Cruise Control System: Overview Subaru Forester SF

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGDeactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.

Throttle plate position is controlled by vacuum operated actuator in engine compartment. Vacuum supply to actuator is controlled by a valve and pump assembly that contains a vacuum pump motor, vent valve and safety valve. Valve and pump assembly receives commands from cruise control module. Cruise control module receives inputs from the following components.

  1. Brake/Stoplight Switch
  2. Clutch Switch (M/T)
  3. Cruise Control Command Switch Containing ACCEL, RESUME, SET And CANCEL Switches (Mounted On Steering Wheel)
  4. Horn Relay
  5. Inhibitor Relay (A/T)
  6. Main Switch On Instrument Panel
  7. Transmission Control Module (A/T)
  8. Vehicle Speed Sensor No. 2

The system is equipped with on-board diagnostics. Cruise cancel conditions and real-time diagnosis can be performed using Subaru Select Monitor (24082AA010) scan tool or equivalent. A Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set when a cruise control related problem arises. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .

GENERAL INFORMATION

On-board diagnostic function of cruise control system requires the use of Subaru Select Monitor (24082AA010) or equivalent scan tool. On-board diagnostic function operates in 2 categories: cruise cancel condition diagnosis and real-time diagnosis.

Cruise cancel condition diagnosis category requires a test drive to determine cause of malfunction. Cruise control module memory stores the condition which occurred during test drive. When more than one cancel condition occurs during test drive, they are shown in numerical order on scan tool.

Real-time diagnosis is used to determine whether or not input signals are in good order. Vehicle cannot be driven during this test. Dummy signals are entered to various components of cruise control system and scan tool.
