Scheme 2

Scheme 2: Actuator motors, component description - GF83.10-P-2201MCC

Blend air flap actuator

The blend air flap actuator is used to adjust the ventilation temperature of the vehicle interior.

The blend air flap actuator is actuated via the heater/AC operating unit depending on the position of the temperature preselection slider switch and the actual interior temperature according to defined characteristics and moves the blend air flap.

The blend air flap opens or closes the air passage in order to achieve the desired interior temperature.

The specified flap angle of the blend air flap is determined by the heater/AC operating unit depending on the following information

  1. Specified temperature set on the temperature preselection slider switch
  2. Measured interior temperature
  3. Temperature measured at the evaporator
  4. Coolant temperature

The blend air flap actuator reports its position to the heater/AC operating unit via an integrated potentiometer.

Recirculated air flap actuator motor

The air recirculation flap actuator motor is used to close or open the air recirculation flap. This allows or prevents the fresh air supply from the outside into the air conditioner housing. When the air recirculation switch (N23s3) on the heater/AC operating unit is pressed, the air recirculation flap actuator motor is actuated.

In air recirculation mode, air is drawn out of the vehicle interior into the air conditioner housing.

MODEL 451.3 /4

Scheme 3

Scheme 3: Heating system heat exchanger, component description - GF83.20-P-3123MCU

Location

The heater heat exchanger is located in the left of the front passenger footwell.

Task

The heater heat exchanger warms the air flow which is directed to the vehicle interior via the various air distribution vents.

Design

The heater heat exchanger consists of coiled pipes and slats in order to offer the largest surface possible for the heat output.

Function

Coolant heated by the engine flows through the heater heat exchanger.

The inflow is regulated by the thermostat of the cooling-water circulation. The heat is dissipated via the coiled pipes and lamellae made of aluminum towards the outside to the air blowing by, which is heated up in the process and then routed into the vehicle interior.

Condenser, component description - GF83.40-P-2188MCC

MODEL 451.3 /4 with CODE (I01) Air conditioning Plus

Scheme 6

Scheme 6: Condenser, component description - GF83.40-P-2188MCC

Location

The condenser is located behind the radiator grille, immediately in front of the radiator.

Task

The compressed refrigerant is cooled in the condenser. This changes the state of the matter from gaseous to liquid.

Function

The hot coolant coming from the refrigerant compressor is pressed upwards into the condenser. Coiled pipes and fins absorb this heat extremely rapidly and give it off into the outside air flowing through the condenser.

This serves to cool the refrigerant.

As the refrigerant cools, the refrigerant condenses and turns to a liquid. As it flows through the desiccant cartridge mounted directly onto the condenser, the refrigerant is cleaned of chemical and mechanical impurities.

Scheme 7

Scheme 7: Evaporator, component description - GF83.40-P-2189MCC

Location

MODEL 451.3 /4 with CODE (I01) Air conditioning Plus

Scheme 8

Scheme 8: Expansion valve, component description - GF83.40-P-2190MCC

Location

The expansion valve is located in the front module, immediately behind the cooler.

Task

The expansion valve separates the refrigerant circuit's high-pressure area from the low-pressure area.

Function

When the refrigerant compressor (A9) is switched on, the pressure in the evaporator decreases causing a diaphragm in the expansion valve to arch. The diaphragm motion is transferred to a linkage. The linkage presses the valve ball out of its seat opening the valve. The opened valve enables the refrigerant to be sprayed into the evaporator.

Location

The heater/AC operating unit is located in the center console.

The heater/AC operating unit permits the following operations

  1. Interior temperature selection cold/warm
  2. Manual blower control
  3. Manual air distribution

  1. Temperature preselection slider switch
  2. Air distribution rotary switch
  3. Blower switch
  4. Heated rear window switch

Temperature preselection slider switch

The intensity of air heating is selected via the slider switch.

A cable is used to operate the blend air flap, which routes the air flow corresponding to the position of the slider switch over the heater heat exchanger or directly to the air outlet nozzles in the vehicle interior.

Air distribution rotary switch

The air outlet nozzles are selected via the air distribution rotary switch.

For this purpose, 12 positions of the air distribution rotary switch are available, which are arranged in the following 3 main directions.

  1. Windshield
  2. Footwell
  3. Passenger compartment

Blower switch

The 3-stage blower switch is used to define the intensity of the air the blower motor (M2) delivers into the vehicle interior.

Rear windshield heater

The heater/AC operating unit transmits, after the heated rear window switch is pressed, a switch-on request to the SAM control unit (N10/10), which energizes the heated rear window (R1). Simultaneously, the function LED in the heated rear window switch is switched on. If the heated rear window switch is pressed again, the actuation of the heated rear window is terminated.

Scheme 11

Scheme 11: Component description for the heater/air conditioning operating unit - GF83.40-P-3001MCU

  5. Recirculated air mode
  6. Defrost function
  7. Rear window heater

The heater/AC operating unit takes over the following actuations

Via Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN)

  1. Refrigerant compressor (A9) via the SAM control unit (N10/10)
  2. Blower motor (M2) via the SAM control unit

The heater/AC operating unit reads in the following sensor signals

  1. Direct: Interior temperature sensor (integrated in heater/AC operating unit) Evaporator temperature sensor (B10/6) Blend air flap actuator
  2. Via CAN: Outside temperature through the instrument cluster (A1) Coolant temperature through the ME control unit (N3/10)

Design

The heater/AC operating unit contains the following controls and displays

  1. Air distribution rotary switch
  2. Temperature preselection slider switch
  3. Air conditioning switch
  4. Air recirculation switch
  5. Blower switch
  6. Heated rear window switch

Air distribution rotary switch

The air distribution rotary switch is used to adjust which air outlet nozzles the air supplied by the blower motor (M2) is routed through into the interior.

For this purpose, 12 positions of the air distribution rotary switch are available, which are arranged in the following 3 main directions.

  1. Defrost windshield
  2. Footwell
  3. Passenger compartment

If the air distribution rotary switch is turned to "Defrost windshield", the automatic air conditioning is switched on automatically without this being indicated by the light-emitting diode in the air conditioning switch. As long as the air distribution rotary switch is in this position, the automatic climate control cannot be switched off. The set temperature does not have any influence on this function

Temperature preselection slider switch

The temperature preselection slider switch is used to determine, how much the air delivered by the blower motor is warmed up. The temperature preselection slider switch is read in by the heater/air conditioner operating unit, which actuates the blend air flap via the blend air flap actuator.

Air conditioning switch

The air conditioning switch is used to switch the automatic air conditioning on or off.

At outside temperatures below 3°C, the refrigerant compressor cannot be activated

Air recirculation switch

When the air recirculation switch is operated, the heater/AC operating unit actuates the air recirculation flap actuator motor in order to close the air recirculation flap. When the air recirculation flap is closed, air supply from the outside is prevented. The LED in the air recirculation switch lights up during operation.

Blower switch

The 4-stage blower switch is used to define the intensity of the air the blower motor delivers into the vehicle interior.

Heated rear window switch

The heater/AC operating unit transmits, after the heated rear window switch is pressed, a switch-on request to the SAM control unit, which energizes the heated rear window (R1). Simultaneously, the LED in the rear window heater switch is switched on. If the heated rear window switch is pressed again, the actuation of the heated rear window is terminated.
