SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
The following precautionary measures must be taken before disconnecting or total discharge of the battery or serious electrical damage can occur
- Never disconnect battery with engine running.
- Ensure battery is securely connected before starting.
- Do not use a boost charger to start engine.
- When jump starting use jumper cables with overvoltage protection.
- Always disconnect the battery before performing any welding.
- Always ensure ignition is in the OFF position before disconnecting any electrical components. Except for the following: On vehicles equipped with alarm siren tilt sensor M536 (located next to battery) ignition must be in the ON position with all loads turned off before disconnecting battery to ensure alarm siren will not be triggered.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | Before disconnecting battery, see battery disconnect procedures in appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
Note. After disconnecting battery or replacing ECM, drive vehicle to enable ECM to relearn driveability. Inform your customer that they may experience driveability different from what they are accustomed to until ECM completes relearn function.
Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. See «SERVICE PRECAUTIONS»(/porsche/911-carrera/996-2000-2005/remont/starter/#starters__service-precautions). Remove screw on air cleaner housing and loosen clamp on throttle body. Remove air cleaner and intake assembly. Disconnect all vacuum lines from throttle body. Disconnect idle speed motor and throttle position sensor harness connectors.
- Hold throttle linkage at wide open position and disconnect throttle cable from throttle mechanism on throttle body. Remove 4 bolts and remove throttle body. (Scheme 1) Remove vacuum check valve by pulling it off.
- Disconnect crankcase vent breather from air intake. Loosen 4 rubber intake boot hose clamps from each side of throttle body mounting (intake distributor). Push rubber intake boots aside and remove intake distributor from vehicle.
- Working under rear intake distributor. Pull back protective covering from starter cable. Disconnect electrical connections. (Scheme 2) Remove upper starter mounting bolt.
- Remove lower starter mounting bolt from generator mounting bracket. Carefully remove starter from vehicle through engine compartment.
Installation
Installation is reverse of removal procedure. Note intake boot to intake distributor mounting position. (Scheme 3) Tighten all fasteners to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Inspect intake system for air leaks, repair as necessary.
