Cooling System Specifications Porsche 944 I

911 CARRERA

The 911 Carrera uses an air-cooled cooling system. Cooling is accomplished by means of an axial-type blower mounted on the alternator shaft. Blower consists of an impeller, belt pulley and blower housing. Impeller and belt pulley are attached to alternator shaft.

Blower delivers air required for cooling engine, oil cooler and alternator as well as fresh air for heating system. Cooling air flows through upper molded plastic air guides to cylinders and heads.

Baffle plates mounted to cylinders provide uniform distribution of air. A duct incorporated into upper air guide leads airflow directly to oil cooler. Ducting for air delivery to heat exchangers is on both sides of blower housing.

CAUTIONIt is essential that when air guides and baffle plates are reinstalled, no openings or spaces are left. Cooling will be seriously reduced with possible major engine damage.

928S & 944

Water cooled systems are used on both 928S and 944 models.

RADIATOR CAP

On 928S models, radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at approximately 12.8-16.4 psi (.89-1.15 kg/cm 2 ). On 944 models, radiator cap pressure relief valve opens at approximately 14.5 psi (1.01 kg/cm 2 ) on vehicles built before 1/85, and at approximately 22 psi (1.5 kg/cm 2 ) on vehicles built after 1/85.

THERMOSTAT

On both models, thermostat begins opening at 178-185°F (81-85°C). Thermostat fully opens at 208°F (98°C) on 928S models, and at 194°F (90°C) on 944 models.
