Note. It is possible to remove engine with transaxle remaining in vehicle. Removal procedure given is with transaxle remaining in vehicle.

Removal

  1. Fuel pressure must be released. Disconnect fuel pump wiring connector. Start engine and operate until engine stalls. Crank engine for approximately 5 seconds. With ignition off, reconnect fuel pump wiring connector.
  2. Drain cooling system and remove coolant hoses and radiator. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect fuel lines. Mark and disconnect vacuum hoses and electrical connectors. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables.
  3. Disconnect exhaust pipe at cylinder head and rear exhaust pipe and remove. Remove air intake and air cleaner. Discharge A/C system. Remove and plug lines at A/C compressor.
  4. On A/T models, remove torque converter bolts. These bolts can be reached through the timing hole plug. On all models, remove bolts from support rod-to-engine at the frame. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember bolts.
  5. Support engine and remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Support transaxle and remove engine.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. On M/T models, apply small amount of grease to transaxle mainshaft splines prior to installing engine.
