CHIME SYSTEM
The chime system provides audible warnings for an unbuckled lap belt, key in ignition reminder and a lights on reminder. For information on the seat belt reminder see AUTOMATIC SEAT BELTS article in the RESTRAINTS.
The chime sound consists of repetitive pulses of a 1000 Hz tone. The amplitude of each pulse decays gradually, as opposed to an abrupt beeping sound. The following repetition rates distinguish the various reminders.
- Seat Belt 40 cycles per minute.
- Key In 120 cycles per minute.
- Lights On 180 cycles per minute.
The chime module for the up-level vehicles also provides a delayed dome lamp turnoff feature.
The chime module consists of a chime module (located in the instrument panel junction block), a door jamb switch and an ignition switch with a key alarm switch.
Power to the chime system is supplied at all times.
Key Minder Audible
The chime module provides an audible warning if the key is in the ignition and conditions outlined in the following chart are present. The key minder audible does not occur if the drivers door is closed. The following table assumes the drivers door is open , the key is inserted into the ignition and the ignition switch is moved through the positions in the order shown. See KEY MINDER AUDIBLE table.

KEY MINDER AUDIBLE
Key In Lock Position Audible
The chime module provides a delay so when the ignition switch is moved through the ACC position during normal starting of the vehicle, and the drivers door is open, no audible chime occurs.
The key minder warning is provided on exit, not on entry, if the key is in the lock position. This enables the driver to enter the vehicle, insert the key in the ignition switch before closing the drivers door and not hear the audible warning.
Lights On Minder Audible
The chime module provides an audible warning if the park lamps or headlamps are on, the drivers door is open and one of two conditions exist: The key is out of the ignition switch, or the key is in the ignition at the lock position and has not been turned. If a condition exists calling for the key minder audible warning and the lights on minder audible warning, the key minder audible warning takes priority.
Door Jamb Switch
The door jamb switch is a plunger type switch mounted in the B-pillar. When the drivers door is opened beyond a prescribed distance, the switch contacts close signalling to the chime module that the door is open.
Ignition & Key Alarm Switch Assembly
The key minder circuit is a set of contacts which are activated by the ignition module mechanical driver. Closing this circuit pulls the chime module and passive restraint control module inputs to ground. The ground circuit is provided by a wire ground to the switch.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating suspected system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary.

