Wiper Washer Systems: Overview Saab 9-5 I

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

Saab 9-5 is equipped with a washer and wiper system for cleaning windshield and headlights. System is controlled with a stalk switch on right side of steering column. Windshield wiper assembly is located under a cover, below windshield. Wiper assembly consists of a motor, linkage system, and 2 wiper arms. Wiper motor has an integrated thermostatic switch which operates when stalk switch is activated and wipers are not in parked position. Thermostatic switch is reset when ignition is off.

Headlight wiper is located under each headlight. Washer fluid reservoir is located in left front of engine compartment. Fluid reservoir consists of reservoir, 2 pumps, and level switch. (Scheme 1)

1. If wipers stop anywhere on windshield, go to step 3. If wipers do not operate at low speed, go to step 4. If wipers do not operate at high speed, go to step 6. If wipers do not work at low speed, high speed or intermittent, go to step 8.
2. If intermittent adjustment does not operate, go to step 11. If wipers do not operate with washers and headlight wipers do not operate, repair open circuit in Yellow wire between control module terminal No. 68 and connector terminal No. 5. After repair, go to step 15. If wipers do not operate with washers or washers do not operate, go to step 14. If wipers, washers or headlight washers do not operate, repair open circuit in Yellow/Black wire between wiper motors and switch. After repair, go to step 15.
3. Remove intermittent wiper relay. (Scheme 2) Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between intermittent wiper relay connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Black wire) and ground. Turn wipers on low speed. If test light comes on when wiper arm is within view on windshield, replace intermittent wiper relay. If test light does not come on when wiper arm is within view on windshield, repair Yellow/Black wire between relay and wiper motor.
4. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Connect jumper wire between switch connector terminals No. 6 (Violet wire) and No. 8 (Green/White wire). (Scheme 3) Turn ignition on. If wipers operate, replace wiper switch. After repair, go to step 15 ). If wipers do not operate, go to next step.
5. Repair open circuit in Green/White wire between wiper motor connector terminal No. 3 and wiper switch connector terminal No. 8. (Scheme 4) Test wiper operation. If wipers operate, system is okay. If wipers do not operate, replace wiper motor. After repair, go to step 15.
6. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Connect a jumper wire between wiper switch connector terminals No. 6 (Violet wire) and No. 7 (Green/Yellow wire). Turn ignition on. If wipers operate, replace wiper switch. After repair, go to step 15. If wipers do not operate, go to next step.
7. Repair open circuit in Green/Yellow between wiper motor and wiper switch. Test wiper operation. If wipers operate, go to step 15. If wipers do not operate, replace wiper motor. After repair, go to step 15.
8. Turn ignition on. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Connect a test light between wiper switch connector terminal No. 6 (Violet wire) and ground. If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair open circuit in Violet wire. After repair, go to step 15.
9. Connect a jumper wire between wiper switch connector terminals No. 6 (Violet wire) and No. 8 (Green/White wire). Test wipers. If wipers operate, replace wiper switch. After repair, go to step 15. If wipers do not operate, go to next step.
10. Connect a test light between battery positive voltage and wiper motor connector terminal No. 1 (Black wire). (Scheme 4) If test light comes on, replace wiper motor. After repair, go to step 15. If test light does not come on, repair open circuit in Black wire between wiper motor and ground. After repair, go to step 15.
11. Disconnect intermittent wiper switch 2-pin connector. Connect test light between battery positive voltage and intermittent wiper switch 2-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Green/Gray wire). (Scheme 5) If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair open circuit in Green/Gray wire. After repair, go to step 15.
12. Connect jumper wire between intermittent wiper switch 2-pin connector terminals. Turn ignition on. Connect Tech 1 scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) to access Dashboard Integrated Central Electronics (DICE). Using scan tool, read front intermittent wiper switch value. If value is about 2, go to next step. If value is not about 2, repair open circuit in Violet/White wire. After repair, go to step 15.
13. Remove jumper wire. Using scan tool, read front intermittent wiper switch value. If value is about 15, replace intermittent wiper switch. After repair, go to step 15. If value is not about 15, repair open circuit in Violet/White wire. After repair, go to step 15.
14. Disconnect wiper switch connector. Connect jumper wire between wiper switch connector terminals No. 5 (Yellow/Black wire) and No. 6 (Violet wire). Turn ignition on. If headlight wipers, windshield wipers and washers operate, replace wiper switch. Go to next step. If wipers and washers do not operate, repair open circuit in wire between wiper motor and switch, then go to next step.
15. Clear DTCs. Perform a functional test of wiper/washer system. Check if DTC reoccurs. If DTC reoccurs, replace DICE control module.
