REMOVAL

WARNINGSome of these service operations affect the SRS. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS before servicing the steering column. Refer to PRECAUTION . Be sure to read Precaution thoroughly before servicing. Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL WARNING: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to INITIALIZATION .
  3. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Refer to REMOVAL
  4. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER NOTE: Removing the steering column cover incorrectly will cause the steering column cover to break. Push the right and left sides of the lower cover and detach the 4 claws. Insert your fingers into the opening of the tilt lever of the lower cover to detach the claw. HINT: Spread the claw to detach it. Turn the lower cover to detach the 2 claws and remove the lower cover as shown in the illustration. Detach the claw and 2 pins and remove the upper cover.
  5. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors from the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly. Use pliers to hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Remove the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.   6. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET Fold back the floor carpet, and then remove the 2 clips and column hole cover silencer sheet.
  7. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Remove the bolt. NOTE: Do not disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Matchmark Disconnect the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering intermediate shaft.
  8. REMOVE UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY Refer to REMOVAL
  9. REMOVE LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 3
  10. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING Remove the return spring.
  11. REMOVE STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 1
  12. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors and detach the wire harness clamps from the power steering ECU assembly. Detach the wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and steering column assembly. NOTE: Do not release the tilt lever when the steering column assembly is not installed on the vehicle. Do not drop or strike the steering column assembly. If dropped or struck, replace it with a new one.
  13. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Remove the bolt. NOTE: Do not remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly. Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering column assembly. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Matchmark Remove the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.

  7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Matchmark Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly. SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05031 TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Turn *2 Hold NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use.

  1. REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL MAIN SWITCH (w/ Cruise Control System) . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 5
  2. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH LH Refer to step 7
  3. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Remove the 2 screws. Detach the claw and guide and remove the steering wheel ornament.
  4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ORNAMENT Remove the screw. Detach the 2 guides and remove the steering wheel ornament.
  5. REMOVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT SWITCH ASSEMBLY (w/ Shift Paddle Switch) . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  6. REMOVE LOWER STEERING WHEEL BOSS COVER Detach the 4 claws and remove the lower steering wheel boss cover.

INSTALLATION

  1. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut. Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) Connect the connectors to the spiral cable sub-assembly.
  2. INSTALL STEERING PAD . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  3. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 2
  4. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER (w/ Cruise Control System) . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 3
  5. INSTALL LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 4
  6. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
  7. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to INITIALIZATION .
  8. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM

  7. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH LH Disconnect the connector from the spiral cable. w/ Shift Paddle Switch: Disconnect the connector from the No. 1 switch wire (shift paddle switch). Remove the 2 screws. Detach the claw and guide and remove the steering pad switch.

  1. INSPECT STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.   1. INSTALL STEERING PAD SWITCH LH Attach the claw and guide to install the steering pad switch. Install the 2 screws. w/ Shift Paddle Switch: Connect the connector to the No. 1 switch wire (shift paddle switch). Connect the connector to the spiral cable sub-assembly.
  2. INSTALL STEERING PAD . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 1
  3. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 2
  4. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER (w/ Cruise Control System) . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 3
  5. INSTALL LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 4
  6. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
