REMOVAL
Note. Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, caulking a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.
Scheme 32
- Drain engine coolant.
- Remove water inlet and thermostat. Disconnect the wire harness clamp from the water inlet. Remove the 2 nuts, and disconnect the water inlet from the cylinder block. Remove the thermostat. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
Scheme 33
Note. The thermostat is numbered with the valve opening temperature.
Scheme 34
Scheme 35
- Immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the water.
- Check the valve opening temperature. Valve opening temperature: 80-84°C(176-183°F) If the valve opening temperature is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
- Check the valve lift. Valve lift: 8.5 mm (0.345 in.) or more at 93°C (199°F) If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
- Check that the valve is fully closed when the thermostat is at low temperatures (below 40°C (104°F)).
If not closed, replace the thermostat.
Scheme 36
- Place thermostat in cylinder block. Install a new gasket to the thermostat. Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve upward. NOTE: The jiggle valve may be set within 10° at either side of the prescribed position.
- Install water inlet. Install the water inlet with the 2 nuts. Install the wire harness to the water inlet. Torque: 9.0 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf)
- Fill with engine coolant.
- Start engine, and check for coolant leaks.
INSTALLATION
- Install electric cooling fan to radiator. Install the cooling fan with the 3 bolts. Torque: 7.5 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 66 in..lbf)
- Install radiator assembly Install the 2 radiator support cushions and grommets to the radiator. Attach the 2 grommets on the radiator to the body brackets. Install the upper radiator supports with the 7 (w/o A/C) or 9 (w/ A/C) bolts. Connect the upper radiator hose. Connect the lower radiator hose. Connect the radiator reservoir hose. A/T: Connect the 2 oil cooler hoses to the oil cooler pipes. Install the radiator cover with the 2 clips. Connect the horn connector. Connect the electric cooling fan connector.
- Install engine under covers.
- Fill with engine coolant.
- Start engine and check for coolant leaks.
