TRANSAXLE APPLICATION

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner. On 1997 Impreza, remove hill-holder cable, lock nut and clips. On all models, remove clutch cable or slave cylinder. Remove speedometer cable and clip (Impreza).
  2. On all models, label and disconnect wiring and hoses connected to transaxle. Disconnect oxygen sensor connectors. Remove neutral position switch, back-up light switch and speed sensor connectors. Remove torque strut located between engine and vehicle body. Remove starter.
  3. Install Engine Supporter (927670000) between engine and vehicle body. Remove front and rear exhaust pipe. Remove heat shield. Remove front crossmember (if equipped). Mark drive shaft for installation reference, and remove drive shaft. Remove center drive shaft bearing.
  4. Plug opening at rear of extension housing. Remove select rod from transfer rail. Remove transaxle hanger bracket. Disconnect spring, gearshift rod and brace from transaxle.
  5. Using a pin punch, drive out each axle shaft roll pin. Remove stabilizer bar from transverse link. Remove hand brake cable bracket from transverse link (lower control arm). Remove transverse link bolt at crossmember. Separate axle shafts from transaxle.
  6. Remove engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts/nuts. Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove rear cushion mounting nuts and remove rear crossmember. Separate transaxle from engine.
  7. Remove transaxle from vehicle. Remove pressure plate and clutch disc from flywheel. (Scheme 27) Remove release bearing, bearing holder and clutch release lever from transaxle.
