INTRODUCTION
Before diagnosing symptoms or intermittent faults, perform steps in BASIC TESTING and TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section. Use this article to diagnose driveability problems existing when a hard fault code is not present or vehicle is not equipped with a self-diagnostic system.
Note. Some driveability problems may have been corrected by manufacturer with a revised computer calibration chip or computer control unit. Check with manufacturer for latest chip or computer application.
Symptom checks can direct the technician to malfunctioning component(s) for further diagnosis. A symptom should lead to a specific component, system test or an adjustment.
Use intermittent test procedures to locate driveability problems that DO NOT occur when the vehicle is being tested. These test procedures should also be used if a soft (intermittent) trouble code was present, but no problem was found during self-diagnostic testing.
Most intermittent problems are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. Perform careful inspection of suspect circuits for
- Poor mating of coupler halves, or terminals not fully seated in coupler body (backed out).
- Terminals damaged or improperly formed. Reform coupler terminals in problem circuit to increase contact tension.
- Poor terminal-to-wire connection.

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless the problem occurs while the vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure steps in BASIC TESTING and TESTS W/CODES articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE Section were performed before diagnosing a symptom. Symptoms available for diagnosis include
- Difficult Or No Start (Cranks Okay)
- Engine Misfires Or Has Lack Of Power
- Rough Or Unstable Idle
- Engine Hesitates
- Engine Surges
- Spark Knock/Detonation
- Poor Fuel Mileage
- Fails Emission Test
- Overheating
DIFFICULT OR NO START (CRANKS OKAY)
- Check for dirty or clogged fuel filter.
- Check for lack of fuel in tank.
- Check fuel pressure and volume.
- Check for contaminated fuel.
- Check for vacuum leaks.
- Check for poor compression.
- Check for blown ignition coil fuse.
- Check for cracked distributor cap or rotor.
- Check ignition and valve timing.
- Check spark plugs.
- Check for adequate spark with a spark tester.
- Check EGR system.
- Check pick-up coil air gap (if equipped).
- Check for faulty ignitor (if equipped).
- Check for faulty pick-up coil (if equipped).
- Check for faulty coolant (water) temperature sensor.
- Check for faulty air temperature sensor (if equipped).
- Check for faulty airflow sensor (if equipped).
- Check for faulty noise suppressor (if equipped).
- Check for faulty air valve (if equipped).
- Check for faulty ignition coil.

ROUGH OR UNSTABLE IDLE
- Check for play in throttle cable.

FAILS EMISSION TEST
- Check for clogged air filter.
- Check for engine not at normal operating temperature.
- Check for fuel leakage from injectors.
- Check for fuel pressure out of specification.
- Check for faulty coolant (water) temperature sensor.
- Check for faulty air temperature sensor (if equipped).
- Check for faulty ECM.
- Check for faulty EGR system.
- Check for improper ignition timing.
- Check for malfunctioning ignition system.
- Check for lead contamination in catalytic converter.
- Check for misrouted vacuum hoses.
- Check for poor compression.
- Check for vacuum leaks.
OVERHEATING
- Check for insufficient coolant.
- Check for loose water pump belt.
- Check for inoperative thermostat.
- Check for poor water pump performance.
- Check for improper ignition timing.
- Check for clogged or leaky radiator.
- Check for improper engine oil grade.
- Check for clogged oil filter.
- Check for not enough oil.
- Check for poor oil pump performance.
- Check for oil leak.
- Check for dragging brakes.
- Check for blown cylinder head gasket.
INTERMITTENT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS
Intermittent fault testing requires duplicating circuit or component failure to identify the problem. These procedures may lead to the computer setting a fault code (on some systems) which may help in diagnosis.
If problem vehicle does not produce fault codes, monitor voltage or resistance values using a DVOM while attempting to reproduce conditions causing intermittent fault. A status change on DVOM indicates a fault has been located.
Use a DVOM to pinpoint faults. When monitoring voltage, ensure ignition switch is in ON position or engine is running. Ensure ignition switch is in OFF position or negative battery cable is disconnected when monitoring circuit resistance. Status changes on DVOM during test procedures indicate area of fault.
Intermittent Simulation
To reproduce the conditions creating an intermittent fault, use the following methods
- Lightly vibrate component.
- Heat component.
- Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
- Spray component with water mist.
- Remove/apply vacuum source.
Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
