SUBARU AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION APPLICATIONS
SERVICE INTERVALS
Check fluid level in transaxle and front differential every 5 months or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. Transaxle fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles or 30 months and band adjusted as necessary. No oil change is necessary on front differential.
Transaxle
- Bring engine to normal operating temperature. Park vehicle on level floor. Engage transaxle in all gear positions.
- Set transmission selector lever in the "P" position with engine idling. Remove dipstick and clean with lint-free cloth. Insert and remove dipstick. Fluid level should be above center of upper and lower marks. Add if necessary. DO NOT overfill.
Front Differential
Use dipstick marked "DIFF OIL" on top of front differential to check fluid level. Level should be between "L" and "F" marks. Add fluid if necessary.
Use Dexron ATF on Hatchback. All others use Dexron II ATF.
Use API GL-5 SAE 80W-90.

FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CAPACITIES
- Remove drain plug and drain fluid. If oil screen is to be cleaned, remove oil pan. Oil screen retaining bolts should be tightened to 30-40 INCH lbs. (3.4-4.4 N.m) on XT Series and 53-71 INCH lbs. (6-8 N.m) on all others.
- Replace oil pan with new gasket. Tighten oil pan bolts to 30-40 INCH lbs. (3.4-4.4 N.m). Install drain plug with new gasket. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
- Fill transmission with about 3 qts. of ATF. Start engine and check fluid level with engine idling. Add fluid as necessary. DO NOT overfill.
Front differential has separate drain plug from transaxle if fluid needs to be changed.
BRAKE BAND ADJUSTMENT
Adjustment is made at left side of transaxle. Loosen lock nut on band adjusting screw and tighten screw to 78 INCH lbs. (9 N.m). Loosen screw 2 turns and hold stationary. Tightening lock nut to 20 ft. lbs. (26 N.m).
SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
- Shift cable adjustment is made at bottom of gearshift lever. Place gearshift lever in the "N" position. Loosen lock nuts on both sides of inner cable. (Scheme 76)
- Lightly push selector lever away from lock nut "B". Tighten lock nut "A" until it contacts selector lever trunnion. Tighten lock nut "B" to 9-17 ft. lbs. (13-23 N.m).

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ADJUSTMENT
- Loosen 3 neutral switch mounting bolts. Move gear selector lever to the "N" position.
- Insert Stopper Pin (499267300) as vertically as possible into holes in neutral safety switch lever and switch body. Tighten mounting bolts to 22 INCH lbs. (2.5 N.m). (Scheme 77)
