HINT

  1. Use the following procedures to troubleshoot the smart key system.
  2. The Techstream can be used in steps 4, 5, 6 and 8.
  3. When troubleshooting the smart key system using the Techstream with the power switch off, connect the Techstream to the vehicle and repeat turning any of the courtesy light switches on and off until communication between the tester and the vehicle begins (the interval between ON and OFF should be less than 1.5 sec).

  2. CUSTOMER PROBLEM ANALYSIS CHECK HINT: In troubleshooting, confirm that the problem symptoms have been accurately identified. Preconceptions should be discarded in order to make an accurate judgment. To clearly understand what the problem symptoms are, it is extremely important to ask the customer about the problem and the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred. Gather as much information as possible for reference. Past problems that seem unrelated may also help in some cases.   3. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the battery voltage. Standard voltage: 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding to the next step.
  4. INSPECT CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Use the Techstream to check if the CAN communication system is functioning normally.   1. SMART KEY SYSTEM OPERATION INSPECTION HINT: Refer to «PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE»(ref-305569-S10408401422008112800000) if the results of the following checks are not normal (See «PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE»(ref-305569-S10408401422008112800000) ). Check the entry unlock function. Use the wireless lock operation to lock the doors. With the electrical key in your possession, touch a door's outside handle (touch sensor) and check that the door unlocks. Check the entry unlock operation's detection area. Step 1: Hold the electrical key at the same height as the door's outside handle (approximately 0.8 m (2.62 ft.)). Make sure that the direction and position of the electrical key are as shown in the illustration. Step 2: When the electrical key is brought within 0.7 to 1.0 m (2.30 to 3.28 ft.) of the vehicle, check that the system enters unlock standby mode. HINT: Unlock standby mode is signified by the electrical key's red LED illuminating. Step 3: After the system enters unlock standby mode, touch the door outside handle's sensor within 3 seconds. Check that the door unlocks. NOTE: The electrical key cannot communicate with the system within a 0.2 m (0.656 ft.) radius of each door outside handle. Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the remaining doors. Step 5: Inspect the door electrical key oscillator's response sensitivity. Wear protective gloves, set the system to unlock standby mode, and check that touching the inner side of the door outside handle (the highlighted area in the illustration) with your fingers causes the door to unlock. NOTE: When touching the highlighted area, tapping too quickly or having extended contact may not trigger the sensor. In such a case, the door will not unlock. Step 6: Repeat step 5 for the remaining doors. Check the entry lock function. Step 1: Close all of the vehicle's doors. With the electrical key in your possession outside the vehicle, check that pressing the lock switch locks the doors. Step 2: Inspect the entry lock operation's detection area and the indoor electrical key antenna for wave leaks. Hold the electrical key at a height of 1 m (3.28 ft.) above the lower edge of the window frame. Make sure that the direction and position of the electrical key are as shown in the illustration. When the electrical key is approximately 0.3 m (0.984 ft.) from the vehicle and the lock switch is pressed, check that all the doors lock and the warning buzzer (for when the electrical key is forgotten) does not sound. If the warning buzzer sounds, the indoor electrical key antenna may have a wave leak. HINT: Do not press the lock switch with the same hand that is holding the electrical key because the electrical key cannot communicate with the system within a 0.2 m (0.656 ft.) radius of the door outside handle. The doors will not lock. Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the remaining doors. Check the entry back door open function. Close the back door. With the electrical key in your possession, check that pressing the back door opener switch opens the back door. Inspect the entry back door open operation's detection area. Hold the electrical key at the same height as the back door opener switch (approximately 0.8 m (2.62 ft.)) and align the key with the center of the rear of the vehicle. Make sure that the direction and position of the electrical key are as shown in the illustration. When the electrical key is brought within 0.7 to 1.0 m (2.30 to 3.28 ft.) of the vehicle, check that pressing the back door opener switch opens the back door. Check the entry glass hatch open function. Close the back door. With the electrical key in your possession, check that pressing the glass hatch opener switch opens the glass hatch. Inspect the entry glass hatch open operation's detection area. Hold the electrical key at the same height as the glass hatch opener switch (approximately 0.8 m (2.62 ft.)) and align the key with the center of the rear of the vehicle. Make sure that the direction and position of the electrical key are as shown in the illustration. When the electrical key is brought within 0.7 to 1.0 m (2.30 to 3.28 ft.) of the vehicle, check that pressing the glass hatch opener switch opens the glass hatch. Check the entry ignition function. When the engine is off: With the electrical key in your possession and the brake pedal depressed, check that pressing the power switch releases the steering wheel lock and starts the engine. HINT: The engine can be started only when the power switch indicator illuminates in green. When the engine is running: With the electrical key in your possession, check that pressing the power switch stops the engine. Inspect the entry ignition operation's detection area (front). Make sure that the direction of the electrical key is as shown in the illustration. When the electrical key is in either of the 2 inspection points in the illustration, check that the engine can start. NOTE: The engine cannot be started when the