  1. PRECAUTION Before working on the fuel system, disconnect the battery negative terminal. Do not work on the fuel system near fire. Never smoke during the work. Keep rubber and leather parts away from gasoline.
  2. DISCHARGE FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE CAUTION: Before removing fuel system parts, take precautions to prevent gasoline spillage. As some pressure remains in the fuel line even after taking precautions to prevent gasoline spillage, use a shop rag to prevent gasoline splashes when disconnecting the fuel line. Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove the rear seat cushion (See «OVERHAUL»(ref-224793-S13116922602006031100000) ). Remove the butyl tape, then remove the rear service hole cover. Disconnect the fuel pump connector. Connect the battery negative terminal. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf) Start the engine. Turn the ignition switch to OFF after the engine stops. HINT: DTC P0171 (system to lean) may be present. Crank the engine again, then check that the engine does not start. Remove the fuel tank cap, then discharge the pressure in the fuel tank completely. Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Connect the fuel pump connector. Attach new butyl tape to the rear service hole cover. Install the rear service hole cover, making sure it is aligned with the 2 convex of the floor panel. Install the rear seat cushion (See «OVERHAUL»(ref-224793-S13116922602006031100000) ). Connect the battery negative terminal. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf)
  3. FUEL SYSTEM When disconnecting the high-pressure fuel line, a large amount of gasoline will splash. So take the following precautions. Discharge the fuel system pressure (step 2 ). Disconnect the fuel pump tube (See «Removal & Installation and Disassembly & Reassembly»(ref-224766-S14797463712006031100000) ). Drain the pressure remaining in the fuel tank main tube. Cover the disconnected fuel tank main tube (fuel tube joint and fuel tube connector) with a vinyl bag to prevent damage and the intrusion of foreign objects. Do not reuse the O-ring. Do not damage a new O-ring when installing it into the fuel injector. Before installing a new O-ring, apply gasoline or spindle oil. NOTE: Do not use engine oil, gear oil or brake oil. Install the fuel injector into the fuel delivery pipe and cylinder head as illustrated in (Scheme 105). NOTE: Apply gasoline or spindle oil to the contact surface of the fuel delivery pipe and fuel injector before installing the fuel injector. Take the following precautions when removing the fuel tube connector (metallic type). HINT: The structure of the fuel tube connector is (Scheme 106) Check the fuel tube connector and pipe for dirt and mud before removing the fuel tube connector. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Hold the fuel tube connector in your hand, then install SST. SST 09268-21010 NOTE: Perform this work with SST. Do not use any other tools. Turn SST to align the retainer inside the fuel tube connector with the chamfered part of SST. Insert SST into the fuel tube connector. Hold SST in the position above, then push the fuel tube connector towards the SST side. Mount the retainer of the fuel tube connector onto the chamfered part of SST. HINT: The retainer of the fuel tube connector is unlocked. Slide SST and the fuel tube connector together towards the fuel tube until they make a "click" sound, then disconnect the fuel tube. After removing the fuel tube, check the sealing surface of the pipe for dirt and mud. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Cover the disconnected fuel tube connector and pipe with a vinyl bag to prevent damage and the intrusion of foreign objects. Take the following precautions when installing the fuel tube connector (metallic type). Align the fuel tube connector with the pipe, then push in the fuel tube connector until the retainer makes a "click" sound. After connecting the fuel tube connector, check that the fuel tube connector and pipe are securely connected by pulling them. Take the following precautions when removing the fuel tube connector (type A). HINT: The structure of the fuel tube connector is (Scheme 112) Check the fuel tube connector and pipe for dirt and mud before removing the fuel tube connector. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Pinch the retainer as illustrated in (Scheme 113), then pull the fuel tube connector out of the pipe. If the fuel tube connector and pipe are stuck, pinch the pipe, then push and pull the fuel tube connector to release and disconnect the fuel tube connector. NOTE: Never use any tools. After removing the fuel tube, check the sealing surface of the pipe for dirt and mud. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Cover the disconnected fuel tube connector and pipe with a vinyl bag to prevent damage and the intrusion of foreign objects. Take the following precautions when installing the fuel tube connector (type A). Align the fuel tube connector with the pipe, then push in the fuel tube connector until the retainer makes a "click" sound. After connecting the fuel tube connector, check that the fuel tube connector and pipe are securely connected by pulling them. Take the following precautions when removing the fuel tube connector (type B). HINT: The structure of the fuel tube connector is (Scheme 118) Check the fuel tube connector and pipe for dirt and mud before removing the fuel tube connector. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Pinch the tab of the retainer of the fuel tube connector to remove the lock claws and push it down (Scheme 119) Pull the fuel tank main tube out of the pipe. If the fuel tube connector and pipe are stuck, pinch the pipe, then push and pull the fuel tube connector to release and disconnect the fuel tube connector. NOTE: Never use any tools. After removing the fuel tube, check the sealing surface of the pipe for dirt and mud. If dirty, wipe it with a shop rag. Cover the disconnected fuel tube connector and pipe with a vinyl bag to prevent damage and intrusion of foreign objects. Take the following precautions when installing the fuel tube connector (type B). Align the fuel tube connector with the pipe, then push in the fuel tube connector until it comes into contact with the seat, then push the retainer up until the claws lock. After connecting the fuel tube connector, check that the fuel tube connector and pipe are securely connected by pulling them.
