RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Note. On vehicles with electronic chassis controls, all systems should be functional before attempting riding height or wheel alignment adjustment.

Before adjusting alignment, check riding height. Riding height must be checked with vehicle on level floor and tires properly inflated. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.

Visually inspect vehicle for signs of abnormal height from front to rear or side to side. Check passenger and luggage compartments for extra heavy items and remove if present. If riding height is not within specifications listed, check, repair or replace suspension components.

Note. For vehicles not listed, riding height between front and rear, left and right sides of vehicle should vary less than .39" (10 mm).

Justy

Measure front riding height (ground clearance) between transverse link mounting bolt and ground. (Scheme 1) Measure rear riding height (ground clearance) between ground and bottom of rear trailing link front bushing. Adjust to specifications. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

Legacy

Measure front and rear riding height from horizontal center line of wheel axle shaft to bottom line of body/fender wheel opening (directly above vertical center line of axle shaft). Adjust to specifications. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

Loyale

Measure front riding height (ground clearance) between transverse link front mounting bolt and ground. Measure rear riding height (ground clearance) between ground and bottom, outer end of rear crossmember pipe (below point where outer arm bolts to rear crossmember pipe). (Scheme 2) Adjust to specifications. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

XT & XT6 2WD

Information is not available.

XT & XT6 4WD

Measure front riding height (ground clearance) between transverse link front mounting bolt and ground. Measure rear riding height (ground clearance) between ground and bottom, outer end of rear crossmember pipe (below point where outer arm bolts to rear crossmember pipe). (Scheme 2) Adjust to specifications. See RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS table.

FLOOR JACK

Using a garage-type floor jack, vehicles can be lifted at following points: under rear differential case on 4WD models, under center of rear crossmember on 2WD models and under engine center support crossmember (if equipped).

HOIST/LIFT & EMERGENCY JACKING

Lower body seam areas indicated in illustration by circles, are specifically designed to facilitate use of vehicle's own jack. (Scheme 3) These jacking points are also to be used by hoist/lift pads. If floor jack is used at these points, extreme care should be taken to avoid damaging outer body shell.

Justy (Front & Rear)

Camber and caster are not adjustable. If measurements are not within specifications, check for frame damage, transverse link damage, or worn out components (struts/springs, ball joint, etc.).

Legacy (Front)

Loosen both lower strut mounting bolts so strut can rotate. (Scheme 4) Turn strut adjusting bolt to adjust camber. Strut adjusting bolt has eccentric cam head to force strut to positive or negative camber adjustment. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Adjusting Front Camber (Legacy) Courtesy of Subaru of America, Inc. Scheme 4

Scheme 4: Adjusting Front Camber (Legacy) Courtesy of Subaru of America, Inc.

Legacy (Rear)

Camber is not adjustable. If camber measurement is not within specification, check for frame damage, lateral link damage or worn out components (struts/springs, joints, etc.).

Loyale (Front)

Camber and caster are not adjustable. If measurements are not within specifications, check for frame damage, transverse link damage, or worn out components (struts/springs, ball joint, etc.).

Scheme 5

Scheme 5: Loyale, XT & XT6 (Rear)
  1. Remove wheel. Remove lower shock bolt at inner arm (if necessary). Loosen outer arm mounting bolts. (Scheme 5) If camber angle measurement is too positive, use a lever to increase angle "0" between inner arm and outer arm. (Scheme 5) (Scheme 5): Adjusting Rear Camber & Toe-In (Loyale, XT & XT6) Courtesy of Subaru of America, Inc.
  2. If camber angle measurement is too negative, use lever to decrease angle "0" between inner arm and outer arm. Changing camber angle will change toe-in measurement. Changing toe-in will change camber angle. Tighten outer arm mounting bolts to 94-108 ft. lbs. (127-147 N.m).

XT & XT6 (Front)

Camber and caster are not adjustable. If measurements are not within specifications, check for frame damage, transverse link damage or worn out components (struts/springs, ball joint, etc.).

All Models (Front)

Caster is not adjustable. If measurement is not within specification, check for frame damage, transverse link damage, or worn out components (struts, ball joint, etc.).

  1. Ensure tires are inflated to specification. Ensure riding height and normal riding load are set. Lock steering wheel to straight-ahead center position.
  2. Loosen both tie rod lock nuts. Turn both tie rods equal amounts until within toe-in specifications. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(/subaru/legacy/bcbjbf-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures) . Tighten lock nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/subaru/legacy/bcbjbf-1989-1994/remont/wheel-alignment/#wheel-alignment-specifications-procedures__torque-specifications) .

Justy (Rear)

  1. Ensure tires are inflated to specification. Ensure riding height and normal riding load are set. Release parking brake. Loosen trailing arm cam bolt one turn. (Scheme 1)
  2. Turn cam bolt 2 scale notches in opposite direction of required adjustment in order to remove any free play. Slowly turn cam bolt back in adjusting direction until correct toe-in specification is achieved. Tighten cam bolt to 43-51 ft. lbs. (59-69 N.m).

Legacy 2WD (Rear)

Loosen adjusting bolt on rear lateral link. (Scheme 6) Using spanner wheel wrench, turn adjusting wheel counter-clockwise to change toe-in angle. Turn adjusting wheel clockwise to change toe-out angle. Tighten adjusting bolt to 87-116 ft. lbs. (118-157 N.m).

Adjusting Rear Toe-In (Legacy) Courtesy of Subaru of America, Inc. Scheme 6

Scheme 6: Adjusting Rear Toe-In (Legacy) Courtesy of Subaru of America, Inc.

Legacy 4WD (Rear)

Loosen adjusting bolt for rear lateral link. (Scheme 6) Turn eccentric cam bolt head counterclockwise to change toe-out angle. Turn eccentric cam bolt head clockwise to change toe-in angle. Tighten adjusting bolt to 61-83 ft. lbs. (83-113 N.m).

Loyale, XT & XT6 (Rear)

  1. Remove wheel. Loosen outer arm mounting bolts. (Scheme 5) If toe-in is excessive, push/pull rear axle toward rear of vehicle while tightening outer arm mounting bolts.
  2. If toe-out is excessive, push/pull rear axle toward front of vehicle while tightening outer arm mounting bolts. Changing toe-in will change camber angle. Changing camber angle will change toe-in measurement. Tighten outer arm mounting bolts to 94-108 ft. lbs. (127-147 N.m).
