Scheme 3
- Check valve clearance with engine cold. Remove valve cover and gasket. Rotate crankshaft pulley in direction of engine rotation so crankshaft pulley groove aligns with "0" mark on timing chain cover and cylinder No. 1 (front cylinder) is at TDC on compression stroke.
- Ensure 1-dot and 2-dot timing marks on camshaft sprockets are aligned. (Scheme 1) If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft pulley in direction of engine rotation one full revolution (360 degrees).
- Ensure valves on cylinder No. 1 are loose. Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance of intake valves on cylinders No. 1, 2 and 4 and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 1, 3 and 5. (Scheme 2)
- Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees) and realign align crankshaft pulley groove with "0" mark on timing chain cover. Using feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance of intake valves on cylinders No. 3, 5 and 6 and exhaust valves on cylinders No. 2, 4 and 6. (Scheme 2)
- Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See the «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table. VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS Application (1) In. (mm) Exhaust.010-.014 (.25-.35) Intake.006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
- If valve clearance adjustment is required on any valve except rear valves on cylinder No. 6, rotate crankshaft pulley so camshaft lobe is facing upward on valve to be adjusted. Rotate valve lifter so notch on valve lifter is toward spark plug.
- Valve Clearance Adjuster (SST 09248-55050) is used for adjusting valve clearance. Press valve lifter downward using SST "A" of valve clearance adjuster. (Scheme 3) Install SST "B" between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST "A".
- Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Using micrometer, measure thickness of removed adjusting shim. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. (Scheme 4)-9.
- Install proper adjusting shim. Using SST "A", press downward on valve lifter and remove SST "B". Recheck valve clearance.
- If valve clearance adjustment is required on rear valves on cylinder No. 6, manufacturer states to remove camshafts for access to adjusting shim. See the ENGINES article in ENGINE MECHANICAL section.
- Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Using micrometer, measure thickness of adjusting shim removed. Using measured clearance and adjusting shim thickness, determine correct thickness of adjusting shim to be used. (Scheme 4)-9. Install adjusting shim and camshaft. Recheck valve clearance.
- Once all valves are properly adjusted, install valve cover using NEW gasket. Check and adjust ignition timing if distributor was removed. See «IGNITION TIMING»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments__ignition-timing).

IGNITION TIMING
| CAUTION | Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to ignition system. To avoid possible damage to ignitor and/or coil, DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to become grounded. |
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shut engine off. Connect timing light to spark plug wire on cylinder No. 1.
- Remove fuse box cover and connect scan tester to data link connector No. 3. (Scheme 10) Scan tester is used to read engine RPM.
- Apply parking brake. Place transmission Neutral. Start engine and maintain engine at 2500 RPM for 90 seconds and then allow engine to idle. Ensure idle speed is 600-700 RPM.
- Install Jumper Wire (SST 09843-18020) between terminals TE1 and E1 of data link connector No. 1. (Scheme 11) NOTE: Timing marks are located on front cover.
- Ensure base timing is within specification at idle with transmission in Neutral, A/C and all accessories off. See the «6-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table.
- If ignition timing is incorrect, loosen distributor hold-down bolt. Adjust ignition timing by rotating distributor. Tighten distributor hold-down bolt.
- Remove jumper wire from data link connector No. 1. Ensure advance timing is within specification. See «6-CYLINDER IGNITION TIMING»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table. Remove timing light and scan tester.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
Note. Mixture adjustment is not possible.
| CAUTION | Some tachometers may not be compatible with ignition system. Consult tachometer manufacturer before connecting tachometer to system. To avoid possible damage to ignitor and/or coil, DO NOT allow tachometer terminal to become grounded. |
Note. Check and adjust idle speed with air cleaner installed, all air intake system hoses and vacuum lines connected, electronic fuel injection system wiring connectors tight, transmission/transaxle in Neutral, ignition timing properly set, electric cooling fan off (if equipped), A/C and all accessories off and engine at normal operating temperature.
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Shut engine off.
- Remove fuse box cover and connect scan tester to data link connector No. 3. (Scheme 10) Scan tester is used to read engine RPM.
- Apply parking brake. Place transmission in Neutral. Start engine and maintain engine at 2500 RPM for 90 seconds and then allow engine to idle. Ensure idle speed is within specification. See the «6-CYLINDER IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table.
- If idle speed is not within specification, check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve, wiring and Electronic Control Module (ECM). See IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in the «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-systemcomponent-tests) article. Remove scan tester.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR
- Disconnect electrical connector from Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Loosen TPS mounting screws. Connect ohmmeter between terminals IDL and E2. (Scheme 12)
- Apply vacuum to throttle opener. To set initial clearance, insert proper thickness feeler gauge between throttle stop screw and throttle lever. See «6-CYLINDER THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR ADJUSTMENT»(/toyota/land-cruiser/70-1984-2007/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments) table.
