DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Fan for A/C is 11.6" (290 mm) in diameter with 5 unequally spaced blades to provide airflow through radiator/condenser.
Fan is driven by an electric motor attached to radiator support. Fan motor is activated by a coolant temperature switch. Vehicles with A/C are equipped with a second switch which can activate circuit.
Non-A/C vehicles use a fan with 4 blades which are unevenly spaced and have curled tips to provide minimum noise. A fan shroud is used on both A/C and non-A/C vehicles to prevent recirculation of air around fan.
COOLING FAN INOPERATIVE
- Ensure 30-amp Cooling Fan fuse is okay. If fuse is okay, disconnect cooling fan motor connector. Connect DVOM from connector terminal "B" to ground. Start engine and turn A/C on.
- If voltage is present at cooling fan connector terminal "B", turn engine off. With an ohmmeter, check for an open in Black wire from fan motor connector terminal "A" to ground. (Scheme 1) If circuit is open, locate and repair open in Black wire. If circuit is not open, replace cooling fan motor. Test cooling fan operation.
- If voltage is not present at cooling fan terminal "B", turn engine off. With DVOM still connected from cooling fan connector terminal "B" to ground, disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Connect a jumper wire between PCM connector terminal and ground. If voltage is present at "B", replace PCM and test cooling fan operation. If voltage is not present at terminal "B", replace cooling fan relay and test cooling fan operation.
COOLING FAN OPERATES CONSTANTLY
| WARNING | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cooling fan relay. Connect negative battery cable. If fan still operates, repair short in Black/Pink wire from underhood junction block to cooling fan motor. (Scheme 1) Test cooling fan operation.
- If cooling fan does not operate, replace cooling fan relay. If fan operates with a new relay, check for a short to ground in the Dark Green/White wire to Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Repair short, if found. If no short is found, replace PCM. Test cooling fan operation.
