DESCRIPTION

On all models except Corolla, transmission is equipped with a electronically controlled shift lock and key lock system. (Scheme 119) On Corolla models, a cable operated key lock system is used along with a electronically controlled shift lock system. (Scheme 119) On all models, shift lock system prevents shift lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is depressed. In case of a malfunction, shift lever can be released by depressing shift lock override button, located near shift lever. Key lock system prevents ignition key from being moved from ACC to LOCK position on ignition switch unless shift lever is in Park.

System consists of brakelight switch, key interlock solenoid (except Corolla), shift lock control switch, shift lock Electronic Control Unit (ECU), shift lock solenoid and shift lock override button. (Scheme 121)

Note. Shift lock Electronic Control Unit is referred to as ECU.

SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM

With ignition on, when brake pedal is depressed, an input signal is sent from brakelight switch to the ECU. With shift lever in Park, an input signal from shift control switch is input to ECU, indicating shift lever is in Park. The ECU then operates shift lock solenoid, so shift lever can be moved from Park.

KEY LOCK SYSTEM

Note. On Corolla models, key lock system uses a cable for system operation. On all other models, key lock system is electronically controlled.

Corolla

A parking lock cable is connected between shift lever and ignition lock assembly for control of key lock system. (Scheme 121)

All Others

With ignition in ON or ACC position and shift lever in Park, shift lock control switch opens and voltage from ECU to key interlock solenoid is turned off. When key interlock solenoid is turned off, ignition key can be turned from ACC to LOCK position on ignition switch.

Note. If ignition is left in ACC or ON position with shift lever in any gear range except Park for about one hour, ECU then operates to release the lock mechanism.

Obtain access to ECU. See Figs. 3 to 11. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between designated terminals on ECU with connector installed on ECU. Voltage should be as specified. (Scheme 130)

Note. Connector "A" goes to ignition switch, brakelight switch and key interlock solenoid. Connector "B" goes to shift lock solenoid. Connector "C" goes to shift lock control switch.

Celica, Corolla & MR2

  1. Obtain access to ECU. (Scheme 120) Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between designated terminals on ECU with connector installed on ECU. Voltage should be as specified. (Scheme 134)or 19.
  2. Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between specified terminals. Continuity should be as specified. (Scheme 134)or 19.

Note. On Celica and MR2, connector "A" goes to ignition switch, brakelight switch and key interlock solenoid. Connector "B" goes to shift lock solenoid. Connector "C" goes to shift lock control switch.

Note. On Corolla, connector "A" goes to shift lock solenoid. Connector "B" goes to ignition switch and brakelight switch. Connector "C" goes to shift lock control switch.

Paseo & Tercel

Obtain access to ECU. (Scheme 121) Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between designated terminals on ECU with connector installed on ECU. Voltage should be as specified. (Scheme 139)

Note. Connector "A" goes to ignition switch, brakelight switch and key interlock solenoid. Connector "B" goes to shift lock solenoid and shift lock control switch.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

  1. Disconnect electrical connector from shift lock solenoid. (Scheme 121) Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between electrical terminals of shift lock solenoid.
  2. Replace shift lock solenoid if resistance is not within limits. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(/toyota/4runner/ii-1987-1995/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) table.
  3. Apply battery voltage between electrical terminals of shift lock solenoid. Replace shift lock solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS

Camry, Celica, Cressida, MR2, Paseo, Pickup, Supra & 4Runner

  1. Disconnect electrical connector from key interlock solenoid. (Scheme 121) Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between electrical terminals of key interlock solenoid.
  2. Replace key interlock solenoid if resistance is not 12-17 ohms. Apply battery voltage between electrical terminals of key interlock solenoid. Replace key interlock solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.

Land Cruiser & Tercel

  1. Disconnect electrical connector from key interlock solenoid. (Scheme 121) Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between specified electrical terminals of key interlock solenoid. (Scheme 141)
  2. Replace key interlock solenoid if resistance is not 12-17 ohms. Apply battery voltage between specified electrical terminals of key interlock solenoid. Replace key interlock solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.

SHIFT LOCK CONTROL SWITCH

  1. Disconnect electrical connector from shift lock control switch. (Scheme 121) Note electrical connector terminal identification. (Scheme 143)
  2. Using ohmmeter, check continuity of terminals in relation to shift lever. See «SHIFT LOCK CONTROL SWITCH CONTINUITY»(/toyota/4runner/ii-1987-1995/remont/automatic-trans/#shift-interlock-systems) table. Replace switch if continuity is not as specified.

Note. Continuity must be checked in accordance with position of release button on shift lever and shift lever position.
