DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before working on steering column components, disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . |
Steering column is designed to be an energy-absorbing unit. A flexible joint and "U" joint connect steering column to steering gear. Tiptronic (automatic) transmission equipped vehicles are equipped with a selector lever lock (shiftlock) system. This system allows the ignition key to be removed only if selector lever has been placed in Park. In addition, the selector lever can only be moved with ignition switch in ON position and the brakes applied.
DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM
| WARNING | Wait 20 minutes after disabling air bag system before servicing steering column. Air bag system voltage is maintained for about 20 minutes after system is disabled. Servicing system before the 20-minute period may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury. |
To disable air bag system, turn ignition off. Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. To activate air bag system, reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Ensure AIR BAG indicator light comes on for 3 seconds and then goes out, indicating system readiness. If indicator light does not operate as specified, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before working on steering column components, disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. |
Removal
- Place wheels in straight-ahead position. Disable air bag system. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) . Remove air bag module-to-steering wheel Torx screws.
- Disconnect air bag connector. Remove air bag module from steering wheel. Set air bag module aside with padded side facing up. Remove steering wheel nut and spring washer.
- Mark position of steering wheel-to-steering shaft for installation reference. Use appropriate puller to remove steering wheel. Mark position of air bag contact unit-to-steering shaft for installation reference. Remove contact unit screws. Disconnect contact unit connector. Remove contact unit.
Installation
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. To center contact unit, move unit about 4 1/2 turns from left or right stop before installation. Ensure arrows on contact unit are aligned. New contact units are supplied pre-centered.
- Align steering wheel on steering shaft. Ensure electrical wires are not pinched during installation of steering wheel. Install spring washer and nut. Tighten nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__torque-specifications) . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW Torx screws. Check horn operation. Activate air bag system and ensure system is operating properly. See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) .

See «DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__disabling-activating-air-bag-system) . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD under «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__removal-installation) . Remove steering column trim panel.
- Disconnect contact unit connectors. Remove contact unit-to-combination switch screws. Remove contact unit. Disconnect combina-tion switch connectors. Remove combination switch from steeringcolumn.
To install, reverse removal procedure. To center contact unit, move unit about 4 1/2 turns from left or right stop. Ensure arrows on contact unit are aligned. Tighten steering wheel nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. Check AIR BAG indicator light to ensure system is functioning properly. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
IGNITION LOCK/SWITCH
Note. Ensure ignition key is in position "II" during removal and installation, as damage to steering column/ignition lock and shiftlock Bowden cable may occur.
Removal (911)
- Disconnect and shield negative battery cable. Remove radio, A/C-heater control panel, left air vent and knee guard. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD under «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(/porsche/911-carrera-4/996-1997-2000/remont/steering-column/#steering-columns__removal-installation).
- Place ignition lock in position "II" and unscrew Bowden cable (if equipped). (Scheme 1) Remove ignition switch trim. Drill out the 6 mm bolts at ignition switch.
- Center punch and drill a 5/32" (4 mm) hole, to a depth of 4 3/4" (120 mm), in 8 mm bolt securing ignition lock/switch to steering column protective (outer) tube. Finish drilling 8 mm bolt with a 5/16" (8 mm) bit.
- Disconnect ignition switch and buzzer contact connectors. Remove ignition lock/switch from steering column outer tube and dash. (Scheme 1) If threaded bushing is damaged, use a drift to tap bushing out.
Scheme 1
Installation (911)
- If threaded bushing was removed, use 2 washers and 8 mm bolt to pull threaded bushing into steering column outer tube. Place ignition lock in position "II".
- Install ignition lock/switch on dash/steering column outer tube. Snug shear bolts, DO NOT shear off heads yet. Connect ignition switch and buzzer contact electrical connectors. Install steering wheel.
- Attach Bowden cable with ignition lock in position "II". Ensure automatic transmission selector lever is in Park and turn ignition lock to position "0". Check operation of steering column/ignition lock and shiftlock system. If operation is okay, tighten shear bolts until heads shear off.
Steering column removal and installation procedure is not available from manufacturer. Use exploded view as a guide. (Scheme 2)
