  6. INSPECT FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT HINT: You do not need to check the belt deflection because the auto tensioner has been adopted.
  7. CHECK IGNITION TIMING NOTE: Turn all the electrical systems and the A/C OFF. Inspect the ignition timing with the cooling fan OFF. When checking the ignition timing, shift the transmission to the neutral position. Warm up and stop the engine. When using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool: Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / IGN ADVANCE. HINT: Refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further information regarding the selection of Data List. Inspect the ignition timing during idling. Ignition timing: 5 to 15° BTDC Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3. When not using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool: Remove the engine cover No. 1 (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-224768-S11554739982006031100000) ). Pull out the wire harness as shown in the illustration. Connect the clip of the timing light to the engine. NOTE: Use a timing light that detects the first signal. After checking, be sure to wrap the wire harness with tape. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3. SST 09843-18040 NOTE: Make sure of the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting the wrong terminals can damage the engine. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Inspect the ignition timing during idling. Ignition timing: 8 to 12° BTDC HINT: Run the engine speed at 1,000 to 1,300 RPM for 5 seconds, then check that the engine speed returns to the idling speed. Disconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3. Inspect the ignition timing during idling. Ignition timing: 5 to 15° BTDC Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Remove the timing light. Reinstall the engine cover No. 1 (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-224768-S11554739982006031100000) ).
  8. INSPECT ENGINE IDLING SPEED NOTE: Turn all the electrical systems and the A/C OFF. Inspect the engine idling speed with the cooling fan OFF. When checking the idling speed, shift the transmission to the neutral position. Warm up and stop the engine. When using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool: Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY/ENGINE SPD. HINT: Refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further information regarding the selection of Data List. Inspect the engine idling speed. Idle speed: 610 to 710 RPM for automatic transaxle 650 to 750 RPM for manual transaxle Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool from the DLC3. When not using the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool: Install SST to terminal 9 (TAC) of DLC3, then connect a tachometer. SST 09843-18030 NOTE: Make sure of the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting the wrong terminals can damage the engine. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Inspect the engine idling speed. Idle speed: 610 to 710 RPM for automatic transaxle 650 to 750 RPM for manual transaxle Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Disconnect a tachometer. Remove SST from terminal 9 (TAC).
  9. INSPECT COMPRESSION Warm up and stop the engine. Remove the engine cover No. 1 (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-224768-S11554739982006031100000) ). Remove the 4 ignition coils (See «IGNITION COIL ASSY (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224772-S39140322102006031100000) ). Remove the 4 spark plugs. Disconnect the 4 fuel injector connectors. Inspect cylinder compression pressure. Insert a compression gauge into the spark plug hole. SST 09992-00500 Fully open the throttle. While cranking the engine, measure the compression pressure. Compression pressure 1,300 kPa (13.3 kgf/cm 2,189 psi) Minimum pressure: 1,000 kPa (10.2 kgf/cm 2,145 psi) Difference between each cylinder: 100 kPa (1.0 kgf/cm 2,14 psi) NOTE: Use a fully-charged battery so the engine speed can be increased to 250 RPM or more. Inspect the other cylinders in the same way. Measure the compression in as short a time possible. If the cylinder compression is low, pour a light coat of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, then inspect it again. HINT: If adding oil increases the compression, the piston rings and/or cylinder bore may be worn or damaged. If the pressure stays low, the valve may be stuck or seated improperly, or there may be leakage from the gasket. Connect the 4 fuel injector connectors. Install the 4 spark plugs. Torque: 19 N.m (194 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf) Install the 4 ignition coils (See «IGNITION COIL ASSY (2AZ-FE)»(ref-224772-S39140322102006031100000) ). Install the engine cover No. 1 (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-224768-S11554739982006031100000) ).
  10. INSPECT CO/HC HINT: The ECM properly controls the CO/HC concentration in the emission gas. Start the engine. Run the engine at 2,500 RPM for approximately 180 seconds. Insert the CO/HC meter testing probe at least 40 cm (1.3 ft) into the tailpipe while idling. Check the CO/HC concentration while idling and/or at 2,500 RPM. If the CO/HC concentration does not comply with the regulations, troubleshoot in the order given below. Check the heated oxygen sensor operation (See «DTC P0136, P0137, P0138: OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION, LOW VOLTAGE & HIGH VOLTAGE (BANK 1 SENSOR 2)»(/scion/tc/i-2004-2007/remont/testing-diagnostics/#sfi-system-2az-fe) ). See the table below for possible causes, then inspect the applicable parts and repair them if necessary.

Scheme 8: REPLACEMENT
  1. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-224772-S06982846242006031100000) )
  2. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT Using SST, loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then remove the fan and generator V belt. SST 09249-63010 NOTE: Be sure to connect SST and the tools so that they are inline when using. When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly in 3 second or more. Be sure to not apply force rapidly. After the tensioner is retracted all the way, do not apply force any more than necessary.
  3. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT Using SST, loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then install the fan and generator V belt. SST 09249-63010 NOTE: Be sure to connect SST and the tools so that they are inline when using. When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly in 3 second or more. Be sure to not apply force rapidly. After the tensioner is retracted all the way, do not apply force any more than necessary.
