Engine Control Module (ECM) Removal and Installation

CAUTIONAs ECM consists of precision parts, be careful not to expose it to excessive shock.

Note. If ECM is replaced with either new one or used one, perform the following procedure. See PROCEDURE AFTER ECM REPLACEMENT . Register VIN data to ECM. See VIN REGISTRATION . For vehicle equipped with immobilizer control system, register immobilizer transponder code to ECM. See REGISTRATION OF THE IGNITION KEY . Calibrate throttle valve position. See ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM CALIBRATION .

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Turn lock lever (1) to arrow direction until it stops and then disconnect connectors from ECM.
  3. Remove ECM and cover from bracket by removing their mounting bolts (2).

  1. Connect connectors to ECM as follows. Make sure that lock levers of ECM connector are in unlock positions. Insert ECM connectors to ECM until it stops. Lock ECM connectors securely by setting their lock levers in their locked position.

  1. Connect SUZUKI scan tool to data link connector (DLC) (1) located on under side of instrument panel at drive's seat side. Special Tool (A): SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
  2. Check the VIN shown on the left side of instrument panel.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
  4. Select "VIN registration" mode of SUZUKI scan tool.
  5. Register VIN according to the instructions indicated on the SUZUKI scan tool. NOTE: For further details, refer to the operator's manual for SUZUKI scan tool.
  6. Before completed the VIN registration, check that VIN data indicated on the SUZUKI scan tool is correct. If not, re-register VIN data into ECM correctly.

  1. Connect SUZUKI scan tool to data link connector (DLC) (1) located on underside of instrument panel at driver's seat side. Special Tool (A): SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
  3. Select "VIN registration" mode of SUZUKI scan tool.
  4. Confirm whether code of 17 digits displayed on SUZUKI scan tool is corresponding to VIN shown on the left side of instrument panel. If displayed VIN does not correspond to instrument panel VIN, register VIN (vehicle identification number) data into ECM referring to «VIN REGISTRATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a) .
  5. Push "EXIT" button of SUZUKI scan tool.

Electric Throttle System On-Vehicle Inspection

WARNINGNever touch throttle valve with finger while ignition switch is in ON position and accelerator pedal is depressed. Otherwise, injury may result by pinching the finger between throttle valve and throttle body.
CAUTIONDo not disassemble throttle body. Do not drop otherwise give excessive shock to throttle body. Throttle body that has experienced any excessive shock must be replaced. Be careful not to accrete foreign materials (like dust and metallic particle) to throttle body and throttle valve. Otherwise, throttle body will break down by throttle valve accretion. Do not apply excessive force to throttle valve for throttle valve operation check and TP sensor performance check. Otherwise, throttle body will break down by damaging internal resinous gear of throttle valve actuator.

Note. After replacing throttle body, calibrate throttle valve position. See ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM CALIBRATION .

  1. Turn off ignition switch.
  2. Remove engine cover.
  3. Remove air cleaner outlet hose (1). See «AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a) .
  4. Check that there isn't any foreign matter caught between throttle valve (1) and throttle body (2). If there is, take it out after removing throttle body and clean inside of throttle body thoroughly. See «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a__throttle-body-removal-and-installation) .
  5. Check throttle valve (1) operation as follows. If faulty condition is found, replace throttle body. See «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a__throttle-body-removal-and-installation) . Throttle valve default position "a": 22° - 27° from completely closed position (1) Check that throttle valve (1) moves smoothly from fully closed position to fully open position with your finger. Check that throttle valve returns to default position when you move finger off throttle valve at fully closed position and fully open position.
  6. Turn ignition switch to ON position.
  7. Check electric throttle body system as follows. If faulty condition is found, go to step 8). Depress accelerator pedal gradually and check that throttle valve moves smoothly until it opens fully. Release accelerator pedal and check that throttle valve moves back to default position.
  8. Check the following. If check results are satisfactory, replace throttle body. Wire harness and connections APP sensor. See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a__accelerator-pedal-position-app-sensor-on-vehicle) . TP sensor: Refer to «THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR PERFORMANCE CHECK»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a) . Throttle actuator: Refer to «THROTTLE ACTUATOR CHECK»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a) .

