PROCEDURE

CAUTIONSubaru Select Monitor is required for reading DTC, performing diagnosis, reading current data, customizing and active test (compulsory drive). Remove foreign matter (dust, water, oil, etc.) from each control module connector during removal and installation. For model with immobilizer or model with keyless access, registration of immobilizer may be needed after the replacement of controller etc. For details, refer to the PC application help for Subaru Select Monitor.

Note. To check harness for open or short circuits, shake the suspected trouble spot or connector. Check List for Interview Ref. to CHECK LIST FOR INTERVIEW .

1 CHECK PRE-INSPECTION. Ask the customer when and how the trouble occurred using the interview check list. Ref. to CHECK LIST FOR INTERVIEW .Did you interview the customer?Go to step 2 .Interview the customer.
2 BASIC INSPECTION. Check components which might affect CAN communication problem. Ref. to INSPECTION , General Description.Is the component that might affect CAN communication problem normal?Go to step 3 .Repair or replace each component.
3 CHECK DTC. Start the engine and read all DTCs. NOTE: When the engine does not start, perform the diagnosis for the engine start malfunction. Ref. to DIAGNOSTICS FOR ENGINE STARTING FAILURE . If the communication function of the Subaru Select Monitor cannot be executed properly, check the communication circuit. Ref. to COMMUNICATION FOR INITIALIZING IMPOSSIBLE , Diagnostic Procedure with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). Record all DTCs and freeze frame data.Is DTC regarding CAN communication displayed on Subaru Select Monitor?Go to step 5 .Go to step 4 .
4 PERFORM GENERAL DIAGNOSTICS. Inspect using "General Diagnostics Table". Ref. to GENERAL DIAGNOSTIC TABLE .Is result of inspection OK?LAN system is normal.Go to step 5 .
5 PERFORM DIAGNOSIS. Correct the cause of trouble. Perform the Clear Memory Mode. Ref. to OPERATION , Clear Memory Mode. Read the DTC. Ref. to OPERATION , Read Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).Is DTC displayed on Subaru Select Monitor?Repeat step 5 until DTC is not shown.Finish the diagnosis.
NOTE
When the engine does not start, perform the diagnosis for the engine start malfunction. Ref. to DIAGNOSTICS FOR ENGINE STARTING FAILURE . If the communication function of the Subaru Select Monitor cannot be executed properly, check the communication circuit. Ref. to COMMUNICATION FOR INITIALIZING IMPOSSIBLE , Diagnostic Procedure with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM "AIRBAG"

Airbag system wiring harness is routed near the body integrated unit and twisted pair line.

CAUTIONDo not use the electrical test equipment on all airbag system wiring harnesses and connectors. Be careful not to damage the airbag system wiring harness when servicing the body integrated unit and LAN system.

  1. Bus line of LAN system is twisted pair line. Be careful not to by-pass or partly unbind the twisted pair line.
  2. Do not make clearance between bus lines (CAN High, CAN Low).
  3. Difference of bus line length should be within 10 cm (3.94 in).
  4. Fray near the connector should be within 8 cm (3.14 in).
  5. If the characteristics of the twisted pair line are changed, it may extremely weaken against noise.
  6. When repairing the harness, connect the wires using soldering and protect it with insulating tape etc.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE CHART

55 ohms OR LESS

Note. When the bus line is measured, combined resistance of end resistance (120 ohms) in ECM and end resistance (120 D) in VDC CM can be measured. The combined resistance is approximately 56 - 64 ohms. When the measured resistance value is 55 ohms or less, main wiring harness or related lines may be shorted, or combined resistance may have changed because resistance other than end resistance is created on the circuit.

9 CHECK CONTROL MODULE. With a tester connected, disconnect control modules in order. DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE CHART

65 ohms OR MORE

Note. When CAN communication circuit is measured, combined resistance of end resistance (120 ohms) in ECM and end resistance (120 ohms) in VDC CM can be measured. The combined resistance is approximately 56 - 64 ohms When the measured resistance value is 65 ohms or more, either of end resistance or main wiring harness may have malfunction such as open circuit.
