FUEL PUMP OPERATION

Note. Electric fuel pump operation may be checked by using Toyota hand-held tester or by applying battery voltage to fuel pump. Fuel pump is located in fuel tank.

  1. Connect hand-held tester data link connector No. 3 at driver's side of instrument panel. (Scheme 1)- (Scheme 8). Turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine.
  2. Turn hand-held tester on. Select ACTIVE TEST MODE on hand-held tester. Using hand-held tester manufacturer's instructions, operate fuel pump. Listen for fuel pump operating sound and feel for fuel pressure in fuel inlet line near fuel filter or fuel inlet line at end of fuel rail. Turn ignition off. Remove hand-held tester. If fuel pump operates, check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-151953-S33614114892003010900000).
  3. If fuel pump does not operate, EFI main relay or circuit opening relay may be defective. For relay application and explanation of relay operation, see «FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT»(ref-151953-S23734284352003010900000). For testing of EFI main relay or circuit opening relay, see appropriate relay under «MODULES, MOTORS, RELAYS & SOLENOIDS»(ref-151979-S10779012602003010900000) in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - V6 & V8 article.
  4. If relays are okay, check for defective fuses, fusible links or wiring. See appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If fuses, fusible links and wiring are okay, check for defective fuel pump. If fuel pump operates properly, Engine Control Module (ECM) may be defective. Scheme 9: Checking Fuel Pump Operation Using Toyota Hand-Held Tester (Land Cruiser)

  1. Connect hand-held tester to data link connector No. 3 at driver's side of instrument panel. (Scheme 9) Turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine.
  2. Turn hand-held tester on. Select ACTIVE TEST MODE on hand-held tester. Using hand-held tester manufacturer's instructions, operate fuel pump. Disconnect fuel return hose from clamp on V-bank cover. Remove 2 bolts, nuts and V-bank cover. V-bank cover must be removed for access to fuel pressure pulsation damper located at firewall end of driver's side fuel rail. (Scheme 10) Fuel pressure pulsation damper may also be referred to as pulsation damper.
  3. Listen for fuel pump operating sound and check that screw at center of fuel pressure pulsation damper moves upward due to fuel pressure. (Scheme 10) If fuel pump operates, check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-151953-S33614114892003010900000).
  4. If fuel pump does not operate, EFI main relay, ECM or fuel pump switch may be defective, or fuel pump switch may need to be reset. For explanation of EFI main relay, ECM and fuel pump switch operation, or resetting of fuel pump switch, see «FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT»(ref-151953-S23734284352003010900000).   5. If EFI main relay and fuel pump switch are okay, check for defective fuses or wiring. See appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If fuses and wiring are okay, check for defective fuel pump. See «CHECKING FUEL PUMP OPERATION BY APPLYING BATTERY VOLTAGE TO FUEL PUMP (AVALON, CAMRY SOLARA, HIGHLANDER, LAND CRUISER, SIENNA, TACOMA & 4RUNNER)»(ref-151953-S27682748492003010900000) procedure. If problem exists in fuel pump control circuit, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0230 may be stored in Engine Control Module (ECM). See TESTING PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article for retrieving of DTCs.

  1. Connect hand-held tester to data link connector No. 3 at driver's side of instrument panel. (Scheme 7), (Scheme 8) and (Scheme 11). Turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine.
  2. Turn hand-held tester on. Select ACTIVE TEST MODE on hand-held tester. Using hand-held tester manufacturer's instructions, operate fuel pump. Note location of fuel pressure pulsation damper located at firewall end of driver's side fuel rail. (Scheme 12)and (Scheme 13). Fuel pressure pulsation damper may also be referred to as pulsation damper.
  3. Listen for fuel pump operating sound and check that screw at center of fuel pressure pulsation damper moves upward due to fuel pressure. (Scheme 12)and (Scheme 13). If fuel pump operates, check fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-151953-S33614114892003010900000).
  4. If fuel pump does not operate, EFI main relay, fuel pump relay or circuit opening relay may be defective. If problem exists in fuel pump relay or control circuit, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0230 may be stored in Engine Control Module (ECM).   5. If relays are okay, check for defective fuses, fusible links or wiring. See appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If fuses, fusible links and wiring are okay, check for defective fuel pump. See «CHECKING FUEL PUMP OPERATION BY APPLYING BATTERY VOLTAGE TO FUEL PUMP (SEQUOIA & TUNDRA)»(ref-151953-S29966674782003010900000) or «CHECKING FUEL PUMP OPERATION BY APPLYING BATTERY VOLTAGE TO FUEL PUMP (4RUNNER)»(ref-151953-S36041438212003111100000) procedure. If fuel pump operates properly, Engine Control Module (ECM) may be defective. It maybe necessary to check fuel pump resistor. Checking Fuel Pump Operation By Applying Battery Voltage To Fuel Pump (Avalon, Camry Solara, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Sienna & Tacoma)

