Removal

Note. The rear axle shaft must be removed before doing this procedure. See REAR AXLE SHAFT .

1. Remove bearing inner retainer. Using a grinder, grind down the inner retainer. Using a hammer and chisel, cut off the retainer and remove it from the shaft. (Scheme 9)
2. Remove the bearing and outer retainer from the shaft. Using SST 09527-21011, press off the shaft from the bearing. (Scheme 10) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).

1. Install bearing outer retainer and new bearing on axle shaft. Using SST 09515-21010, press on the bearing outer retainer and a new bearing. (Scheme 11) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).
2. Install bearing inner retainer on axle shaft. Heat the bearing inner retainer to about 150°C (302°F) in an oil bath. (Scheme 12) Using SST 09515-21010, press the inner retainer onto the axle shaft while the inner retainer is still hot. 1. Remove axle seal from axle housing. (Scheme 14) Using SST 09308-00010, remove the oil seal. See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).

Inspect oil seal, if the seal is damaged or worn, replace it.

1. Install new oil seal in axle housing to a depth of 5.6 mm (0.220 in.). (Scheme 15) Apply MP grease to the oil seal. Using SST 09517-12010, drive in the oil seal. See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).

1. Put matchmarks on flanges. Remove the 4 bolts and nuts. Remove drive shaft from differential. (Scheme 16)
2. Remove companion flange. Using a hammer and chisel, loosen the staked part of the nut. Using SST 09330-00021 to hold the flange, remove the nut. (Scheme 17) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Using SST 09557-22022 (09557-22030), remove the companion flange. (Scheme 18) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).
3. Remove oil seal and oil slinger. (Scheme 19) Using SST 09308-10010, remove the oil seal from the housing. See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Remove the oil slinger.
4. Remove front bearing and bearing spacer. Using SST 09556-22010, remove the front bearing from the pinion. Remove the bearing spacer. (Scheme 20) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).

1. Install new bearing spacer and front bearing on the pinion shaft. (Scheme 21)
2. Install new oil slinger and new oil seal. Install the oil slinger facing as shown. (Scheme 22) Using SST 09554-22010, drive in a new oil seal to a depth of 4.0 mm (0.157 in.). (Scheme 22) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.
3. Using SST 09557-22022 (09557-22030), install the companion flange. (Scheme 23) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Coat the threads of a new nut with MP grease. Using SST 09330-00021 to hold the flange, tighten the nut. (Scheme 24) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Torque to specifications. 4. Adjust front bearing preload. Using a torque meter, measure the preload of the backlash between the pinion and ring gear. (Scheme 25) If preload is greater than specifications, replace the bearing. See «BEARING PRELOAD SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials) table under AXLE ASSEMBLY SPECIFICATIONS. If preload is less than specifications, retighten the nut 9 ft. lbs (13 N.m) at a time until the specified preload is reached. If the maximum torque of 174 ft. lbs (235 N.m) is exceeded while retightening the nut, replace the bearing spacer and repeat the preload procedure. Do not back off pinion nut to reduce preload.
5. Stake pinion nut. (Scheme 26)
6. Connect drive shaft flange to companion flange. Align the matchmarks on the flanges and connect the flanges with 4 bolts and nuts. (Scheme 16) Torque the 4 bolts and nuts to specifications. 7. Install drain plug and check differential oil level, install filler plug. (Scheme 27) See «LUBRICATION»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).

1. Remove drive shaft from differential. Put matchmarks on flanges. Remove the 4 bolts and nuts. (Scheme 16)
2. Remove drain plug and drain differential oil. (Scheme 28)
3. Remove rear axle shafts. See «REAR AXLE SHAFT»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials).
4. Remove 12 retaining nuts from Differential housing and remove.
5. Remove carrier assembly.

1. Install a new gasket.
2. Install differential carrier assembly into axle and install 12 nuts. Torque to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials__torque-specifications).
3. Connect drive shaft flange to companion flange. Align the matchmarks on the flanges and connect the flanges with 4 bolts and nuts. Torque the 4 bolts and nuts to specifications. 4. Install drain plug and check differential oil level. See «LUBRICATION»(/toyota/corolla/vi-1987-1993/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#differentials). Install filler plug. (Scheme 27)
