PRECAUTION

  1. NOTICE FOR INITIALIZATION NOTE: When disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal, initialize the following systems after the cable is reconnected.   2. TROUBLESHOOTING PRECAUTIONS If a terminal contact point malfunction or part installation problem occurs, removal and reinstallation of the suspected part may return the system to normal. However, be aware that the normal condition may only be temporary. Before disconnecting connectors or removing/installing parts, determine the malfunctioning area by checking and writing down the vehicle condition at the time the malfunction occurred (DTC outputs etc.). Be sure to check for DTCs related to other systems. The pre-collision system may be influenced by malfunctions in other systems.
  3. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS When removing and installing the ECU, sensor, switch or other pre-collision system related parts, perform the following: Make sure that the power switch is off unless otherwise specified in the inspection procedure. After the removal/installation, check for DTCs and confirm that a normal system code is output.

  1. PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM The pre-collision system optimizes and activates occupant protection equipment (see below) to attempt to reduce damage due to a collision.
  2. The Driving Support ECU Assembly determines if a collision is unavoidable based on object position, speed and track information. If the Driving Support ECU Assembly determines that a collision is unavoidable, it transmits this information to the following areas using CAN communication: Seat belt control ECU (initiates control of pre-collision seat belts) Brake booster with master cylinder (skid control ECU) (activates pre-collision brake assist system) Brake booster with master cylinder (skid control ECU) (activates pre-collision brake) When operating as a result of sudden braking: The brake booster with master cylinder (skid control ECU) uses brake pressure information and other data to determine if the driver has suddenly applied the brakes. If so, the brake booster with master cylinder (skid control ECU) sends a signal to the seat belt control ECU through CAN communication and the pre-collision seat belts operate.
  3. OUTLINE OF PRE-COLLISION SEAT BELT CONTROL The pre-collision seat belts operate depending on what the sensor detects, or whether sudden braking has occurred. The pre-collision seat belt motor retracts the seat belt to enhance pretensioner effectiveness. Operating condition Refer to the sensor and sudden braking descriptions under "Outline of Pre-Collision System" (see above).
  4. OUTLINE OF PRE-COLLISION BRAKE ASSIST CONTROL The pre-collision brake assist operates depending on what the sensor detects. The system then enters standby mode before a collision. When the driver depresses the brake pedal, brake fluid pressure is increased to improve fluid pressure response and improve the rate of deceleration. Operative condition Refer to the sensor description under "Outline of Pre-Collision System" (see above). When the driver depresses the brake pedal after the Driving Support ECU Assembly determines that a collision is high possibility: Brake fluid pressure is increased at the same time the driver depresses the brake pedal. When the driver depresses the brake pedal before the Driving Support ECU Assembly determines that a collision is unavoidable: Brake fluid pressure is increased at the same time that the Driving Support ECU Assembly receives a pre-collision sensor signal (indicating that other vehicles or objects are in front of the vehicle).
  5. OUTLINE OF PRE-COLLISION BRAKE CONTROL The pre-collision brake operation is performed depending on what the sensor detects. This system can be canceled by the pre-collision system cancel switch assembly. HINT: While the pre-collision brake operation is canceled, the PCS indicator light on the combination meter turns on. Operating condition Refer to the sensor description under "Outline of Pre-Collision System" (see above). When the driving support ECU assembly determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system performs brake control (pre-collision brake operation) to reduce the vehicle speed.
  6. OPERATIVE CONDITION AND INOPERATIVE CONDITION OF EACH CONTROL (REVIEW) HINT: Each function will operate when all items marked (o) are satisfied.   7. CASES OF UNNECESSARY PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM OPERATION When the millimeter wave radar sensor detects an object in front of the vehicle under the conditions described below, the Driving Support ECU Assembly may determine that a collision is unavoidable, and activate the pre-collision system. This activation of the system is not abnormal. HINT: The pre-collision system will not activate when approaching safety cones or other plastic objects as they cannot be detected by the pre-collision sensor. The pre-collision system may or may not activate when the pre-collision sensor detects the following objects: people, bicycles, motorcycles, trees, animals and snow fences. Detection performance may deteriorate in the following conditions. Vehicle height changes signifiicantly (front of vehicle inclined either upward or downward) Millimeter wave radar sensor is misaligned (due to reinstallation or collision) Object Type Example Objects that cannot be detected Plastic items (safety cones) Objects that cannot be detected in a stable manner People, bicycles, motorcycles, trees, animals, snow fences, etc.

HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING

HINT

  1. Use the following procedure to troubleshoot the pre-collision system.
  2. The Techstream should be used in steps 3, 4 and 6.
  1. VEHICLE BROUGHT TO WORKSHOP NEXT: Go to next step
  2. INSPECT AUXILIARY BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the auxiliary battery voltage with the power switch off. Standard voltage 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the auxiliary battery before proceeding to the next step. NG --> CHARGE OR REPLACE AUXILIARY BATTERY OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Use the Techstream to check if the CAN communication system is functioning normally. Refer to «SYSTEM DIAGRAM»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/communication-devices/#can-communication-system-diagnostics-introduction) . Result DTC Condition Proceed to CAN DTC is not output A CAN DTC is output B B --> GO TO CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM.   4. CHECK FOR DTC Check for DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#pre-collision-system-diagnostics-introduction__dtc-check-clear) . Record the DTCs. Clear the DTCs. Recheck for DTCs. Attempt to duplicate the malfunction and check if the DTCs are output again. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#pre-collision-system-diagnostics-introduction__dtc-check-clear) . DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM

  1. CHECK DLC3 Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/hoistjack/#introduction) .
  2. FUNCTION OF WARNING INDICATOR If the pre-collision system is not functioning properly, the driver is warned by the PCS warning indicator on the combination meter. PCS Warning Indicator Detail DTC Blinking This PCS warning indicator appears when the seat belt control ECU and driving support ECU assembly detects a system malfunction o On This PCS warning indicator appears when the seat belt control ECU is in fail-safe mode. Refer to «FAIL-SAFE CHART»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#pre-collision-system-diagnostics-introduction__fail-safe-chart) - Initial check The initial check occurs when the power switch is off for more than 2 seconds, and then turned on (IG). The initial check consists of a pre-collision system diagnostic check with a duration of approximately 3 seconds. If a malfunction is detected during the initial check, PCS warning indicator is lights in the combination meter assembly. Constant check The seat belt control ECU and driving support ECU assembly constantly monitor the pre-collision system for malfunctions after the power switch is turned on (IG) and initial check (approximately 3 seconds) is completed. The PCS warning indicator blinking, when the constant check detects malfunctions in the pre-collision system.

DTC CHECK / CLEAR

  1. CHECK DTC Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision / Trouble Codes. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision 2 / Trouble Codes. Check the details of the DTC(s). Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(/toyota/prius-v/i-2011-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#pre-collision-system-diagnostics-introduction__diagnostic-trouble-code-chart) . HINT: As the driving support ECU assembly and seat belt control ECU output DTCs for the pre-collision system, be sure to check the Pre-Collision and Pre-Collision 2 DTCs.
  2. CLEAR DTC Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision / Trouble Codes. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision 2 / Trouble Codes. Clear the DTCs. HINT: As the driving support ECU assembly and seat belt control ECU output DTCs for the pre-collision system, be sure to clear the Pre-Collision and Pre-Collision 2 DTCs.

DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST

  1. DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: for Pre-Collision: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision / Data List. for Pre-Collision 2: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision 2 / Data List. Read the Data List according to the display on the Techstream. HINT: As the driving support ECU and seat belt control ECU both have Data List for the pre-collision system, be sure to check the Pre-Collision and Pre-Collision 2 Data Lists.   2. ACTIVE TEST HINT: Using the Techstream to perform Active Tests allows relays, VSVs, actuators and other items to be operated without removing any parts. This non-intrusive functional inspection can be very useful because intermittent operation may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Performing Active Tests early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. Data List information can be displayed while performing Active Tests. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Pre-Collision / Active Test.
