Body Control Module (BCM) Replacement and Reprogramming

If the BCM is replaced or requires reprogramming, the following procedures must be performed in the specified order

  1. BCM Setup - Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Body Control Module. Select Setup BCM and follow the on-screen instructions, making sure to select the proper RPOs and input the VIN correctly.
  2. BPP Sensor Calibration - Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/exterior-lights/#lighting-system__brake-pedal-position-sensor-calibration)
  3. Program Key Fobs - Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Programming»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions__remote-control-door-lock-transmitter-programming)
  4. Setup SDM Part Number in BCM - Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Body Control Module. Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM and follow the on-screen instructions.

Communication Interface Module Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

Communication Interface Module Replacement

Note. It is critical to use the service replacement Communication Interface Module (CIM) only in the vehicle for which it was ordered. Failure to perform the following procedures will result in a red LED, DTC(s) being set, and limited or incomplete OnStar® services An OnStar® button-press to the OnStar® call center is not required to complete the procedure. It may take up to 24 hours for OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the procedures. Perform the following procedure only once. Repeat attempts of the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process. To fully activate an OnStar® module, both the setup and activation request procedures must be completed on all vehicles with AND without an active OnStar® subscription to insure the unit has been setup properly for the vehicle it has been installed into and also to update the OnStar® with the correct unit information. To initialize the Turn-by-Turn feature, the vehicle must first be driven 8-16 km (5-10 miles) in order to allow the system to self-calibrate the dead reckoning feature. Use of a J 2534-compatible diagnostic tool interface is required when performing the SPS supported OnStar® Setup and Activation (ONSU) procedure. On vehicles up-fitted with TTY capabilities, it is necessary to perform a power cycle of the OnStar® Interface Module (OTIM), and toggle the TTY mode after completing the CIM installation and setup procedures.

  1. Connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal to the scan tool.
  3. Select the OnStar® Setup and Activation (ONSU) option using the service programming system (SPS).
  4. The default language for the new CIM is English. To change the language to French or Spanish, access the scan tool.
  5. Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated.

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

XM™ Activation

IMPORTANTAfter replacement of an XM™ receiver, call XM™ radio to deactivate the receiver that has been removed from the vehicle. The vehicle must be parked in view of a satellite within 24 hours after an activation call.
  1. Radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 0 and record the radio ID. The radio ID will be required for activation of the new receiver.
  2. Call XM™ radio to deactivate the faulty receiver and activate the new receiver. US: 1-800-556-3600 Canada: 1-877-438-9677
  3. Park the vehicle outside in an area with an unobstructed view of the southern sky.
  4. Leave the vehicle outside with the ignition switch in the ACC position and the radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 1 for 30 minutes to activate XM™ service.
  5. Once activated, the radio will receive the remaining XM™ channels.

EBCM Replacement

If the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

EBCM Reprogramming

If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of the electronic brake control module (EBCM), and the steering wheel position sensor (SWPS) or SWPS diagnostics procedures will require the scan tool steering position sensor calibration procedure for complete repair. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Centering

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

WARNINGReplacement or reprogramming of the ECM, or replacement of the clutch pedal position sensor (CPPS) or clutch pedal requires that a CPPS learn procedure be performed. Failure to perform the CPPS learn procedure may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle or its components if the vehicle is in gear and the starter motor is accidentally engaged.

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed

  1. ECM Reprogramming - Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems) .
  2. Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn - Refer to «Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/manual-trans/#manual-transmission-aisin-ar5__clutch-pedal-position-sensor-learn) .
  3. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Variation Learn for 2.4L engine only - Refer to «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-controls-and-fuel-24l-repair-instructions__crankshaft-position-system-variation-learn) .
  4. ECM Reprogramming

If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Setup for Component Replacement For

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn .

  1. Engine replacement
  2. Any engine repair that disturbs the CKP sensor or it's relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
  3. CKP sensor
  1. If the throttle body is replaced or a throttle body cleaning procedure is completed, the Throttle/Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to the following

Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Replacement and Reprogramming

If the SDM is replaced or requires reprogramming, the following procedures must be performed in the specified order

  1. Setup SDM- Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Supplemental Inflatable Restraint. Select Setup New SDM and follow the on-screen instructions.
  2. Setup SDM Part Number in BCM - Using a scan tool, go to Vehicle Control Systems » Computer/Integrating Systems » Module Setup » Supplemental Inflatable Restraint. Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM and follow the on-screen instructions.

Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Passenger Presence System Preload Test

The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires checking for preloads within each region when the system has been serviced or replaced. If the passenger seat bottom cushion, seat bottom trim, or heater pad has been serviced, reinstalled, or removed for any reason, the procedure below will check for any preloads on the PPS. The PPS module cannot be tested for preload until it is unlocked using SPS programming. A service replacement PPS module does not require an unlock procedure prior to an initial preload test. Once a preload test has been performed, the PPS module will lock regardless of a pass or fail status. If a module needs to be retested, it must first be unlocked with SPS programming. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS, refer to SIR System Description and Operation .

IMPORTANTBefore the PPS can be checked for preloads the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS. When the preload test is perform, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin illuminating at varying intensity. This is normal operation during the preload test procedure and does not indicate additional system faults. The PPS will not function properly if the PPS detects a preload within a region. The Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle must be performed after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

The PPS will fail the preload test when a region has detected a preload/pressure on it. If a preload test fails, the scan tool will display a chart as illustrated below. A Yes status indicates which region(s) have a preload condition. Refer to the chart below and the above illustration to identify the failed region.

Passenger Presence System Preload System Test Procedure (New Module)

  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. With the scan tool, perform the Preload Passenger Presence System procedure.
  3. If the test fails, adjust the seat bottom trim, and massage the cover to ensure unwanted pressure is not present in the specified area. Proceed to the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (Existing Module) to retest after adjustment is made.
  4. Once the test successfully completes, cycle the ignition key OFF.
  5. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures) after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System Preload System Test Procedure (Existing Module)

  1. With «Service Programming System (SPS)»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/communication-devices/#programming-and-setup-all-systems) , unlock the PPS module.
  2. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  3. With the scan tool, perform the Preload Passenger Presence System procedure.
  4. If the test fails, adjust the seat bottom trim, and massage the cover to ensure unwanted pressure is not present in the specified area, and restart the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (Existing Module).
  5. Once the test successfully completes, cycle the ignition key OFF.
  6. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures) after successfully completing the preload test procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Radio Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.

Radio Replacement

If the radio is replaced, the new radio must have radio setup completed using Service Programming System (SPS).

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup

IMPORTANTWhen replacing the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), the tire pressure monitoring (TPM) information can be learned to the new RCDLR in one of two ways. These two methods are reflected in the selections below. Only choose one of the methods; it is not required to do both methods when replacing the RCDLR. If you choose to perform the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure, Step 1 must be performed BEFORE removing the old RCDLR. This procedure requires that specific TPM information be extracted from the old RCDLR prior to its removal.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement-Copy and Paste TPM Information

This procedure will learn the TPM information to the new RCDLR using the Copy and Paste function on the scan tool. The procedure will extract the TPM Tire Type information as well as the sensor data from the existing RCDLR prior to its replacement and store this information in the scan tool. After RCDLR replacement, the tire type and sensor data stored in the scan tool is written to the new RCDLR, negating the need to perform the tire type setup and sensor learn procedure.

This procedure should be considered as the first programming choice when replacing an RCDLR. The Copy and Paste procedure eliminates the possibility of incorrectly inputting the tire type or learning stray TPM sensors.

  1. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure and copy the existing TPM information from the RCDLR using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 1: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 1
  2. At this point, install the new RCDLR.
  3. Using a scan tool, navigate to the Copy and Paste TPM Information procedure to paste the stored TPM information using the outline below. Follow the on-screen instructions after selecting Step 2: Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Copy and Paste TPM Information Step 2
  4. Program the keyless entry transmitters. Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Programming»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions__remote-control-door-lock-transmitter-programming) .
  5. Setup the new RCDLR: Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the scan tool Vehicle Control System menu. Select Setup New RCDLR. Follow the on-sceen instructions.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Replacement-TPM Sensor Learn

This procedure will learn TPM information to the new RCDLR by manually inputting the tire type using the scan tool and performing the TPM sensor learn. This procedure should be performed if the above Copy and Paste procedure can not be completed. An example of this would be an RCDLR that is unable to communicate with the scan tool and is required to be replaced.

