DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Parking assistant system is automatically activated when reverse gear is engaged. System uses 4 ultrasonic sensors evenly spaced along rear bumper centerline to detect objects at varying distances behind vehicle. Outer sensors (2) have a range of 60 cm approximately, inner sensors (2) have a range of 150 cm approximately.
Note. Sensors are NOT activated if vehicle rolls backward without reverse gear engaged.
System emits a single short tone when reverse gear is engaged to confirm system operation. Detected objects are indicated by intermittent tones. When object is less than 1 foot away from vehicle, system emits a continuous tone. Tone will stop if vehicle motion is stopped, and will sound again if motion resumes. Objects very low to the ground (i.e., below bottom bumper contour) may not be detected by sensors. Parking sensors cannot detect sound-absorbing objects (i.e., powder snow), sound-reflective objects (i.e., glass or flat painted surfaces) or very thin objects. Other ultrasound sources like pneumatic brakes of other vehicles or jackhammers may interfere with sensors.
Indication of system fault is through warning tones. If a system fault is present, the single tone emitted after reverse gear is engaged will be followed by a continuous tone of much lower pitch. Dirty or icy sensors will also indicate a fault by emitting a continuous tone of the same pitch as the single activation tone. CLEANING ULTRASONIC SENSORS
Sensors can be de-iced and cleaned using a steam-jet cleaner. Always maintain a sufficient distance to prevent damaging sensors and paint.
MODIFYING CODING
- Connect Porsche System Tester 2 to diagnostic socket. (Scheme 2)
- Turn on System Tester 2. Allow about 1 minute for Tester to come on-line.
- Turn ignition on.
- Select vehicle type and start diagnosis by pressing the "2.14" button. Computer will list all control modules on vehicle and will list non-existent (example: Tiptronic module on a vehicle with manual transmission) in gray.
- Select "Park Assistant" control module.
- Select "Modify Coding" Menu.
- Select vehicle type and press F8 to confirm.
PREPARING PORSCHE SYSTEM TESTER 2
- Connect Porsche System Tester 2 to diagnostic socket. (Scheme 2)
- Turn on System Tester 2. Allow about 1 minute for Tester to come on-line.
- Turn ignition on.
- Select vehicle type and start diagnosis by pressing the "2.14" button. Computer will list all control modules on vehicle and will list non-existent (example: Tiptronic module on a vehicle with manual transmission) in gray.

Accessing Fault Memory
- Connect Porsche System Tester 2 to diagnostic socket (located under left side of dashboard).
- Switch on ignition and System Tester. Allow about 1 minute for Tester to come on-line.
- Press F8 key to retrieve fault memory. Save with F4 key.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) LIST
Possible Causes
- Short circuit to B+ voltage in supply lead to outside right sensor.
- Short circuit to ground in supply lead to outside right sensor.
- Open circuit in supply lead to outside right sensor.
- Faulty outside right sensor.
Elimination
Clear fault memory, disengage reverse gear and turn ignition OFF. Turn ignition ON. Engage reverse gear and read out fault memory. If fault appears again, check electrical plug on sensor for open circuit.
If no open circuit, check for continuity between sensor connector, between pin 1 and pin 4. Check continuity between sensor connector, pin 1 and pin 2 also. In both cases, no continuity should exist.
If no faulty wiring is found, replace sensor.
- Short circuit to B+ voltage in supply lead to inner right sensor.
- Short circuit to ground in supply lead to inner right sensor.
- Open circuit in supply lead to inner right sensor.
- Faulty inner right sensor.

- Low vehicle voltage.
- Faulty generator.
Check voltage from battery and generator and replace any faulty components. Using Porsche System Tester 2, select "Actual values" menu Select "Control module supply voltage" and "Sensor supply voltage" menus and check values with reverse gear engaged and engine running. Supply to control module should be approximately 12 volts and supply to sensor(s) should be approximately 8 volts.
After checking actual values, clear fault memory, disengage reverse gear and turn ignition OFF. Turn ignition ON again, engage reverse gear and read out fault memory.
- Low vehicle voltage.
- Short circuit in supply leads to control module.
Check voltage from battery and generator and replace any faulty components. Using Porsche System Tester 2, select "Actual values" menu Select "Control module supply voltage" and "Sensor supply voltage" menus and check values with reverse gear engaged and engine running. Supply to control module should be approximately 12 volts and supply to sensor(s) should be approximately 8 volts.
After checking actual values, pull out license plate light and check continuity between plug (sleeve side) pin 4 toward pin 3.
- Low vehicle voltage.
- Short circuit in supply leads.
- Faulty sensor.
- Faulty control module.
Check voltage from battery and generator and replace any faulty components. Using Porsche System Tester 2, select "Actual values" menu Select "Control module supply voltage" and "Sensor supply voltage" menus and check values with reverse gear engaged and engine running. Supply to control module should be approximately 12 volts and supply to sensor(s) should be approximately 8 volts.
After checking actual values, clear fault memory, disengage reverse gear and turn ignition OFF. Turn ignition ON again, engage reverse gear and read out fault memory. If fault appears again, replace sensors detected as faulty.
- Control module not coded correctly.
- Faulty control module.
Clear fault memory, disengage reverse gear and turn ignition OFF. Turn ignition ON again, engage reverse gear and read out fault memory. If fault appears again, check coding. See MODIFYING CODING . If coding is correct and fault still appears, replace control module.
- Control module not coded correctly.
- Faulty control module.
Clear fault memory, disengage reverse gear and turn ignition OFF. Turn ignition ON again, engage reverse gear and read out fault memory. If fault appears again, check coding. See MODIFYING CODING . If coding is correct and fault still appears, replace control module.
Corroded ground points.
Inspect ground points for corrosion and replace any damaged points. Clear fault memory and repeat.
- Remove driver-side front seat. See «FRONT SEAT»(/porsche/boxster-s/986-2002-2004/remont/collisionavoidance/#parking-assistant__front-seat).
- Remove both fastening screws from cover of control module. (Scheme 4)
- Turn cover over and disconnect both electrical plugs. (Scheme 4)
- Unscrew control module from cover.
- To install, follow reverse order of removal. Ensure that wires are not pinched when reconnecting harness.

FRONT SEAT
Pull seat rail cover forward on front end of right and left seat rails. Move seat fully rearward. Remove front Torx screws from right and left seat rails. Move seat fully forward. Remove rear Torx screws from left and right seat rails. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove seat. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten seat rail Torx bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 N.m).
REAR BUMPER
| CAUTION | When installing rear spoiler, exhaust heat shields MUST NOT be installed if bent, distorted, damaged or if there is separation between metal sheets (pressed metal layers). If damaged heat shields are installed, damage WILL occur to bumper cover. |
Removal & Installation
To remove rear bumper, first remove rear spoiler. See REAR SPOILER. For further removal procedures (Scheme 5) For installation procedure (Scheme 6) Check gap dimensions of tailpipe, and adjust as necessary. (Scheme 7)

Removal
- Remove rear spoiler (bumper cover). See «REAR BUMPER»(/porsche/boxster-s/986-2002-2004/remont/collisionavoidance/#parking-assistant__rear-bumper).
- Disconnect electrical plug. Bend holding peg SLIGHTLY on sensor housing and push out sensor. Retaining plate remains in bumper cover. (Scheme 10)
- Remove insulating ring.

Installation
- Fit insulating ring BEFORE fitting sensor. Push sensor into housing and engage.
- Engage electrical plug.
- Install rear spoiler (bumper cover). See «REAR BUMPER»(/porsche/boxster-s/986-2002-2004/remont/collisionavoidance/#parking-assistant__rear-bumper) .
