General instructions/safety instructions

In the following pages the 'offroad stabilizer control module' is also referred to as the 'ORS control module'.

The following points must be observed during vehicle diagnosis

  1. After the battery is connected, volatile memories must be reprogrammed. In the case of radio coding and tuning, the customer must be informed of decoding and the deleted tuner memory.
  2. After troubleshooting or repairs, erase the fault memory with the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 and carry out a test drive.
  3. After the test drive, read out the fault memory with the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 again.
WARNINGDanger! Danger of injury through triggering of driver's airbag Never hang the Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 over the steering wheel.
WARNINGDanger of injury and damage due to unusual vehicle handling when plugs or components are disconnected! Never disconnect plugs when the vehicle is in motion or drive the vehicle with plugs disconnected. Drive only with all parts fully installed and connected.
WARNINGDanger of personal injury from moving vehicle independently with gear engaged and engine running! Before starting the engine in a vehicle with manual transmission, take the vehicle out of gear and put the handbrake on firmly. Before starting the engine in a vehicle with automatic transmission, move the selector lever to position 'P' and put the handbrake on firmly.

Never disconnect battery with engine running Never start engine if battery terminal clamps are not connected securely Never pull off or push on plug connections for the control modules or other electronic components when the ignition is switched on. Always disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and pull off all plug connections to the vehicle electrical system control module when carrying out welding work on the vehicle

Fault code setting conditions

Fault codes can be set in several circumstances, e.g.

  1. battery disconnected
  2. plug connections disconnected
  3. faulty coding
  4. power failure
  5. etc.

In these circumstances, no fault is present in the system and the fault memory must be erased.

Troubleshooting procedure

Troubleshooting can only be performed when the fault is present. In other words, specific troubleshooting can only be performed in accordance with instructions (given under Diagnosis/troubleshooting for each fault code) if the entry has the status 'present' in the fault memory.

If the fault is currently 'not present', please check the following

  1. Diagnosis conditions are met; if necessary perform a short test or test drive
  2. All plug connections and ground points of the affected current path are OK.
  3. Set all wiring harnesses of the affected current path to a state that corresponds to driving by pulling and shaking them (loose contact)

Diagnostic conditions

Note. Important! Always connect a suitable battery charging device to the vehicle electrical system battery or to the designated jump-start terminal before starting diagnosis. All unnecessary loads must also be switched off.

Note. The fault can only be identified if the requirements listed under 'Diagnostic conditions' are met. For this reason, the specified procedure must be observed after a fault is repaired: Erase fault memory. Satisfy the requirements listed under 'Diagnostic conditions'. Read out fault memory again

Possible causes of fault

Note. The 'possible causes of fault' that are responsible for the fault are listed here. Please note that in certain circumstances further faults can be stored in the fault memory after troubleshooting (e.g. if plugs are disconnected). After carrying out repairs, read out the fault memory of all control modules and erase any faults.

Diagnosis/troubleshooting

Note. The fault memory Info key [F8] on Porsche System Tester II No. 9588 can be used to access the 'extended fault memory'. The following information can be displayed

Fault type

The following fault types are possible

  1. upper limit value exceeded
  2. lower limit value not reached
  3. no signal/communication
  4. Short circuit to B+
  5. Short circuit to ground
  6. implausible signal
  7. open circuit/short circuit to ground
  8. Open circuit
  9. please read out fault memory
  10. faulty

Fault status

The following status types are possible

  1. present
  2. not present

This information should be saved using the Save key [F4] and printed out.

Note. Visual inspection: During troubleshooting, please check first that the affected pins on the wiring harness plug connection are neither damaged nor corroded. The wiring and plugs of the affected components must also be checked for external damage and correct contacts. Repair damaged or corroded pins if possible, otherwise replace affected pins. Repair or replace damaged wires.

Note. Battery voltage and signals: A battery voltage of between 11.4 and 14.5 V is required for troubleshooting. This must be checked and provided if necessary. Both signals and voltages as well as components or fuses (input side) must be guaranteed on the vehicle electrical system.

Note. Specified resistance values are based on an ambient temperature of 20°C.

The off-road stabilizer control module includes the functions listed below

  1. Computer identification
  2. Computer configuration with ignition ON
  3. Checking the fault memory for fault entries, even in diagnostic mode
  4. Deleting the fault memory
  5. Reading measured values from switches and sensors

Supported functions

Commissioning

When the ignition 'terminal 15' is switched on, an internal function test (initialisation phase) is performed in the off-road stabilizer control module. When the internal function test is completed successfully, all functions integrated in the off-road stabilizer control module are released.

Operating condition

The off-road stabilizer control module is in operating mode once the ignition is switched on and the internal function test is completed successfully. Within the defined limits for power supply and temperature, all incoming signals are processed by the integrated software and the appropriate monitoring and control processes are performed.

Data transfer

The off-road stabilizer control module sends and receives data/ information via the following 'CAN data bus'

  1. CAN drive (C)
  2. Gateway (in instrument cluster)

Fault memory

Faults that occur during operation are stored in a non-volatile memory (e.g. EEPROM). The faults remain in memory even if no voltage is present at terminals 15 and 30. The fault memory is designed in such a way that the occurring faults, data source, fault type and fault deletion counter can be saved. The off-road stabilizer control module sends messages and checks the CAN drive cyclically for messages from other control modules. If no messages are received for a certain time period, a fault is stored in the fault memory.

The following drive links can be selected individually in the Off-road stabilizers system using the 9588 Porsche System Tester II in the drive link test.

  1. Set front-axle valve 'to depressurise front system'
  2. Set rear-axle valve 'to depressurise rear system'
  3. Switch on electric hydraulic pump 'to bleed the system'
  4. Switch on front-axle valve 'to check the front system'
  5. Switch on rear-axle valve 'to check the rear system'
  6. Switch on front-axle and rear-axle valves in turn 'to completely disengage the system manually'

Troubleshooting with no control module connected

Note. The 9588 Porsche System Tester II and the 'off-road stabilizer control module' are not connected.

  1. Ignition on
  2. The fuses of the 'off-road stabilizer control module' are OK
  3. The fuses of the 'gateway' in the instrument cluster are OK
  4. Battery voltage is OK
  5. Plug on 'off-road stabilizer control module' attached correctly

Possible cause of fault

  1. Incorrect vehicle type selected in 9588 Porsche System Tester II
  2. 9588 Porsche System Tester II is not connected correctly or is faulty
  3. Power supply of 'off-road stabilizer control module' is not OK
  4. 'Gateway' in instrument cluster does not function