  1. On Avalon and Camry Solara, remove rear seat cushion, cover plate on floor panel and remaining necessary covers for access to electrical connector for fuel pump.
  2. On Highlander, remove driver's side and passenger's side rear seats and cover plate on floor panel for access to electrical connector for fuel pump.
  3. On Land Cruiser, remove second seats, rear door scuff plates, step plates, second seat lock covers, front and rear carpet and cover plate on floor panel for access to electrical connector for fuel pump.
  4. On Sienna, manufacturer recommends removing fuel tank for access to fuel pump.
  5. On Tacoma, it may be necessary to lower fuel tank for access to electrical connector for fuel pump. On models with rear seats, it may be possible to access electrical connector for fuel pump by removing driver's side rear seat cushion and cover plate on floor panel.
  6. On all models, disconnect electrical connector for fuel pump. This is electrical connector for fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit and is located on top of fuel tank, near fuel pump.
  7. Connect battery voltage to specified terminals on fuel pump to operate fuel pump. (Scheme 14)- (Scheme 18). DO NOT apply battery voltage to fuel pump for more than 10 seconds.
  8. Listen for fuel pump operating sound. Disconnect battery voltage from fuel pump. If fuel pump operates, check fuel pressure after reinstalling components. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-151953-S33614114892003010900000).
  9. If fuel pump fails to operate, replace fuel pump and/or lead wire to fuel pump (if equipped). See «FUEL PUMP»(ref-151984-S08944363302003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article. Checking Fuel Pump Operation By Applying Battery Voltage To Fuel Pump (Camry)

Note. On Camry, manufacturer lists procedure of applying battery voltage to fuel pump by removing circuit opening relay and checking fuel pump operation as well as wiring circuit to fuel pump. Also, manufacturer lists procedure for checking fuel pump operation by removing fuel pump from fuel tank and applying battery voltage directly to fuel pump. For testing of fuel pump with fuel pump removed from fuel tank, see appropriate FUEL PUMP RESISTANCE & OPERATION procedure under FUEL DELIVERY under FUEL SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - V6 & V8 article.

Scheme 19: Checking Fuel Pump Operation By Applying Battery Voltage To Fuel Pump (Camry)
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Remove circuit opening relay from fuse/relay box. (Scheme 19) Fuse/relay box is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment.
  2. Install jumper wire between FP and +B terminals in fuse/relay box for circuit opening relay. (Scheme 19) Pay attention to terminal connecting position to avoid a malfunction. Turn ignition on and listen for fuel pump operating sound. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Reinstall circuit opening relay.
  3. If fuel pump operates, EFI main relay, wiring circuit for fuel pump and fuel pump are okay. If fuel pump does not operate with jumper wire installed, it may be necessary to check for defective fuses, fusible links, wiring or EFI main relay. See appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If necessary to check fuel pump operation, see appropriate FUEL PUMP RESISTANCE & OPERATION procedure under «FUEL DELIVERY»(ref-151979-S32498706792003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - V6 & V8 article.
  4. If fuel pump operates with jumper wire installed but does not operate with circuit opening relay installed, circuit opening relay may be defective. For relay application and explanation of relay operation, see «FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT»(ref-151953-S23734284352003010900000). For testing of EFI main relay or circuit opening relay, see appropriate relay under «MODULES, MOTORS, RELAYS & SOLENOIDS»(ref-151979-S10779012602003010900000) in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - V6 & V8 article. Engine Control Module (ECM) may be defective if fuel pump still fails to operate. Scheme 20: Checking Fuel Pump Operation By Applying Battery Voltage To Fuel Pump (Sequoia & Tundra)
  1. Manufacturer lists checking fuel pump operation with fuel pump removed from fuel tank and fuel pump mounting bracket. For removal of fuel pump from fuel tank and fuel pump mounting bracket, see «FUEL PUMP»(ref-151984-S08944363302003010900000) under FUEL SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article.
  2. Reinstall lead wire on fuel pump. Connect battery voltage to specified terminals on lead wire to operate fuel pump. (Scheme 20) DO NOT apply battery voltage to fuel pump for more than 10 seconds.
  3. Listen for fuel pump operating sound. Disconnect battery voltage from lead wire. If fuel pump operates, check fuel pressure after reinstalling fuel pump. See «FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-151953-S33614114892003010900000).
  4. If fuel pump fails to operate, replace fuel pump and/or lead wire. If fuel pump will not operate while trying to start engine, see appropriate CHECKING FUEL PUMP OPERATION USING TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER procedure under «FUEL PUMP OPERATION»(ref-151953-S22792763382003010900000) for additional testing information. Checking Fuel Pump Operation By Applying Battery Voltage To Fuel Pump (4Runner)

  1. Ensure ignition is off. Remove circuit opening relay from fuse/relay box. (Scheme 21) Fuse/relay box is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment.
  2. Install jumper wire between FP and +B terminals in fuse/relay box for circuit opening relay. (Scheme 21) Pay attention to terminal connecting position to avoid a malfunction. Turn ignition on and listen for fuel pump operating sound. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Reinstall circuit opening relay.
  3. If fuel pump operates, EFI main relay, wiring circuit for fuel pump and fuel pump are okay. If fuel pump does not operate with jumper wire installed, it may be necessary to check for defective fuses, fusible links, wiring or EFI main relay.
