Ensure that the steering wheel assembly is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor. Disconnect each connector from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly. Using pliers, expand the clamp. *a Clamp *b Claw While holding the clamp expanded, raise the claw using a screwdriver to disengage it, and then remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
- REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET Turn back the floor carpet. Remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.
- SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft assembly. *a Matchmark Remove the bolt. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft assembly.

Do not rotate the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly without the steering wheel assembly with the battery connected and the ignition switch ON. Ensure that the steering wheel assembly is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor. Disconnect each connector from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly. Using pliers, expand the clamp. *a Clamp *b Claw While holding the clamp expanded, raise the claw using a screwdriver to disengage it, and then remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
- REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET Turn back the floor carpet. Remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.

- REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN BRACKET WITH SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Secure the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Using a drill, drill a hole in the steering lock set bolt and insert a screw extractor. Using the screw extractor, remove the steering lock set bolt and upper steering column bracket with switch assembly.
- REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (w/ Smart Key System) HINT: Perform the same procedure as for the upper steering column bracket with switch assembly.
- REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (w/o Smart Key System) Disengage the 2 claws and remove the transponder key coil.
- REMOVE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the 2 screws and ignition or starter switch assembly from the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- REMOVE KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) for Automatic Transaxle and CVT: Remove the screw. Disengage the claw to remove the key interlock solenoid from the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- REMOVE IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ACC. Push Pull Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the upper steering column bracket assembly, as shown in the illustration, and pull the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly. Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the hole in the upper steering column bracket assembly and tilt it upward, as shown in the illustration, to disengage the claw on the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly. Then pull out the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly. *a Claw Tilt Pull out
- REMOVE UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Remove the un-lock warning switch assembly by pushing up the center part and releasing the 2 claws. *a Center Part HINT: Slide the un-lock warning switch in the direction shown by the arrow in the illustration to remove it.
- REMOVE POWER STEERING MOTOR ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not drop the power steering motor assembly, strike it with tools or subject it to impacts. If the power steering motor assembly is subjected to an impact, replace it with a new one. Do not pull the wire harness of the power steering motor assembly. Do not allow any moisture to come into contact with the power steering motor assembly. Do not loosen any bolts not mentioned in the procedure. Do not allow any foreign matter to contaminate the power steering motor assembly. Cut the clamp. Remove the tape. Remove the 2 bolts and power steering motor assembly from the electric power steering column sub-assembly.

- INSPECT PRELOAD Secure the steering column assembly in a vise using aluminum plates, cloths and wooden blocks. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. *a Cloth *b Wooden Block Using SST and a torque wrench, turn the steering main shaft at a constant rate of approximately 1 revolution every 4 seconds and measure the preload. SST: 09616-00011 Preload 0.8 to 1.4 N*m (8 to 14 kgf*cm, 7 to 12 in.*lbf) If the preload is not as specified, replace the power steering motor assembly or electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one.
- INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Check that the 2 bushings are securely installed to the steering column assembly. If the bushings are deformed, missing or damaged, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one. Check that the 2 capsules are securely installed to the electric power steering column sub-assembly as shown in the illustration. *1 Capsule *a OK *b NG If the capsules are deformed, damaged or misaligned, replace the electric power steering column sub-assembly with a new one.
- INSPECT STEERING LOCK OPERATION (w/o Smart Key System) Check that the steering lock mechanism is activated when the key is removed. Check that the steering lock mechanism is deactivated when the key is inserted and turned to the ACC position. If there are any abnormalities, replace the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly or upper steering column bracket assembly.

