INTRODUCTION
Note. References to California models apply to California emission vehicles, which may be verified by underhood Emission Control label. California emissions may be available in other states.
Before testing separate components or systems, perform procedures in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article. Since many computer-controlled and monitored components set a diagnostic trouble code if they malfunction, also perform procedures in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
Note. Testing individual components does not isolate short or open circuits. Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate shorted or open wiring harness.
Note. When performing test procedures, technican may be instructed to use scan tool during testing procedure. This scan tool may be referred to as Toyota hand-held tester. If using OBD-II scan tool, this scan tool may not have all of the capabilities as the Toyota hand-held tester.
ACOUSTIC CONTROL INDUCTION SYSTEM (ACIS)
Note. ACIS may also be referred to as Intake Air Control Valve (IACV) system.
Scheme 298
Scheme 299
- ACIS uses 2 intake air control valves, one on end of air intake chamber and one near throttle bodies. (Scheme 298) Intake air control valve on end of air intake chamber may also be referred to as No. 2 intake air control valve. Intake air control valve near throttle bodies may also be referred to as No. 1 intake air control valve. Operation of actuator valve for each intake air control valve should be checked. Using 3-way connector, connect vacuum gauge in vacuum line to actuator valve for appropriate intake air control valve. (Scheme 299) Start engine. With engine idling, ensure no vacuum reading is obtained.
- Fully open throttle and ensure vacuum reading momentarily reads approximately 7.9 in. Hg and actuator valve rod pulls inward. If actuator valve rod pulls inward, system is operating properly. If actuator valve rod does not pull inward, go to next step.
- Disconnect vacuum hose from appropriate actuator valve. Using vacuum pump, apply 7.9 in. Hg of vacuum to actuator valve. Ensure actuator valve rod pulls inward and remains pulled inward for at least one minute. If actuator valve does not operate properly, replace intake air control valve assembly. If actuator valve operates properly, reconnect vacuum hose. Check ACIS control circuit. See «ACOUSTIC CONTROL INDUCTION SYSTEM (ACIS) CONTROL CIRCUIT»(/toyota/camry-solara/i-1998-2003/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-system-component-testing-v6-v8__acoustic-control-induction-system-acis-control) under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.

FUEL EVAPORATION SYSTEM
Note. Fuel Evaporative (EVAP) system may contain different components depending on application. (Scheme 413)- (Scheme 419). When testing fuel EVAP system components, it may be necessary to use proper illustration to determine component location.

ORVR system consists of fuel inlet pipe, overfill check valve, cut-off valve and charcoal canister. (Scheme 413)- (Scheme 414). Overfill check valve may also be referred to as On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery Overfill Check Valve (ORVR-OCKV) or fill check valve. Cut-off valve may also be referred to On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery Cut-Off Valve (ORVR-COV). For testing of fuel EVAP system and ORVR system, see appropriate FUEL EVAP SYSTEM TEST.