  1. Turn off ignition switch.
  2. Disconnect connector from throttle body.
  3. Measure resistance between terminals "1" and "2" of electric throttle body assembly. If faulty condition is found, replace throttle body. See «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a__throttle-body-removal-and-installation) .   1. Turn off ignition switch.
  2. Remove air cleaner assembly. See «AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a) .
  3. Remove air cleaner outlet hose.
  4. Disconnect connector from electric throttle body assembly.
  5. Check TP sensor (main and sub) output voltage as follows. If faulty condition is found, replace throttle body. See «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a__throttle-body-removal-and-installation) . Connect three new 1.5 V batteries (1) in series and check that total voltage is 4.5 - 5.0 V. Connect voltmeter (2) and batteries to TP sensor as shown in figure. Check that voltage varies depending on throttle opening angle as shown in figure while throttle valve is opened and closed by finger.

Electric Throttle Control System Calibration

Note. After the following procedure, calibrate throttle position. Shutoff of ECM power supply (i.e. disconnection of battery cable, replacement of battery or blown "ECM" fuse) Replacement of ECM Clearance of DTC related to electric throttle control system Replacement of throttle body

  1. Confirm vehicle condition is as follows. DTC other than P2176 is not detected Engine: Stop Accelerator pedal position: Idle position 5 °C < ECT < 85 °C 5 °C < IAT < 60 °C Battery voltage > 10 V
  2. Select calibration procedure from table below.   3. Perform selected calibration procedure as follows. Calibration procedure [A] Keep ignition switch at ON position for 1 min. or more without running engine. Calibration procedure [B] Disconnect negative cable from battery, and then disconnect connectors from ECM for 30 sec. or more in order to clear calibration data of closed throttle position from ECM. Connect negative cable to battery. Keep ignition switch at ON position for 1 min. or more without running engine.
  4. Clear DTC(s).

Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor On-Vehicle Inspection

CAUTIONDo not drop otherwise give excessive shock to accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor). Accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) that has experienced any excessive shock must be replaced. Be careful not to expose sensor section of accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) to water and oil. Do not disassemble accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor).

  1. Check that accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) has been mounted to vehicle body properly (no pinched floor carpet, etc.). Reinstall accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) if it is not properly mounted. See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY (INCORPORATING APP SENSOR) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a__accelerator-pedal-assembly-incorporating-app-sensor) .
  2. Turn off ignition switch and connect scan tool to DLC. Special Tool : SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
  3. Display "Data List" mode.
  4. Check that voltage varies depending on accelerator position as the following graph. If faulty condition is found, check the followings. Wire harness and connections APP sensor. See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR INSPECTION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a) .

Accelerator Pedal Assembly (Incorporating APP Sensor) Removal and Installation

CAUTIONDo not drop otherwise give excessive shock to accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor). Accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) that has experienced any excessive shock must be replaced. Be careful not to expose sensor section of accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) to water and oil. Do not disassemble accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor).

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Disconnect connector from accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor).
  3. Remove accelerator pedal assembly (incorporating APP sensor) from its bracket.

Reverse removal procedure for installation noting the following.

  1. Tighten accelerator pedal assembly upper nut (1) to specified torque, and then lower nut (2) to specified torque. Tightening torque Accelerator pedal assembly nut* (a): 6 N.m (0.61 kg-m, 4.5 lbf-ft)
  2. Connect connector to APP sensor assembly securely.

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Drain coolant. See «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system-n32a__cooling-system-draining) .
  3. Remove engine cover.
  4. Remove oil level gauge and its guide.
  5. Disconnect ECT sensor connector (1).
  6. Remove ECT sensor from cylinder head.

