U" joint No. 2. Disconnect "U" joint No. 2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Removal & Installation (Previa)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG»(ref-123453-S37615070092001092500000). Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11) Remove door scuff plate, cowl side trim and instrument cluster lower finish panel. Remove knee panel.
2. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Disconnect shift control rod. Mark sliding yoke and steering gear shaft for installation reference. Remove pinch bolts and separate sliding yoke from steering gear shaft.
3. Disconnect steering column harness connectors. Remove steering column mounting bolts and remove steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Removal & Installation (RAV4)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG»(ref-123453-S37615070092001092500000). Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11) Remove lower left-side instrument finish panel and panel insert from under steering column. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable. Remove No. 2 heater to register duct.
2. Mark shaft assembly and control valve for installation reference. Disconnect No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove steering column assembly. Disconnect steering column harness connectors.
3. Remove No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly. Remove column hole cover. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Removal & Installation (Tacoma)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-123453-S12543308612001092500000) or STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG. Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11) Remove left-side lower finish panel. Remove No. 2 heater to register duct from under steering column.
2. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable. Disconnect junction block No. 1. Disconnect transmission control cable assembly from column shift lever assembly.
3. On 2WD models, mark intermediate No. 2 shaft and control shaft for installation reference. Disconnect intermediate No. 2 shaft and remove. Remove column hole cover. Remove steering column assembly. Remove sliding yoke.
4. On 4WD models, mark intermediate No. 2 shaft and control shaft for installation reference. Disconnect intermediate No. 2 shaft and remove. Remove column hole cover and column hole cover No. 2 set bolt. Remove steering column assembly. Mark "U" joint No. 2 and main shaft for installation reference. Remove "U" joint No. 2 and column hole cover No. 2.
5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Removal & Installation (T100)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-123453-S12543308612001092500000) or STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG. Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11) Remove door scuff plate, cowl side trim and instrument cluster lower finish panel.
2. Remove duct heater to register No. 2 from under steering column. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable.
3. On A/T models, mark cap nut and parking lock cable for installation reference. Loosen cap nut and remove parking lock cable. On 2WD model, mark intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. On 4WD model, mark intermediate shaft and worm gear valve shaft. Remove intermediate shaft assembly and sliding with shaft york sub-assembly. Remove steering column assembly.
4. On MT models, remove steering column assembly.
5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Removal & Installation (Sienna)

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel. See «STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD»(ref-123453-S12543308612001092500000) or STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG. Remove front door inside scuff plate, cowl side trim. Remove lower left-side finish panel and left-side lower instrument panel. Remove upper and lower column covers. (Scheme 11)
2. Remove combination switch with spiral cable. Remove spiral cable. Mark intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. Disconnect shaft assembly. Disconnect transmission control cable assembly. Remove intermediate shaft assembly. Remove steering column assembly.
3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-123453-S27459328152001092500000).

Scheme 12

1. Remove No. 2 lower cover. Mark shaft assembly and main shaft assembly for reassembly reference. Remove intermediate shaft assembly. (Scheme 12) Remove transponder key coil with key cylinder lamp assembly. Remove key cylinder lamp assembly.
2. Using.12-.16" (3-4 mm) drill, drill tapered head column bracket bolts and use a screw extractor to remove. Remove column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
3. To remove column tube support, remove bolt. Remove tube support with lower tube attachment and tube attachment from tube support.
4. To remove energy absorbing plates, remove energy absorbing clip. Remove energy absorbing plate and energy absorbing guide. Remove 4 tension springs.
5. To remove tilt lever, remove spring nut and lever. Remove 2 bushing from column upper tube. Remove tilt lever link.
6. Remove column upper tube with main shaft assembly. Remove tilt lever retainer. Remove main shaft assembly. Remove turn signal bracket. Remove tilt steering pawl.
