  1. Converter Heating

The MG ECU detects the temperature of the boost converter using the temperature sensor built into the boost converter. The boost converter using the temperature sensor outputs voltage which changes between 0.5 and 4.5 V in response to a change in temperature. The higher the boost converter temperature, the lower the output voltage. Conversely, the lower the boost converter temperature, the higher the output voltage. The MG ECU limit load based on signals sent from the boost converter temperature sensor to help prevent overheating. The MG ECU also detects malfunctions in the boost converter temperature sensor and its wiring.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The power management control ECU monitors revolution of the inverter water pump assembly. If there is an abnormality in revolution, the power management control ECU will illuminate the MIL and set a DTC.

HINT

When the ignition switch is turned off from ON (READY), the MG ECU applies current to motor (MG2) in a way that does not generate torque, in order to discharge the residual voltage in the inverter. When the hybrid system is normal, the VH value is almost 0 V after discharge. This DTC will be stored if the VH value is more than the specified value after discharge.

The accelerator pedal position sensor is mounted on the accelerator pedal to detect how much the pedal is depressed. This is a non-contact sensor with hall elements. There are 2 outputs from the sensor. One is used to detect the accelerator pedal position and the other is used as a confirmation to allow the detection of a malfunction in the sensor itself. Voltage is output from the accelerator pedal position sensor to terminals VPA1 and VPA2 of the power management control ECU. This voltage varies from 0 to 5 V in accordance with the accelerator pedal position. Terminal VPA2 is primarily used to detect a malfunction in the sensor itself. The power management control ECU determines the current accelerator pedal position and controls the hybrid control system based on signals received by terminals VPA1 and VPA2.

The hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly consists of the power split planetary gear unit, generator, motor, and the motor speed reduction planetary gear unit. The power split planetary gear unit uses a planetary gear to split engine output in accordance with driving requests while the vehicle is driven or the HV battery is charged. motor assists engine output while increasing vehicle drive force. motor also converts the energy, which would otherwise be consumed in the form of heat during normal braking, into electrical energy. This recovered energy is put back into the HV battery to perform regenerative braking. The MG ECU, which is built into in the inverter with converter assembly, controls motor (MG2) based on commands from the power management control ECU.

The motor generator control ECU (MG ECU) monitors communication data and detects malfunctions. A communication error between the MG ECU and power management control ECU is detected.

If ISC learning has not been performed, noise may occur in the hybrid vehicle transaxle assembly.

If noise occurs, initialize the learned values and perform idle learning.

When the vehicle is being driven with the accelerator pedal depressed, depressing the brake pedal without releasing the accelerator pedal will activate the brake override system to restrict driving torque. The conditions for activating the brake override system as well as the items that are controlled are explained below.

Scheme 199

Scheme 199: DESCRIPTION

Activation Conditions

  1. Vehicle is being driven at or above a specified speed.
  2. The accelerator pedal is depressed beyond a specified level, and then the brake pedal is depressed.

Note. Brake override control may not be performed depending on the relationship between accelerator pedal angle and vehicle speed.

Items Controlled

  1. Driving torque is restricted.

HINT

During brake override system control, the value for the accelerator pedal angle (which is used for hybrid control) is forcibly reduced to a specified value. For this reason, the Data List value for Accelerator Degree (the value used for driving torque control) will be replaced with a specified value regardless of the actual accelerator pedal angle (Accel Pedal Pos #1, Accel Pedal Pos #2).

Deactivation Conditions

Deactivation occurs when either of the following conditions is met

  1. The master cylinder pressure decreases below a specified value.
  2. The actual accelerator pedal angle increases or decreases beyond the specified range.

The EV drive mode signal is sent to the power management control ECU. This signal is then transmitted from the power management control ECU via CAN to the combination meter assembly to illuminate the EV mode indicator light.

Scheme 200: WIRING DIAGRAM

When selecting ECO drive mode, the ECO mode switch (eco switch assembly) operation signal is sent to the air conditioning amplifier assembly. Following this, ECO drive mode control is activated for the heater and air conditioning system.

Scheme 201: WIRING DIAGRAM

If the ignition switch is on (IG), the power management control ECU applies current to the MREL terminal to turn the IGCT relay on. This supplies power to the +B1 and +B2 terminals.