  4. CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKS Check that there are no fuel leaks after doing maintenance on the fuel system (See «FUEL - FUEL SYSTEM (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224766-S02956210462006031100000) ).

  1. CHECK FUEL PRESSURE Prepare for the inspection. Prepare a new fuel tube. HINT: Part No. 23901-28290 Using a cutter knife, cut the fuel tube protector as illustrated in (Scheme 124). Tear the protector by hand, then remove the fuel tube connector. NOTE: If the protector is cut too deeply with the cutter, the O-ring of the fuel tube connector will be damaged. Discharge the fuel pressure system (See «FUEL - FUEL SYSTEM (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224766-S02956210462006031100000) ). Using a voltmeter, measure the battery voltage. Standard: 9.0 to 14 V Disconnect the battery negative terminal. Disconnect the fuel tube (See «FUEL - FUEL SYSTEM (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224766-S02956210462006031100000) ). Install SST and the fuel tube connector into the vehicle. SST 09268-41047 (95336-08070), 09268-45014 (09268-41200, 09268-41220, 09268-41250) Wipe off any spilled gasoline. Connect the battery negative terminal. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf) Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the hand-held tester ON. Select the menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / FUEL PUMP / SPD. Measure the fuel pressure. Standard: 304 to 343 kPa (3.1 to 3.5 kgf/cm 2, 44 to 50 psi) If the fuel pressure is greater than the standard value, replace the fuel pump. If the fuel pressure is less than the standard value, check the connection between the fuel hose and fuel pump. Disconnect the hand-held tester from the DLC3. Start the engine. Measure the fuel pressure while the engine idles. Standard: 304 to 343 kPa (3.1 to 3.5 kgf/cm 2, 44 to 50 psi) Stop the engine. After stopping the engine, check that the fuel pressure does not change for 5 minutes. Standard: 147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm 2, 21 psi) or more If the fuel pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump and fuel injector (See «INSPECTION»(ref-224766-S21839242792006031100000) ). After measuring the fuel pressure, disconnect the battery negative terminal. Remove SST and the fuel tube connector while being careful to prevent gasoline splashes. Connect the fuel tube (See «FUEL - FUEL SYSTEM (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224766-S02956210462006031100000) ).
  2. CHECK FUEL PUMP Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the hand-held tester ON. NOTE: Do not start the engine. Select the menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / FUEL PUMP / SPD. Check the fuel operation by operating it with the hand-held tester. If the fuel pump does not operate, replace the fuel pump.
  3. CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKS Check that there are no leaks in the fuel system while fuel pressure is applied.

  1. INSPECT FUEL INJECTOR ASSY Check the resistance. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard: TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION Tester Connection Specified Condition 1 - 2 11.6 to 12.4 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector. Check the injection volume. NOTE: Perform the test in a well-ventilated area and watch out for flames. Handle the fuel tube connector carefully. Prepare a new fuel tube. HINT: Part No. 23901-28290 Using a cutter knife, cut the fuel tube protector as illustrated in (Scheme 129). Tear the protector by hand, then remove the fuel tube connector. NOTE: If the protector is cut too deeply with the cutter, the O-ring of the fuel tube connector will be damaged. Install the fuel tube connector into SST, then connect the fuel tube connector to the fuel pipe (the vehicle side). SST 09268-41047 (95336-08070) Install a new O-ring onto the fuel injector. Install SST and the vinyl tube onto the fuel injector. SST 09268-41047 (09268-41110, 09268-41300) Set the fuel injector in a graduated cylinder. Actuate the fuel pump (See «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION»(ref-224766-S05185139542006031100000) ). Install SST onto the fuel injector. SST 09842-30080 Connect SST to the battery, then measure the injection volume for 15 seconds. Perform the inspection 2 or 3 times, then calculate the average. Standard: INJECTION VOLUME SPECIFICATIONS Injection Volume Difference between each fuel injector 76 to 92 cm 3 (4.6 to 5.6 cu in.) per 15 seconds 16 cm 3 (1.0 cu in.) or less NOTE: Always do the switching at the battery side. If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector. Check the leakage. When inspecting the injection volume, remove SST from the battery. Inspect the fuel leakage from the fuel injector. Standard: 1 drop or less every 12 minutes If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel injector.
  2. INSPECT FUEL PUMP Check the resistance. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard: TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION Tester Connection Specified Condition 1 (+) - 2 (-) 0.2 to 3.0 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the result is not as specified, replace the fuel pump. Check the operation. Check that the motor operates when battery voltage is applied across the terminals. NOTE: Perform the check quickly (for less than 10 seconds). Keep the battery as far away from the fuel pump as possible. Always do the switching at the battery side. If the motor does not operate, replace the fuel pump.