  1. Tighten new ECT sensor to specified torque. Tightening torque ECT sensor (a): 22 N.m (2.2 kg-m, 16.5 lbf-ft)
  2. Refill cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system-n32a__cooling-system-flushing) .
  3. Check for coolant leakage from ECT sensor with engine running.

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Inspection

Check that resistance between terminals "1" and "2" varies depending on engine coolant temperature.

If faulty condition is found, replace ECT sensor. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

ECT sensor resistance

20 °C (-4 °F): 14.1 - 16.8 kohms

20 °C (68 °F): 2.35 - 2.65 kohms

80 °C (176 °F): 0.313 - 0.332 kohms

  1. Check that HO2S signal is outputted properly. If faulty condition is found, check the following. Wire harness and connections Exhaust system leakage If check result is good, replace faulty HO2S.   1. Turn off ignition switch and disconnect HO2S connector.
  2. Check that voltage of HO2S connector (vehicle side) between terminals "1" and "2" is battery voltage when ignition switch is in ON position. If faulty condition is found, check power supply circuit, ground circuit and connections.
  3. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance of HO2S connector (sensor side) of sensor heater between terminals "3" and "4" at sensor connector. If faulty condition is found, replace faulty HO2S. See «HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a__heated-oxygen-sensor-ho2s-removal-and) . NOTE: Temperature of sensor affects resistance value largely. Make sure that sensor heater is at correct temperature. HO2S heater resistance 5.0 - 6.4 ohms at 20 °C (68 °F)

Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Removal and Installation

Note. For identification of each cylinder and bank, refer to PRECAUTION FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CYLINDER AND BANK .

WARNINGTo avoid danger of being burned, do not touch exhaust system when system is hot. HO2S removal should be performed when system is cool.
  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Disconnect connectors of HO2S.
  3. Remove HO2S (1) from exhaust manifolds.

  2. After installation, check exhaust leakage from sensor with engine running.

  1. Turn off ignition switch.
  2. Disconnect CMP sensor connector.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position and check that voltage of CMP sensor connector (vehicle side) between terminals "1" and "2" is 4 - 6 V. If faulty condition is found, check ECM power supply circuit, ECM ground circuit, wire harness between ECM and CMP sensor and connections.
  4. Check that CMP sensor signal is outputted properly. See «INSPECTION OF ECM AND ITS CIRCUITS»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-general-information-and-diagnosis-n32a) . If faulty condition is found, check the following. Wire harness and connections CMP sensor.   2. Check the following. Check that O-ring (1) is free from damage. Check that end face of sensor and signal rotor tooth are free from any metal particles and damage.
  3. Check CMP sensor as follows. If faulty condition is found, replace CMP sensor. See «CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/engine-control-systems/#engine-electrical-devices-n32a__camshaft-position-cmp-sensor-removal-and) . Connect three new 1.5 V batteries in series and check that total voltage is 4.5 - 5.0 V. Connect batteries (1) and ohmmeter (3) to CMP sensor as shown in figure. Check that CMP sensor resistance varies as specified below by passing magnetic substance (iron) (2). NOTE: Be sure to keep approximately 1 mm (0.03 in) gap "a" between magnetic substance (iron) and end face of CMP sensor.   1. Disconnect connector of CKP sensor wire with ignition switch turned off.
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position and check that voltage of CKP sensor wire connector (vehicle side) between terminals "1" and "2" is 4 - 6 V. If faulty condition is found, check ECM power supply circuit, ECM ground circuit, wire harness between ECM and CKP sensor wire connector and connections.
  3. Check that CKP sensor signal is outputted properly. If faulty condition is found, check the following.   1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.

  3. Remove bank-1 side engine mounting and bracket. See «ENGINE MOUNTINGS COMPONENTS»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a) .
  4. Disconnect connector (2) from CKP sensor (1) as follows. Pull out lock lever (3) in arrow direction. Disconnect connector from CKP sensor while pushing lock button (4).
  5. Remove CKP sensor (1) from cylinder block.

