- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not replace the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with the negative (-) auxiliary battery cable connected and the ignition switch on (IG). Do not rotate the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly without the steering wheel with the negative (-) auxiliary battery cable connected and the ignition switch on (IG). Ensure that the steering wheel is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor. Do not remove the steering sensor from the spiral cable. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly. Using pliers, expand the clamp. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Clamp *2 Claw While holding the clamp expanded, raise the claw using a screwdriver to disengage it, and then remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/o Smart Key System) Disengage the 2 claws and disconnect the transponder key amplifier.
- REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (w/ Smart Key System) Secure the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Using a drill, drill a hole in the steering lock set bolt, to insert a screw extractor. Using the screw extractor, remove the steering lock set bolt and remove the steering lock actuator assembly.
- REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Secure the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Using a drill, drill a hole in the steering lock set bolt, to insert a screw extractor. Using the screw extractor, remove the steering lock set bolt and remove the upper steering column with switch bracket assembly.
- REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Insert the key. Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly by releasing the 2 claws. HINT: Slide the un-lock warning switch assembly, in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration, to remove it.
- REMOVE KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the screw and key lock solenoid from the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ACC. Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the upper steering column bracket assembly, as shown in the illustration, and pull the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly out until its claw comes into contact with the stopper of the upper steering column bracket assembly. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Claw *2 Stopper Push Pull NOTE: Pull the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly out until the claw comes into contact with the stopper of the upper steering column bracket assembly. Otherwise, the following procedure cannot be conducted properly. Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the steering column bracket and tilt it downward, as shown in the illustration, to disengage the claw on the ignition switch lock cylinder. - REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Disengage the 2 claws and remove the ignition or starter switch assembly from the upper steering column bracket assembly. NOTE: Be sure to start operation while the ignition or starter switch assembly faces upward, and while the upper steering column bracket assembly faces downward. Check the press in condition of the arrow inner part. If the inner part has loose fit, replace the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- REMOVE POWER STEERING MOTOR ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not drop the power steering motor assembly, strike it with tools or subject it to impacts. If the power steering motor assembly is subjected to an impact, replace it with a new one. Do not pull the wire harness and tilt steering support bond cable of the power steering motor assembly. Do not allow any moisture to come into contact with the power steering motor assembly. Do not loosen any bolts not mentioned in the procedure. Do not allow any foreign objects to contaminate the power steering motor assembly. Cut the clamp, and remove the clamp and the 3 pieces of tape from the wire harness. NOTE: When removing the clamp and the tape, be careful not to damage the wire harness. Remove the 2 bolts and power steering motor assembly from the electric power steering column sub-assembly.

- INSPECT PRELOAD Secure the steering column assembly in a vice using aluminum plates and wooden block as shown in the illustration. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Aluminum Plate *2 Wooden Block NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it. Using SST and a torque wrench, turn the main shaft at a constant speed of approximately 1 revolution every 4 seconds and measure the preload. SST: 09616-00011 Preload Torque: 1.4 N*m (14 kgf*cm, 12 in.*lbf) or less If the preload is not as specified, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly or power steering motor sub-assembly with a new one.
- INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the key and check that the steering lock function is activated. Insert the key, turn the ignition switch to ACC and check that the steering lock function has been deactivated.
- INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Check that the 2 bushings are securely installed to the steering column assembly. If the bushings are deformed, missing or damaged, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one. Check that the 2 capsules are securely installed to the electric power steering column sub-assembly as shown in the illustration. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Capsule *a OK *b NG Standard Capsules do not overlap the corner parts of the brackets. NOTE: If the standard value is not satisfied, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one. If the capsules have deformation, damage or misalignment, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one.

