MODE CONTROL SWITCH

The mode control switch consists of 5 function buttons located in upper portion of control panel. Mode control switch controls the flow of air into the vehicle. Switch functions are indicated by standard icons on each button. (Scheme 4) Light in each button is illuminated when requested function is in operation. When vent button is pressed, air is discharged from the center and side outlets of the instrument panel. When bi-level button is pressed, warm air is discharged from the floor outlets and cooler air is discharged from center and side outlets (when temperature control lever is in maximum heating or cooling position, all outlets will discharge air at chosen temperature).

When heat button is pressed, heated air is discharged from the floor outlets only. If heat and defrost function is actuated, heated air is discharged from floor outlets and windshield and side defroster outlets. When defrost button is pressed, heated air is discharged from the windshield and side defroster outlets.

FRESH/RECIRCULATED AIR CONTROL LEVER

The fresh/recirculated air control lever allows either fresh or recirculated air into the passenger compartment. (Scheme 4)

TEMPERATURE CONTROL LEVER

The temperature control lever mechanically controls a damper door, regulating the volume of air going through or by-passing the heater core. This blending of warm and cool air controls the temperature of air entering passenger compartment. (Scheme 4)

BLOWER LEVER

The blower lever controls blower motor speed. (Scheme 4) When lever is in OFF position, ram air generated by vehicle motion will continue to enter the passenger compartment.

CONTROL CABLES

All control cables are adjusted in a similar manner. Ensure the cable ends are secured to the appropriate levers at the control panel and the heater case. Verify that cable end at the control panel is at maximum pull position. Clamp cable housing in cable guide. Check cable operation.

BLOWER MOTOR WILL NOT RUN

Check fuse. Check blower motor resistor for damage. Check blower motor and blower motor resistor continuity. See BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR under TESTING.

INCORRECT TEMPERATURE OUTPUT

Control cable is broken or binding. Check cables, and adjust them as necessary. Air damper broken. Repair air damper. Air ducts are restricted. Repair ducts as necessary. Heater core is leaking or clogged. Replace or flush heater core. Heater hoses are leaking, kinked or clogged. Replace or reroute heater hoses.

BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR

Using an ohmmeter, check terminal-to-terminal resistance between all blower motor resistor terminals. Blower motor resistor is located behind glove box on blower motor case. If continuity does not exist between any 2 terminals, replace blower motor resistor.

BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH

Check continuity between blower motor switch terminals. See BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST table. Replace blower switch if continuity is not as specified.
