BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH

Blower motor switch has 5 positions which control 4 blower motor speeds. Switch positions are OFF, I (low), II (medium-low), III (medium-high) and IIII (high).

MODE SELECTOR

Mode control selector lever, through Black cable, controls air flow. Air flow can be directed to vent (instrument panel), bi-level (instrument panel and heater), floor (heater), mix (windshield and heater), and defrost (windshield) positions as desired.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL SELECTOR

Temperature control selector lever, through White cable, controls discharged air temperature in all mode positions. Full hot (Red) position directs air through heater core. Full cold (Blue) position directs air past heater core, providing unheated air.

BLOWER MOTOR INOPERATIVE

  1. Turn ignition off. Ensure HVAC (15-amp) fuse, located in instrument panel junction block, is okay. Turn ignition on. Turn blower motor switch to medium-high position. Check for voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal "E1" (Dark Blue wire). If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, go to step 5 .
  2. Check for voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal F2 (Purple wire). If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, replace blower relay located in instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation. If blower motor does not operate, replace instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation.
  3. Check for voltage between ground and blower motor connector terminal "B" (Purple wire). If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, repair open in Purple wire between instrument panel and blower motor. Recheck blower motor operation.
  4. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and blower motor connector terminal "A" (Black wire). If continuity is present, replace blower motor. If continuity is not present, repair open in Black wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-246-S38577231862000030800000) . Recheck blower motor operation.
  5. Ensure ignition is on and blower motor switch is set to medium-high position. Check for voltage between ground and blower motor resistor connector terminal "C" (Dark Blue wire). If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, repair open in Dark Blue wire. Recheck blower motor operation.
  6. Check for voltage between ground and blower resistor connector terminal "A" (Light Blue wire) located on top of heater case, under defroster duct. If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, replace blower resistor.
  7. Check for voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal C10 (Brown wire). If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, replace instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation.
  8. Check for voltage between ground and blower switch 6-pin connector terminal "C" (Brown wire). If voltage is present, replace blower switch. Recheck blower motor operation. If voltage is not present, repair open in Brown wire. Recheck blower motor operation.

BLOWER MOTOR OPERATES AT ALL SPEEDS, WITH IGNITION OFF

  1. Turn ignition switch off. Remove IGN3 (30-amp) fuse located in underhood junction block. If blower motor continues to operate, go to next step. If blower motor does not operate, replace ignition switch. Recheck blower motor operation.
  2. Disconnect instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector. Check voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block 68-pin connector terminal F9 (Orange wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to battery voltage in Orange wire between instrument panel junction block and ignition switch. Recheck blower motor operation.
  3. Check for voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal C10 (Brown wire). If battery voltage is present, replace instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation. If battery voltage is not present, repair short to battery voltage in Brown wire between instrument panel junction block and blower switch. Recheck blower motor operation.

BLOWER MOTOR OPERATES AT HIGH SPEED ONLY, WITH IGNITION OFF

Turn ignition off. Check for voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal F1 (Orange wire). If battery voltage is present, repair short to battery voltage in Orange wire. Recheck blower motor operation. If battery voltage is not present, replace blower motor relay. Recheck blower motor operation. If blower motor continues to operate at high speed, replace instrument panel junction block.

BLOWER MOTOR OPERATES IN HIGH SPEED WHEN BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH IS ACTIVATED

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor switch 6-pin connector. Check for short (continuity of less than one ohm) between blower motor switch terminal "A" (Orange wire) and terminals "E" (Yellow wire), "D" (Tan wire) and "B" (Light Blue wire). If continuity exists (short), replace blower motor switch. Recheck blower motor operation.
  2. If continuity does not exist (no short) between switch terminals, repair short between Orange wire and Yellow wire, or Tan wire, or Light Blue wire, or Dark Blue wire between blower motor switch and blower motor resistor. Recheck blower motor operation.

BLOWER MOTOR OPERATES IN HIGH SPEED, BUT NOT IN ONE OR MORE OF OTHER SPEEDS

  1. Turn ignition on. Check operation of blower motor and verify inoperative speed(s). Turn blower motor speed switch to inoperative blower speed. Check voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal E1 (Dark Blue wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, replace blower resistor. Recheck blower motor operation. If blower motor operation is still not correct, replace instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation.
  2. Check voltage between ground and blower motor resistor connector terminal "C" (Dark Blue wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair open in Dark Blue wire. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-246-S38577231862000030800000) . Recheck blower motor operation.
  3. Ensure ignition is on. Turn blower motor switch to suspect blower speed(s). Check voltage at suspect blower motor resistor terminal(s). See «BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(ref-246-S04914625032000030800000) table. If battery voltage is not present at all suspect speeds, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, replace blower motor resistor. Recheck blower motor operation.
  4. Ensure ignition is on. Turn blower motor switch to suspect blower speed(s). Check voltage at suspect blower motor switch terminal(s). See «BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION»(ref-246-S23020200812000030800000) table. If battery voltage is not present, replace blower motor switch. If battery voltage is present, repair open in suspect wire between blower motor switch and blower motor resistor. Recheck blower motor operation.

BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION

BLOWER MOTOR OPERATES IN ALL SPEEDS EXCEPT HIGH SPEED

  1. Turn ignition off. Replace blower motor relay. Turn blower motor switch to high position. Turn ignition on. If blower motor does not operate in high position, go to next step. If blower motor operates in high position, check operation in all blower motor speeds.
  2. Turn ignition off. Reinstall original blower motor relay. Turn ignition on. Turn blower motor switch to high position. Check voltage between ground and blower motor switch terminal "A" (Orange wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, replace blower motor switch. Recheck blower motor operation.
  3. Turn ignition on. Turn blower motor switch to high position. Check voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal F1 (Orange wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, repair open in Orange wire. Recheck blower motor operation.
  4. Turn ignition on. Turn blower motor switch to high position. Check voltage between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal D1 (Red wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Red wire. Recheck blower motor operation.
  5. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and instrument panel junction block Black 68-pin connector terminal A1(Black wire). If continuity is present, replace instrument panel junction block. Recheck blower motor operation. If continuity is not present, repair open in Black wire. Recheck blower motor operation.

BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR

Note. When removing upper trim panel use care not to damage VIN plate or upper trim panel seal.