electrical key is on the instrument panel or in the glove box. Inspect the entry ignition operation's detection area (center). Make sure that the direction of the electrical key is as shown in the illustration. When the electrical key is in either of the 2 inspection points in the illustration, check that the engine can start. Place the electrical key lock-in prevention function (Cabin). Place the electrical key in the cabin with all doors locked. Check that: 1) closing all doors triggers the electrical key's wireless buzzer (which lasts approximately 2 seconds), and 2) unlocking the doors opens the doors. Check the electrical key cancel function. Proceed to the electrical key cancel operation (See «SMART KEY SYSTEM»(ref-305569-S12826329952008112800000) ). The electrical key cancel operation disables the following functions: Entry Unlock/Lock Entry Back Door Open Entry Glass Hatch Open Electrical Key Lock-in Prevention Warning While the electrical key cancel function is ON, check that all functions in the smart key system cannot be operated. Check the answer-back function (hazard warning light flashing and buzzer sounding). Carry the electrical key in the vehicle and close the driver side door. Then turn the power switch off or on (ACC). The steering lock is released. Open the driver side door and check that the buzzer sounds intermittently. Check that the electrical key reminder warning buzzer stops. When the buzzer is sounding, check that the buzzer stops sounding if either of the following is performed: Close the driver side door (front door courtesy light switch is off). Turn the power switch on (IG or ACC) and lock the steering wheel.
  2. KEY DIAGNOSTIC MODE HINT: Key diagnostic mode checks if the electrical key transmitter within a selected oscillator/amplifier detection area is operating normally. The results are output through the wireless door lock buzzer (in right front fender). Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Smart Key / Utility / Communication Check (Key Diag Mode). Check the values by referring to the table below.   1. CUSTOMIZING FUNCTION WITH TECHSTREAM HINT: The items in the table below can be customized. NOTE: When the customer requests a change in a function, first make sure that the function can be customized. Be sure to make a note of the current setting before customizing. When troubleshooting a function, first make sure that the function is set to the default setting. HINT: The following functions default settings are ON. Part of these functions can be customized. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Customize Setting. / Smart Key. Select the setting by referring to the table below.   2. ENTRY UNLOCK MODE SWITCHING FUNCTION HINT: The function only changes the entry unlock mode of the smart key system. This function is not for the wireless door lock control. To change the vehicle to entry unlock mode switching function: Driver door unlock mode: When the driver door's touch sensor is touched, only the driver door unlocks. When another touch sensor is touched, all doors unlock. All door unlock mode: When any touch sensor is touched, all doors unlock. When the power switch is off, press the LOCK button and one of the other buttons on the key at the same time for approximately 5 seconds while the key is in the actuation area. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) receives this signal from the door control receiver and switches the entry unlock mode. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) sounds the wireless door lock buzzer and the buzzer in the combination meter to inform the user that the mode has been switched. If the entry unlock mode needs to be switched again, press the LOCK button and one of the other three buttons on the key at the same time for approximately 5 seconds after the LED of the key goes off. NOTE: After pressing and holding the switches for 4.5 seconds, wait 5 seconds before performing the same procedure again. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) receives this signal from the door control receiver and changes the smart key system to the entry unlock mode. The certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) sounds the wireless door lock buzzer and the buzzer of the combination meter to inform the user that the mode has been switched.
  3. ELECTRICAL KEY CANCEL The electrical key cancel operation disables the following functions: Entry Unlock/Lock Entry Back Door Open Entry Glass Hatch Open Electrical Key Lock-in Prevention Warning The operation procedures are as follows: Precondition: Power switch off, driver side door closed and unlocked. Unlock the driver side door once with the UNLOCK switch of the electrical key. Open the driver door within 5 seconds. Unlock the driver side door twice with the UNLOCK switch of the electrical key within 5 seconds. Repeat open and close the driver door twice within 30 seconds, and open again. (Open --> Close --> Open --> Close --> Open) Unlock the driver side door twice with the UNLOCK switch of the electrical key within 5 seconds. Open and close the driver door within 30 seconds, and open again. (Open --> Close --> Open) Close the driver door within 5 seconds. When electrical key cancel is activated, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds twice. To return to the original condition, perform the procedures again. When the original condition is returned, the wireless door lock buzzer sounds once.

  2. MAIN BODY ECU (INSTRUMENT PANEL JUNCTION BLOCK) Disconnect the 1M and 1F junction block connectors. Disconnect the D9 main body ECU (instrument panel junction block) connector. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.   1. CHECK DLC3 Check the DLC3 (See «HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT ECU CONTROLLED SYSTEMS»(ref-305531-S36336940052008112800000) ).
  2. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Measure the battery voltage. Standard voltage: 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding to the next step.
  1. READ DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. When the Techstream cannot be turned on due to a malfunction or other problem, refer to PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING the Techstream (See «SMART KEY SYSTEM»(ref-305569-S12826329952008112800000) ).