  1. Program the keyless entry transmitters. Refer to «Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter Programming»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#keyless-entry-system-and-remote-functions__remote-control-door-lock-transmitter-programming) .
  2. Setup the new RCDLR: Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the scan tool Vehicle Control System menu. Select Setup New RCDLR. Follow the on-sceen instructions.
  3. Tire Type Setup: Install a scan tool. Select Remote Control Door Lock Receiver under Module Setup in the Vehicle Control System menu. Select Tire Type/Pressure Selection. Follow the on-sceen instructions.
  4. Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Learn - Refer to «Tire Pressure Indicator Sensor Learn»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/warning-system/#tire-pressure-monitoring-system) .

Special Tools

EL-49642: SPS Programming Support Tool

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

For step-by-step control module programming instructions, please refer to the scan tool techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

Note. DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the TIS terminal, MDI, and/or Scan Tool, is equipped with the latest software before performing service programming. Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, install EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool to maintain system voltage. See Special Tools . Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. If the above tool is not available, DO NOT connect a battery charger, connect a fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply. Some modules will require additional programming/setup events to be performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi or MDI module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage: There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Interior lights Exterior lights including daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans Radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. SPS prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: Scan Tool The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits MDI The USB, Ethernet or Wireless communication port The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

In the event of an interrupted or unsuccessful programming event, perform the following steps

Programming Procedure

  1. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date.
  2. Attempt to reprogram the control module.
  3. If the control module can still not be programmed, turn the ignition OFF for at least one minute.
  4. Turn the ignition ON and attempt to reprogram the control module. The control module should program. If the control module still cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

After successfully programming the control module, ensure that all post programming procedures are performed; refer to Control Module References for the appropriate control module Programming and Setup document for any required procedures.

Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (N. America except Canada)

Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the theft deterrent module (TDM), the Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the TDM or is otherwise unable to extract this information from the TDM, the vehicle keys must be replaced.

Set Up a Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys

IMPORTANTUse this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. This procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. Performing the setup procedure first allows the scan tool to extract the key information and passwords from the old TDM prior to its removal. Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail.
  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
  4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Prepare Module For TDM Setup Procedure selection.
  5. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
  6. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition".
  7. With a scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  8. Select Step 1.
  9. Select Use Existing Keys.
  10. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. The scan tool will then display Replace Module Per Service Manual. At this time, replace the TDM.
  11. After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2 and follow the on-screen instructions.

Programming Immobilizer System Components

After the TDM has been set up using the above procedure, the ECM and TDM must learn the new fuel continue password. To learn the new password, perform the Immobilizer System Component Programming procedure.

Set Up a Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using New Keys

IMPORTANTUse this procedure only if replacing the TDM using new vehicle keys. The TDM must be replaced prior to beginning this procedure.

With Scan Tool

  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. With a new, unlearned, vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  4. Select Step 1.
  5. Select Use New Keys.
  6. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.

Without Scan Tool

  1. With a new, unlearned, vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the security indicator. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
  5. Start the vehicle. The ECM has learned the fuel continue password.
  6. If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to «Adding Keys»(/saturn/sky/i-final-2010-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#immobilizer-system__adding-keys) .

After the TDM has been set up using one of the above procedure, the ECM and TDM must learn the new fuel continue password. To learn the new password, perform the Immobilizer System Component Programming procedure.

Theft Deterrent Module Programming and Setup (Canada)

Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the theft deterrent module (TDM), the Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the TDM or is otherwise unable to extract this information from the TDM, the vehicle keys must be replaced.

IMPORTANTUse this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. This procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. Performing the setup procedure first allows the scan tool to extract the key information and passwords from the old TDM prior to its removal. Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail.
  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
  4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Legacy Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Prepare Module For TDM Setup Procedure selection.
  5. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
  6. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition".
  7. With a scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  8. Select Step 1.
  9. Select Use Existing Keys.
  10. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. The scan tool will then display Replace Module Per Service Manual. At this time, replace the TDM.
  11. After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2 and follow the on-screen instructions.

After the TDM has been set up using the above procedure, the ECM and TDM must learn the new fuel continue password. To learn the new password, perform the Immobilizer System Component Programming procedure.

IMPORTANTUse this procedure only if replacing the TDM using new vehicle keys. The TDM must be replaced prior to beginning this procedure.
  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
  2. With a new, unlearned, vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, select Theft Deterrent Module in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Setup data list.
  4. Select Step 1.
  5. Select Use New Keys.
  6. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.

After the TDM has been set up using the above procedure, the ECM and TDM must learn the new fuel continue password. To learn the new password, perform the Immobilizer System Component Programming procedure.

Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup

  1. The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
  2. Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
  3. If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