- INSTALL POWER STEERING MOTOR ASSEMBLY NOTE: Do not drop the power steering motor assembly, strike it with tools or subject it to impacts. If the power steering motor assembly is subjected to an impact, replace it with a new one. Do not pull the wire harness of the power steering motor assembly. Do not allow any moisture to come into contact with the power steering motor assembly. Do not loosen any bolts not mentioned in the procedure. Do not allow any foreign matter to contaminate the power steering motor assembly. Apply grease to the serrated part of the electric power steering column sub-assembly. Grease NOTE: First wipe off the existing grease from the serrated part, and then apply the dedicated grease supplied with a new power steering motor assembly or electric power steering column sub-assembly. Temporarily install the power steering motor assembly to the electric power steering column sub-assembly with the 2 bolts. NOTE: When temporarily installing the 2 bolts to the power steering motor assembly, do not tighten them all the way down. *a Cloth *b Wooden Block Secure the steering column assembly in a vise using aluminum plates, cloths and wooden blocks. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise, as the steering column assembly may become deformed. Secure the power steering motor assembly so that it is upright. Support the steering column assembly with wooden blocks or similar items to ensure that it does not fall. Using SST, turn the steering main shaft once 180 degrees to the left and then 180 degrees to the right at a speed of 60 RPM, and repeat 2 to 3 times to adjust the axis centering of the power steering motor assembly. SST: 09616-00011 Tighten the 2 bolts. Torque: 18.5 N*m (189 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) Using SST and a torque wrench, measure the turning torque of the steering main shaft. SST: 09616-00011 Preload 0.8 to 1.4 N*m (8 to 14 kgf*cm, 7 to 12 in.*lbf) NOTE: Ensure that there is no abnormal resistance during rotation. If the turning torque is not as specified, readjust the axis centering of the power steering motor assembly. Apply new tape and install a new clamp to the wire harness as shown in the illustration. *a Power Steering Motor Wire Harness *b Torque Sensor Wire Harness *c Tape *d Clamp *e 225 to 245 mm (8.86 to 9.64 in.) *f 240 to 260 mm (9.45 to 10.2 in.) *g 170 to 190 mm (6.70 to 7.48 in.) *h 50 to 70 mm (1.97 to 2.75 in.) *i 70° or less - - NOTE: Wrap the tape at least 2 turns. Secure the wire harness to the power steering motor assembly within the range indicated by *i. Cut off the excess length of the clamp.
- INSTALL UN-LOCK WARNING SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Engage the 2 claws to install the un-lock warning switch assembly to the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- INSTALL IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Turn the ignition switch to ACC. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly to the upper steering column bracket assembly. Make sure that the ignition switch lock cylinder assembly is securely installed into the upper steering column bracket assembly.
- INSTALL KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID (w/o Smart Key System) for Automatic Transaxle and CVT: Engage the claw to install the key interlock solenoid to the steering column upper bracket assembly. Install the screw.
- INSTALL IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Install the ignition or starter switch assembly to the upper steering column bracket assembly with the 2 screws.
- INSTALL TRANSPONDER KEY COIL (w/o Smart Key System) Engage the 2 claws to install the transponder key coil.
- INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN BRACKET WITH SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/o Smart Key System) Secure the steering column assembly in a vise between aluminum plates. NOTE: Do not overtighten the vise. Temporarily install the upper steering column bracket with switch assembly with a new steering lock set bolt. Tighten the steering lock set bolt until the bolt head breaks off.
- INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (w/ Smart Key System) HINT: Perform the same procedure as for the upper steering column bracket with switch assembly. Bolt Torque: 36 N*m (367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) Nut Torque: 25 N*m (255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Make sure that the wire harness is not interfering with the steering column assembly. Connect each connector and engage each wire harness clamp to the steering column assembly. Engage the clamp. Connect the 2 connectors.
- INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering column assembly. *a Matchmark Install the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly to the steering column assembly. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly. *a Turn *b Hold SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05070 NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use.

- REMOVE SHIFT PADDLE SWITCH (TRANSMISSION SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY) (w/ Shift Paddle Switch) Remove the 2 screws from the steering wheel assembly. *a Guide Disengage the guide from the steering wheel assembly. Disengage the 5 guides to remove the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) with No. 1 switch wire from the steering wheel assembly.
Note. w/ VSC: Do not replace the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with the battery connected and the ignition switch ON. Engage the guide to the steering wheel assembly. Install the 2 shift paddle switches (transmission shift switch assemblies) to the steering wheel assembly with the 2 screws. Torque: 0.8 N*m (8 kgf*cm, 7 in.*lbf)

Connect the steering pad switch connector to the spiral cable sub-assembly.