Circuit 153C
This circuit connects the instrument panel junction block connector cavity A5 to instrument panel ground splice pack cavity "A". Circuit 153C is a Black 22 gauge wire. Circuit 153C is the ground circuit for the chime module. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 159B/155P
Circuit 159B/155P is the ground circuit for the chime module through the drivers door jamb switch. The module is grounded when the door is open.
Circuit 159B
This circuit connects the instrument panel junction block connector cavity D3 to the drivers door jamb switch connector cavity "A". Circuit 159B is a Tan 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 155P
This circuit connects the drivers door jamb switch connector cavity "B" to left body ground splice pack cavity "G". Circuit 155P is a Black 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 80/80A
This is the ground wire for the chime module through the key minder switch. The module is grounded when the key is in the ignition, and the key has been turned.
Circuit 80
This circuit connects the instrument panel junction block connector cavity E1 to ignition switch connector cavity "B". Circuit 80 is a Light Green 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 80A
This circuit connects the ignition switch connector cavity "B" to Passive Restraint Control Module (PRCM) connector cavity "A" (through instrument panel body inline cavity "B"). Circuit 80A is a Light Green 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 1238
This circuit is the ground wire for the chime module through the Passive Restraint Control Module (PRCM). Circuit 1238 connects the instrument panel junction block connector cavity D2 to PRCM connector cavity "B". Circuit 1238 is a Black 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 1932
This circuit supplies battery voltage to the chime module in the instrument panel junction block through the ignition switch. Circuit 1932 connects underhood junction block connector cavity "C" to ignition switch connector cavity "A". Circuit 1932 is a Red/White 14 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 3A
This circuit supplies battery voltage to the chime module in the instrument panel junction block. Circuit 3A connects ignition switch connector cavity "D" to instrument panel junction block connector cavity D8. Circuit 3A is Pink 14 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 1936
Circuit 1936 connects underhood junction block connector cavity "A" to instrument panel junction block connector cavity F6. Circuit 1936 is a Red/White 14 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
Circuit 9K
Circuit 9K connects instrument panel junction block connector cavity F5 to headlamp switch connector cavity "K". Circuit 9K is a Brown 22 gauge wire. Check for Opens/Shorts. Repair as needed. If this circuit is good, go to the next item indicated.
COMPONENT TESTS
There are 3 separate chimes differing in frequency of chimes. The headlamp chime is the fast chime. The key minder chime is the medium chime. The occupant restraint (passive restraint as well as lapbelt) chime is the slow chime.
BATTERY
Check battery state of charge.
CHIME/DELAYED DOME LAMP MODULE
The chime/delayed dome lamp module plugs into the back of the instrument panel junction block. Remove access panel on drivers side of instrument panel junction block.
Check the condition of the pins on the chime module and the junction block. Straighten any bent pins. The chime module is not repairable. If the other components of the system operate normally install a new chime module. If the problem is corrected, reinstall the old chime module to verify the problem is in the chime module.
DRIVERS DOOR JAMB SWITCH
Check switch resistance. Switch resistance is open with door closed. Switch resistance is less than one ohm with door open. Repair as needed. If this component is good, go to the next item indicated.
IP BATT Fuse
This fuse is a 30A Maxifuse located in the underhood junction block. The window fuse feeds Circuit 1936. If one of the following systems is operating normally, the fuse is most likely good
- Headlamp switch.
- Dome lamp.
- Remote mirror switch.
- Map lights.
- Power door lock relay.
- Radio.
If the fuse is blown, determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair. Replace fuse as needed. If the component is good, go to the next item indicated.
IGN 4 Fuse
This fuse is a 30A Maxifuse located in the underhood junction block. The window fuse feeds Circuit 1932. If one of the following systems is operating normally the fuse is most likely good
- Brake lights.
- Back up lights.
- Radio.
- Wiper/washer motor.
If the fuse is blown determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair. Replace fuse as needed. If the component is good, go to the next item indicated.
Chime Fuse
This fuse is a 5A Minifuse located in the instrument panel junction block. The chime fuse feeds Circuit 440. If one of the following systems is operating normally, the fuse is most likely good
- Drivers door key cylinder switch.
- Chime module.
- Right front door lock switch.
- Left front door lock switch.
- Radio.
If the fuse is blown, determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair. Replace fuse as needed. If the component is good, go to the next item indicated.
IGN1
This fuse is a 10A Minifuse located in the instrument panel junction block. The IGN1 fuse feeds circuit 39 to the instrument panel junction block directly to the chime module.
This is the switched ignition input to the chime module. This circuit should have battery voltage with the ignition switch in run or crank. If this fuse is blown, determine the cause of the blown fuse and repair. Replace fuse if needed. If this component is good, go to the next item indicated.
HEADLAMP CHIME
With the ignition OFF and the drivers door open, turn the headlamp switch to headlamps ON. The headlamp chime (fast chime) should come on and turn off when the door is closed.
HEADLAMP SWITCH

KEY MINDER CHIME
If the drivers door is open, and the key has been inserted in the ignition, rotated to ACCESSORY and back to LOCK, the key minder chime (medium chime) should come on and turn off when the door is closed.
KEY MINDER SWITCH (INSIDE IGNITION SWITCH)
Check switch resistance, cavity "B" (Blue connector) to cavity "C" (Gray connector). Switch resistance is open with key out less than one ohm with key in, once key has been turned to ACC. Repair as needed. If this component, is good go to the next item indicated.
OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CHIME
Turn the ignition to RUN. With either the drivers passive restraint or drivers lapbelt, or both, unbuckled, once the drivers shoulder belt slider gets to the B-pillar, the occupant restraint chime (slow chime) should turn on.
With the drivers occupant restraint buckled, turn the ignition to RUN. There should be no occupant restraint chime.

Removal
- Remove drivers side close out panel, to expose instrument panel junction block.
- Press lock tab on chime module to release connector from instrument panel chime module. (Scheme 2)
- Carefully pull out chime module.
Installation
- Carefully plug the chime module into the instrument panel junction block until it locks into place.
- Install drivers side close out panel.
