  1. CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL Warm up the engine, then stop the engine and wait for 5 minutes. Check that the engine oil level is between the low level and full level marks on the level gage. If low, check for leakage and add oil up to the full level mark. NOTE: Do not fill with engine oil above the full level mark.
  2. CHECK ENGINE OIL QUALITY Check the oil for deterioration, entry of water, discoloring or thinning. If the quality is visibly poor, replace the oil. Oil grade: Use API grade SL "Energy-Conserving", or ILSAC multigrade engine oil. SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy, and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 5W-30 is not available, SAE 10W-30 may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil replacement.
  3. INSPECT OIL PRESSURE Disconnect the oil pressure switch connector. Using a deep socket wrench 24 mm, remove the oil pressure switch. Install the oil pressure gauge. Warm up the engine. Inspect the oil pressure. OIL PRESSURE SPECIFICATION At idle 29 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4.3 psi) or more At 3,000 RPM 294 to 539 kPa (3.0 to 5.5 kgf/cm2, 43 to 78 psi) Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the oil pressure switch. Adhesive: Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent Using a deep socket wrench 24 mm, install the oil pressure switch. Torque: 15 N.m (153 kgf.cm, 11 ft.lbf) NOTE: Do not start the engine within 1 hour of Installation. Connect the oil pressure switch connector. Check for the engine oil leaks.

  1. REMOVE OIL PUMP DRIVE AND DRIVEN ROTORS Remove the 3 screws, then remove the oil pump cover. Remove the oil pump drive and driven rotors from the oil pump.
  2. REMOVE OIL PUMP RELIEF VALVE Remove the oil pump relief valve plug, then remove the oil pump relief valve spring and oil pump relief valve from the oil pump.
  3. INSPECT OIL JET Apply air pressure to the path shown in the illustration, then check the oil jet for damage or clogging. If the air does not blow out from the oil jet, replace the oil pump.
  4. INSPECT OIL PUMP RELIEF VALVE Coat the oil pump relief valve with engine oil, then check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If this does not occur, replace the oil pump.
  5. CHECK ROTOR TIP CLEARANCE Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips. Standard tip clearance: 0.040 to 0.160 mm (0.0016 to 0.0063 in.) Maximum tip clearance: 0.160 mm (0.0063 in.) If the tip clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.
  6. CHECK ROTOR SIDE CLEARANCE Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the 2 rotors and precision straight edge. Standard side clearance: 0.025 to 0.071 mm (0.0010 to 0.0028 in.) Maximum side clearance: 0.071 mm (0.0028 in.) If the side clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.
  7. CHECK ROTOR BODY CLEARANCE Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and oil pump body. Standard body clearance: 0.260 to 0.325 mm (0.0102 to 0.0128 in.) Maximum body clearance: 0.325 mm (0.0128 in.) If the body clearance is greater than maximum, replace the oil pump.
  8. INSTALL OIL PUMP RELIEF VALVE Coat the oil pump relief valve with engine oil, then insert the oil pump relief valve and oil pump relief spring into the valve hole. Install the oil pump relief valve plug. Torque: 37 N.m (377 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)
  9. INSTALL OIL PUMP DRIVE AND DRIVEN ROTORS Coat the oil pump drive and driven rotors with engine oil, and place them into the oil pump with marks facing the oil pump cover side. Install the oil pump cover with the 3 screws. Torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf)
