WHEEL RADIAL & LATERAL RUNOUT

The maximum permissible radial runout and lateral runout of light alloy wheels is .0275" (0.7 mm).
The maximum permissible radial runout and lateral runout of the wheel with the tire mounted is .049" (1.25 mm). Value close to .0197" (0.5 mm) are desirable.
RIDE HEIGHT
Note. Front and rear vehicle ride height is not adjustable.

- Position ready-to-drive vehicle (fuel tank full with spare tire and tool kit installed) on a flat surface. If vehicle is equipped with electronic level control (air suspension), the normal level must be set. See «ADJUSTING CAR TO NORMAL LEVEL (AIR SUSPENSION)»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__adjusting-car-to-normal-level-air) under DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL. Turn the air suspension off during wheel alignment.
- Compress the vehicle at the front and rear by about 0.984" (25 mm), 2-3 times and allow it to spring back freely.
- At the rear axle, measure from wheel contact area to bottom edge of side member suspension subframe (point A). (Scheme 1) Point is at front of drain bore at connection point of control arm to the suspension subframe.
- At the front axle, measure from wheel contact area to bottom edge of side member suspension subframe (point A). (Scheme 2) Point is between camber and caster eccentric.
VARYING STRENGTH SPRING SHIM
Color coded shims are located between the lower part of the spring and the spring seats. This is true of left and right, front and rear axles. The shims are NOT intended for adjusting vehicle height. They are used for compensating for differences in coil spring load groups.
If the differences in wheel load are too large, the arrangement of coil springs (same springs left/right) and shims at the bottom (same shims left/right) must be checked. Only coil springs and shims with the same color coding must be installed at the bottom of the left and right side of vehicle.
Due to varying trim variants (additional equipment), a maximum difference in wheel load of 88.2 lbs. (40 kg) from left to right is permitted per axle. This is partly the result of heavier components compared with standard equipment and partly results from additional components that are asymetrically arranged.
DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL
| CAUTION | Before jacking up vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure electronic level control is disabled (switched off). |
Adjusting Car To Normal Level (Air Suspension)
- If air suspension accumulators of the air suspension are filled, only the ignition has to be switched on. If air pressure in the accumulators is too low, the compressor comes on and loads the battery. In this case, the battery must be charged, or the engine must be started.
- Stop the vehicle and apply the brake.
- Close vehicle doors.
- Tap the right-hand rocker switch in the center console in the appropriate direction until the vehicle has reached the low level. Then set the vehicle to the normal level.
- The middle indicator light next to the rocker switch is on permanently. If a further indicator light should come on, a different level is adjusted.
Note. To avoid controlling the air suspension level during a wheel alignment check/adjustment, switch the level control off during the alignment. Switch it on again after work is completed.
Switching Off Electronic Level Control (Air Suspension)
- BEFORE switching off air suspension, adjust car to normal level. See «Adjusting Car To Normal Level (Air Suspension)»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__adjusting-car-to-normal-level-air) .
- Switch on ignition, with engine off.
- Push rocker switch forwards for 5-10 seconds. The message "Car May Now Be Lifted" appears in the variable control display of the instrument panel.
Switching On Electronic Level Control (Air Suspension)
- Switch on ignition.
- Push rocker switch forwards for 5-10 seconds.
- Start the engine and drive the vehicle. Level control comes on automatically.
JACKING & HOISTING
| CAUTION | Raising the vehicle in the sill area will lead to the deformation of body parts and to leakage in the underbody area. |
If the vehicle is equipped with electronic level control (air suspension), adjust the car to normal level and then switch off level control BEFORE lifting vehicle. See DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL .

