DESCRIPTION
Steering column collapses upon frontal impact. Steering shaft mounts in 2 needle bearing assemblies in column support. Column support mounts to crossmember under dash. An intermediate shaft, with "U" joints at each end, connects to steering gear.
| CAUTION | Applying excessive pressure, or causing impact to mainshaft during service, may cause the column to collapse. |
Removal
- Remove "U" joint clamp bolt. Remove lower bearing cover and safety padding under dash. Remove combination switch.
- Remove rubber boot at floorboard. Remove column bearing support. Remove column assembly.
Installation
- Connect steering shaft to "U" joint. Make sure clamp bolt fits in shaft groove. Tighten clamp bolt. Install column bearing support.
- Install rubber boot to floorboard. Install combination switch, safety padding and lower bearing cover. Adjust steering wheel as necessary.
Scheme 1
Remove cover under dash. Remove "U" joint clamp bolt. Unbolt column tube from dash. Pull steering shaft from intermediate shaft. Remove grommet. Cut off old bellows.
- Lubricate Bellows Installer Cone (89 95 813) with petroleum jelly. Position cone on "U" joint. Ease new bellows over cone and "U" joint. Install grommet.
- Connect steering shaft to intermediate shaft. Ensure "U" joint clamp bolt fits in shaft groove. Tighten clamp bolt.
- Attach steering column to dash. Check and adjust steering wheel position as necessary. Fit bellows to floorboard. Replace cover under dash.
Disassembly
Remove steering wheel. Pull steering shaft out of tube. Remove rubber bushings with needle bearing assemblies.
Note. Replacement of needle bearing assemblies is the only overhaul procedure.
Reassembly
To reassemble steering column, reverse disassembly procedure.
