DESCRIPTION
Starter is a brush-type, reduction gear electric motor with an overrunning clutch. Some models have permanent magnets in place of field coils. An attached solenoid engages the starter.
CRANKING TEST
Connect starting system tester according to manufacturer's instructions. Operate starter. Starter current should not exceed 315 amps. Voltage should not be less than 9 volts.
CIRCUIT TEST
Ensure voltage at solenoid terminal is at least 7 volts with battery charged and ignition switch in START position. If voltage is less than 7 volts, check wiring between solenoid and ignition switch. Also check neutral safety switch on vehicles with A/T.
STARTER LOAD (LOCK) TEST
Place starter on test bench. Lock starter drive pinion. Energize starter and ensure voltage and amperage are within specification. See STARTER LOAD (LOCK) TEST SPECIFICATIONS table.