AIR SUSPENSION PRECAUTIONS

The vehicle normal level MUST be set starting from the low level. The vehicle may be aligned and adjusted in this position only.
If the air suspension control module or one of the level sensors was replaced, a calibration must be carried out using the Porsche System Tester (factory scan tool).
WHEEL ALIGNMENT PRELIMINARY CONDITIONS
In order to prevent erroneous wheel alignment measurements, the following conditions must be met BEFORE starting wheel alignment
- Wheel alignment equipment properly calibrated.
- Wheel alignment platform with plates at the rear axle that can be rotated are advisable.
- Fuel tank must be full.
- Spare tire and tool kit installed.
- No passengers and without additional weight in vehicle.
- Tires must be set to correct pressure.
- If vehicle is equipped with air suspension, it must be adjusted to normal level. See «ADJUSTING CAR TO NORMAL LEVEL (AIR SUSPENSION)»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__adjusting-car-to-normal-level-air) under DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL.
WHEEL ALIGNMENT WORK SEQUENCE
- Ensure vehicle is prepared for alignment. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT PRELIMINARY CONDITIONS»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__wheel-alignment-preliminary-conditions) .
- Check and adjust the wheel alignment at the REAR axle first. Camber values at the front axle apply for the straight-ahead position of the wheels. Steering wheel and steering gear must be in straight-ahead position when toe is being adjusted.
- BEFORE wheel alignment values are adjusted at the front and rear axles, it is recommended that the vehicle height be checked at the empty weight. Conclusions can then be drawn about wheel alignment values in the event of any suspension alignment that becomes necessary later.
INITIALIZING & CALIBRATING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR
| CAUTION | The steering angle sensor MUST be calibrated if the camber and toe-in values are changed. The steering angle sensor MUST be initialized whenever the battery is disconnected (PSM light on). Steering angle calibration requires using the Porsche System Tester (factory scan tool). |
| WARNING | Danger of injury may occur due to malfunctions in the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) control range if the steering angle sensor is not calibrated, or calibrated incorrectly. |
Calibrating The Steering Angle Sensor
The steering angle sensor is part of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system. The steering angle sensor is integrated into the steering column switch assembly (combination switch).
The steering angle sensor must be calibrated using the Porsche System Tester (factory scan tool) under these conditions
- Turn ignition on, with engine off.
- Running gear set according to Porsche specifications.
- Wheels in straight ahead position, and steering wheel horizontal.
- In straight-ahead position, steering wheel may be turned by +/-2 degrees from horizontal position (steering center position).
- After successful calibration, stored fault code is erased from the fault memory. PSM indicator light in the instrument cluster will go out.
Initializing Steering Angle Sensor
- Turn wheels to the straight ahead position. Start engine.
- From the straight-ahead position, turn the steering wheel about 20 degrees to the left, and then 20 degrees to the right (past the straight-ahead position).
- Drive the vehicle straight ahead for at least one second at a speed above 2.5 MPH.
- After initializing, the PSM indicator light should go out and fault codes are erased from memory.
WHEEL ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES

Camber Adjustment (Rear Axle)
Before checking, see WHEEL ALIGNMENT PRELIMINARY CONDITIONS and WHEEL ALIGNMENT WORK SEQUENCE .
- Compress vehicle at front and rear by about 0.984" (25 mm), 2-3 times and allow it to spring back freely.
- Measure rear camber. If camber needs adjustment, loosen camber eccentric nut (A). (Scheme 4) Camber is adjusted by turning camber eccentric (A). (Scheme 5)

If camber needed adjustment, recalibrate steering angle sensor. Toe-In Adjustment (Rear)

- Measure rear toe-in. If toe-in needs adjustment, loosen rear toe eccentric nut. (Scheme 4)
- After loosening nut, turn toe eccentric to adjust rear toe-in. (Scheme 5)
- Tighten eccentric nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__torque-specifications). If rear toe-in needed adjustment, recalibrate steering angle sensor. - Measure front toe-in. If toe-in needs adjustment, go to next step.
- Center steering wheel by turning wheels to straight-ahead position.
- Remove cover for underbody (transmission protection). Remove heat insulation panel from steering gear. (Scheme 7)
- Mark steering gear center position. The marking for the steering center position is under the heat insulation panel at the front in the direction of travel, on steering gear housing. (Scheme 8)
- Clamp steering wheel in center position with steering wheel holder.
- Measure front toe-in. If necessary, adjust front toe-in at the tie rod end ball joint (B). Loosen lock nut to adjust. (Scheme 6)
- Tighten lock nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__torque-specifications).
- With steering gear still in center position, check steering wheel alignment. If necessary, reposition steering wheel to center position. See «STEERING WHEEL»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures) in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- If front toe-in needed adjustment, recalibrate steering angle sensor. See «INITIALIZING & CALIBRATING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__initializing-calibrating-steering-angle-sensor).
REPROGRAMMING
Whenever tires or wheels are changed, tire pressure monitoring system must be reprogrammed. Enter in the instrument cluster menu TPMS SETTINGS the tire type and tire size. These values will be stored in the control unit when the vehicle is driven.
Removal & Installation
- Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Disconnect battery.
- Remove driver side air bag unit. See «DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG UNIT»(ref-160463-S26109706202004021000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
- Place mating marks on steering wheel and steering column for centering of air bag spiral spring.
- Remove steering wheel by releasing multiple-tooth screw.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure wheels are still in straight-ahead position. Align mating marks made during removal.
- Tighten steering wheel screw to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__torque-specifications) . Air bag unit must lock with an audible click. Check by pulling at air bag.
- If vehicle is equipped with electronic level control (air suspension), initialize steering angle sensor. See «INITIALIZING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR»(/porsche/cayenne-s/i-2002-2007/remont/hoistjack/#specifications-procedures__initializing-steering-angle-sensor) under INITIALIZING & CALIBRATING STEERING ANGLE SENSOR.
