  1. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system-inspection)

  4. INSPECT AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the air cleaner cap. Remove the air filter element. Visually check that the air filter is not excessively damaged or oily. If necessary, replace the air filter.
  5. INSPECT SPARK PLUG . Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-inspection)
  6. INSPECT FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT See step 1
  7. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING NOTE: Turn all the electrical systems and the A/C OFF. When checking the ignition timing, shift the transmission to the neutral position. Warm up and stop the engine. When using the Techstream: Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Power Train / Engine and ECT / Data List / IGN Advance Start the engine. According to the display on Techstream, read the Data List. Standard ignition timing BTDC 0 to 15° at idle Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3. When not using the Techstream: Remove the No. 1 engine cover. Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 1»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-service-information) . Open the ignition cover located to the right of the No. 4 ignition coil. Pull the wire harness out from the IG cover. Connect a timing light to the wire harness. NOTE: Use a timing light that detects the first signal. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3. SST: 09843-18040 Allow the engine to idle and check the ignition timing. Standard ignition timing BTDC 8 to 12°at idle HINT: Run the engine at 1000 to 1300 RPM for 5 seconds, then check that the engine speed returns to the idling speed. Remove SST from the DLC3. Allow the engine to idle and check the ignition timing. Standard ignition timing BTDC 5 to 15° Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Remove the timing light. Close the IG cover. Install the No. 1 engine cover. Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 4»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-service-information) .
  8. INSPECT ENGINE IDLING SPEED NOTE: Turn all the electrical systems and the A/C OFF. When checking the ignition timing, shift the transmission to the P or neutral position. When using the Techstream: Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Power Train / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed Start the engine. According to the display on Techstream, read the Data List. Standard idle speed 600 to 700 RPM Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3. When not using the Techstream: Turn OFF all the accessories and air conditioning. Move the shift lever to P or neutral. Connect SST to 9 (TAC) of the DLC3 terminal, and then connect a tachometer to SST. SST: 09843-18030 Warm up the engine. Check the idle speed while the radiator-cooling fan is not rotating. Standard idle speed 600 to 700 RPM Turn the ignition switch OFF. Remove the tachometer and disconnect SST from the DLC3.
  9. INSPECT COMPRESSION Warm up and then stop the engine. Remove the 4 ignition coils and spark plugs. Refer to «REMOVAL»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-service-information) . Disconnect the 4 fuel injector connectors. Set SST and a compression gauge. SST: 09992-00500 Insert the compression gauge into the spark plug hole. While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure. Standard compression pressure 1300 kPa (13.3 kgf/cm 2 , 189 psi) Minimum compression pressure 1000 kPa (10.0 kgf/cm 2 , 145 psi) Standard difference between each cylinder 100 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm 2 , 15 psi) NOTE: Always use a fully charged battery to obtain an engine speed of 250 RPM or more. Check the other cylinders' compression pressures in the same way. This measurement must be done as quickly as possible. If the cylinder compression is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and inspect again. HINT: If adding oil increases the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged. If pressure stays low, a valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage in the gasket. Connect the 4 fuel injector connectors. Install the 4 spark plugs and ignition coils. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(/scion/xb/ii-2010-2015/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-service-information__installation)
  10. INSPECT CO/HC HINT: The ECM properly controls the CO/HC concentration in the emission gas. Start and warm up the engine. Run the engine at 2500 RPM for approximately 180 seconds. Insert the CO/HC meter testing probe at least 40 cm (1.3 ft.) into the tailpipe while idling. Inspect the CO/HC concentration while idling and/or at 2500 RPM. If the CO/HC concentration is not as specified, perform troubleshooting. HINT: See the table below for possible causes, and then inspect and repair the applicable causes if necessary. CO HC Problems Causes Normal High Rough idle 1. Faulty ignition: - Incorrect timing - Plugs are contaminated, shorted, or gaps are defective 2. Incorrect valve clearance 3. Leaks in intake and exhaust valve 4. Leaks in cylinders Low High Rough idle (Fluctuating HC reading) 1. Vacuum leakage: - Ventilation hoses - Intake manifold - Throttle body - Brake booster line 2. Lean mixture causing misfire High High Rough idle (Black smoke from exhaust) 1. Restricted air filter 2. Plugged PCV valve 3. Faulty SFI system: - Faulty pressure regulator - Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor - Faulty mass air flow meter - Faulty ECM - Faulty injectors - Faulty throttle body

  1. CHECK FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT Visually check the drive belt for excessive wear, frayed cords, etc. If any defect has been found, replace the drive belt. HINT: Cracks on the rib side of a drive belt are considered acceptable. If the drive belt has chunks missing from the ribs, it should be replaced. After installing the drive belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the crank pulley. HINT: A "new belt" is a belt which has been used for less than 5 minutes on a running engine. A "used belt" is a belt which has been used on a running engine for 5 minutes or more. After installing a new belt, run the engine for approximately 5 minutes and then recheck the tension.

  1. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
  2. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT Using SST and 19 mm socket wrench, loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then remove the fan and generator V belt. SST: 09216-42010 09216-04010 NOTE: Be sure to connect SST and the tools so that they are in line during use. When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly for 3 seconds or more. Do not apply force rapidly. After the tensioner is fully retracted, do not apply force any more than necessary.
