REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGSee SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM before attempting any repairs to steering column or components.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal

Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS . Remove and discard 4 air bag module screws from behind steering wheel. Pull air bag module outward from steering wheel, and disconnect electrical connectors from rear of module. Remove module and set aside with trim cover facing upward.

Installation

Connect electrical connectors to module. Install module using 4 new mounting screws. Tighten screws to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). Activate SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .

  1. Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-1266-S07415585192000031300000).
  2. Remove air bag module. See «AIR BAG (INFLATOR) MODULE»(ref-1266-S08672871362000031300000). Disconnect horn switch connector and cruise control switch connector (if equipped).
  3. Remove and discard steering wheel nut. Using Steering Wheel Puller (J-1859-03), remove steering wheel. DO NOT install puller bolts too deeply into center hub, as SIR coil assembly will be damaged. see scheme 1
  4. After steering wheel is removed, prevent coil assembly from rotating by inserting Yellow tab (if available) into coil assembly, or tape coil assembly in place.
  1. Ensure front wheels are straight ahead. Remove Yellow tab or tape from coil assembly. Install steering wheel to steering shaft. Steering wheel and steering shaft have locating notches or flats, allowing steering wheel to be installed in one position only.
  2. Tighten new steering wheel nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m). To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Activate SIR system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1266-S42248296152000031300000) .
  1. Set front wheels in straight-ahead position and turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-1266-S07415585192000031300000). Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See «AIR BAG (INFLATOR) MODULE»(ref-1266-S08672871362000031300000) and «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-1266-S02219903622000031300000).
  2. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. see scheme 1 Remove ignition lock bezel. Remove screws from lever control switch. Disconnect SIR coil assembly electrical connector. To prevent coil assembly from rotating, insert Yellow tab (if available) into coil assembly, or securely tape coil assembly in present position. Remove coil assembly from shaft.
  1. Route coil wiring down through column, and install coil to lever control switch. If installing original coil, remove tape from coil assembly before installing steering wheel.
  2. New SIR coil assembly is pre-centered and held in center position by Yellow tab. Remove Yellow tab, after steering wheel is installed, by pulling tab out through opening in steering wheel. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Activate SIR system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(ref-1266-S42248296152000031300000) .

Lever control switch is attached to top of steering column. (Scheme 2) Remove SIR coil assembly. See SIR COIL ASSEMBLY. Remove bolt securing lever control switch to column. Disconnect harness connectors. Slide lever control switch off column. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove steering column upper shroud. Insert ignition key, and rotate lock cylinder to ACC position. Depress square locking button on top of ignition module assembly, and slide lock cylinder assembly from ignition module housing. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Ignition switch is attached to lock cylinder with 2 screws. (Scheme 2)and (Scheme 3). Remove upper and lower column shrouds. see scheme 1 Remove lock cylinder trim bezel ring. Disconnect ignition switch connector. Remove 2 retaining screws and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(ref-1266-S07415585192000031300000). Set front wheels in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove air bag module and steering wheel. See «AIR BAG (INFLATOR) MODULE»(ref-1266-S08672871362000031300000) and «STEERING WHEEL»(ref-1266-S02219903622000031300000).
  2. Remove upper column shroud, lock cylinder bezel and lower column shroud. see scheme 1 Remove Data Link Connector (DLC) screws. Disconnect hood release cable. Pull left and right side panels outward at bottom to disconnect Velcro, then pull outward at top to disengage 2 snaps. Remove SIR coil assembly. See «SIR COIL ASSEMBLY»(ref-1266-S11915608492000031300000).
  3. Disconnect lever control switch connectors. Remove lever control switch (if necessary). See «LEVER CONTROL SWITCH ASSEMBLY»(ref-1266-S23789363492000031300000). Disconnect ignition switch connector. Remove ignition switch (if necessary). See «IGNITION SWITCH»(ref-1266-S22215837682000031300000). Remove upper pinch bolt from intermediate shaft. Remove column mounting bolts. Remove steering column. To install, reverse removal procedure.