- INSTALL POWER STEERING MOTOR ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not drop the power steering motor assembly, strike it with tools or subject it to impacts. If the power steering motor assembly is subjected to an impact, replace it with a new one. Do not pull the wire harness and tilt steering support bond cable of the power steering motor assembly. Do not allow any moisture to come into contact with the power steering motor assembly. Do not loosen any bolts not mentioned in the procedure. Do not allow any foreign objects to contaminate the power steering motor assembly. Apply grease to the serrated part of the electric power steering column sub-assembly. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION Grease NOTE: First wipe off the existing grease from the serrated part, and then apply the dedicated grease supplied with a new power steering motor assembly or electric power steering column sub-assembly. Temporarily install the power steering motor assembly to the electric power steering column sub-assembly with the 2 bolts. NOTE: When temporarily installing the 2 bolts to the power steering motor assembly, do not tighten them all the way down. Secure the steering column assembly in a vise using aluminum plates. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Aluminum Plate *2 Wooden Block NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise, as the steering column assembly may become deformed. Secure the power steering motor assembly so that it is directly upright. Support the steering column assembly with a wooden block or similar item to ensure that it does not fall. Using SST, turn the steering main shaft once 180 degrees to the left and then 180 degrees to the right at a speed of 60 rpm, and repeat 2 to 3 times to adjust the axis centering of the power steering motor assembly. SST: 09616-00011 Tighten the 2 bolts. Torque: 19 N*m (189 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) Using SST, measure the turning torque of the steering main shaft. SST: 09616-00011 Turning torque Torque: 1.4 N*m (14 kgf*cm, 12 in.*lbf) or less NOTE: Ensure that there is no abnormal resistance during rotation. If the torque is not as specified, readjust the axis centering of the power steering motor assembly. Install a new clamp and tape to the wire harness as shown in the illustration. - INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Engage the 2 claws to install the ignition or starter switch assembly onto the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- INSTALL KEY INTER LOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) Install the key inter lock solenoid onto the upper steering column bracket assembly with the screw.
- INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Engage the 2 claws to install the un-lock warning switch assembly onto the upper steering column bracket assembly. HINT: Slide the un-lock warning switch assembly, in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration, to install it.
- INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ACC. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly into the upper steering column bracket assembly. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is securely fixed onto the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly.
- INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN WITH SWITCH BRACKET ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Set the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Install the upper steering column with switch bracket assembly with a new steering lock set bolt, and then tighten the bolt until its head comes off.
- INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (w/ Smart Key System) HINT: When replacing the steering lock actuator assembly, perform initialization. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(/toyota/prius-c/i-2011-2015/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#engine-immobiliser-with-smart-key-system-diagnostics-introduction) . Set the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Install the steering lock actuator assembly with a new steering lock set bolt, and then tighten the bolt until its head comes off.
- INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/o Smart Key System) Engage the 2 claws to install the transponder key amplifier.

- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Install the steering column assembly with a new bolt and 2 nuts. Bolt Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) Nut Torque: 25 N*m (255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Be sure there is no interference around the wire harness. There are two different bolt sizes (12 mm (0.472 in.) or 14 mm (0.551 in.)) available. Engage the wire harness clamp. Connect the 2 connectors to the power steering ECU assembly. Connect the connectors and engage the wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly.

- CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the steering gear assembly. When the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly is replaced with a new one, it has no matchmarks, so install it while the head of the bolt B faces the back of the vehicle. Install bolt B. - INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH LH Connect the connector to install the steering pad switch LH to the steering pad switch RH. Align a new clamp with the groove and install it as shown in the illustration. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Clamp *a 70 to 85 mm (2.76 to 3.35 in.) *b 10 mm (0.394 in.) or less *c 1 to 3 mm (0.0394 to 0.118 in.) Front of the Vehicle NOTE: Make sure to install the clamp in the correct direction. After installation, cut off the excess length of the clamp within the specified range *c shown in the illustration.
- INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY Engage the 2 claws to install the steering pad switch assembly (RH side) to the steering wheel sub-assembly. Install the 2 screws. Torque: 2.4 N*m (25 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf) Engage the 2 claws to install the steering pad switch assembly (LH side) to the steering wheel sub-assembly. Install the 2 screws. Torque: 2.4 N*m (25 kgf*cm, 21 in.*lbf) Connect the steering pad switch connector to the spiral cable.