Reverse removal procedure noting the following.

  1. Apply engine oil to O-ring of sensor.
  2. Tighten CKP sensor bolt to specified torque. Tightening torque CKP sensor bolt: 10 N.m (1.0 kg-m, 7.5 lbf-ft) Connect connector and fix wire harness with clamp securely.

NOTE: Be sure to keep approximately 1 mm (0.03 in) gap "a" between magnetic substance (iron) and respect to end face of CKP sensor. CKP sensor resistance Resistance varies between less than 20 ohms and infinity

Knock Sensor Removal and Installation

Note. For identification of each cylinder and bank, refer to PRECAUTION FOR IDENTIFICATION OF CYLINDER AND BANK .

Bank-1

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Remove exhaust manifold. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION (N32A)»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/exhaust/#engine-exhaust-system__exhaust-manifold-removal-and-installation-n32a) .
  3. Remove engine mounting and bracket. See «ENGINE MOUNTINGS COMPONENTS»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a) .
  4. Disconnect knock sensor connector.
  5. Remove knock sensor (1) from cylinder block.

Bank-2

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Disconnect knock sensor connector.
  3. Remove knock sensor (1) from cylinder.

  1. Turn off ignition switch and disconnect MAF & IAT sensor connector.
  2. Check that voltage of MAF & IAT sensor connector (vehicle side) between terminals "1" and "2" is battery voltage when ignition switch is ON. If faulty condition is found, check power supply circuit, ground circuit and connections.
  3. Check that MAF sensor signal is outputted properly. If faulty condition is found, check the following. Wire harness and connections MAF sensor.   2. Connect three new 1.5 V batteries in series and check that total voltage is 4.5 - 5.0 V
  3. Connect 12 V battery (1), 1.5 V batteries (2) and 1.2 kohms resister (3) to MAF sensor as shown in figure.
  4. Connect oscilloscope (5) or multimeter (4) to MAF sensor as shown in figure.
  5. Check that waveform or frequency varies depending on amount of blowing air to air intake vent (6) using oscilloscope or frequency range of multimeter. If faulty condition is found, replace MAF & IAT sensor.   1. Remove OCV. See «OCV REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/suzuki/grand-vitara/ii-2008-2012/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-n32a) . Check OCV as follows. If faulty condition is found, replace OCV. Check that surface of strainer part (1) is not clog get and free from foreign material. Check that surface of OCV is free from damage.
  2. Check OCV as follows. If faulty condition is found, replace OCV. Measure resistance between terminals. If resistance is within specification, go to step b). OCV resistance 7.15 - 7.25 ohms at 20 °C (68 °F) Connect 12 V battery to terminals, and then confirm actuation of spool (1). CAUTION: Do not apply voltage to OCV for 5 sec. or more. Otherwise, coil of OCV will be damaged. To avoid over-current caused by short circuit in OCV, use circuit fuse (2) into circuit between battery positive terminal and OCV terminal.

  2. Remove main relay (1) from fuse box (2).
  3. Check that there is no continuity between terminal "C" and "D". If there is continuity, replace relay.
  4. Connect battery positive (+) terminal to terminal "B" of relay. Connect battery negative (-) terminal to terminal "A" of relay. Check for continuity between terminal "C" and "D". If there is no continuity when relay is connected to the battery, replace defective relay.

  1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
  2. Remove integration relay No. 2 (1) from fuse box (2).
  3. Check that there is no continuity between terminals "[A]-1" and "[B]-8" of relay. If there is continuity, replace relay.
  4. Connect battery positive (+) terminal to "[B]-7" terminal of relay. Connect battery negative (-) terminal to "[B]-6" terminal of relay. Check for continuity between terminal "[A]-1" and "[B]-8". If there is no continuity when relay is connected to the battery, replace integration relay No. 2.
