RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Note. Before performing wheel alignment, perform preliminary visual mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components. See PRE-ALIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS in WHEEL ALIGNMENT THEORY & OPERATION article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Measuring
Ensure fuel tank is full, spare tire and tools are in luggage compartment, and tires are properly inflated. Check passenger and luggage compartments for extra-heavy items, and remove if present. Park vehicle on level floor. Bounce vehicle several times. Allow suspension to settle. If height from front to rear or side to side is abnormal, repair or replace suspension components as necessary.
Note. Boxster ride height is not adjustable.
911 Carrera
- To measure front riding height, measure distance from head of crossmember rear body bolt to floor (distance "A"). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). To measure rear riding height, measure distance from suspension subframe mating surface to floor (distance "B").
- Adjust riding height if it is not within specification. See «RIDING HEIGHT SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures) table. Ensure difference in riding height between left and right sides of vehicle does not exceed.2" (5 mm). Ensure difference in riding height from front to rear does not exceed.4" (10 mm).
- Turn adjusting nut on bottom of front strut spring seat. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4). To raise vehicle, turn nut clockwise. To lower vehicle, turn nut counterclockwise. Riding height changes are transmitted diagonally. For example, decreasing left front riding height decreases right rear riding height, and conversely increases right front and left rear riding height.
- Rear riding height may also be adjusted by removing rear strut and replacing spacer with appropriate thickness. Spacers are available in 3 sizes; 0.12" (3 mm), 0.22" (5.5 mm) and 0.31" (8 mm).
| Application | Preferred | Range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 911 Carrera | |||
| Front | 6.9" (174 mm) | 6.5-7.2" (164-184 mm) | |
| Rear | 6.2" (157 mm) | 5.8-6.8" (147-167 mm) | |

Note. Before adjusting alignment, check riding height. See RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT . Check and adjust rear wheel alignment before checking and adjusting front wheel alignment.
Front (911 Carrera)
Slightly loosen 2 nuts securing strut to steering knuckle. Install Camber Adjusting Eccentric (9265) over upper strut-to-steering knuckle bolt. (Scheme 6) Turn eccentric until front camber is set to specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Scheme 6
Rear (911 Carrera)
Adjust toe-in before adjusting camber. Remove cover for access to rear camber eccentric. (Scheme 7) Loosen camber eccentric nut. Turn camber eccentric until rear camber is set to specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten camber eccentric nut. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. If rear camber is adjusted, check rear kinematic toe-in. See REAR KINEMATIC TOE-IN under TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT.
Scheme 7
CASTER ADJUSTMENT
Note. Rear caster is not adjustable.
At ball joint carrier on lower control arm, loosen nut on bottom of pivot bolt and nut on top of caster eccentric. (Scheme 2) Rotate caster eccentric until front caster is set to specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten caster eccentric nut and pivot bolt nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Front
Clamp steering wheel in centered position. Loosen tie rod sleeve lock nuts. Adjust front toe-in by adjusting tie rod end length until toe-in is set to specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten tie rod sleeve lock nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Rear Toe-In
Remove cover for access to rear toe-in eccentric. (Scheme 7) Loosen toe-in eccentric nut. Turn toe-in eccentric nut until rear toe-in is set to specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten eccentric nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
Rear Kinematic Toe-In (911 Carrera)
- Check and adjust kinematic toe-in only if rear camber has been corrected. Remove cover for access to rear spring arm. Install Front Special Tool (9549) on rear lower control arm and Rear Special Tool (9550) on rear spring arm. (Scheme 8)
- Read and record bubble level position on both special tools. Read upper scale on rear special tool for left rear, and lower scale for right rear. Loosen kinematic toe-in eccentric nut. (Scheme 7) Turn eccentric until bubble level readings on both special tools are within 1.5 scale units of each other. Tighten eccentric nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/wheel-alignment/#specifications-procedures__torque-specifications). Ensure rear camber remains within specification.
