Communication Interface Module Programming and Setup

IMPORTANTThe vehicle communication interface module (VCIM) has a specific set of unique numbers that tie the module to the vehicle it resides in. These numbers, the 10-digit station identification and 11-digit electronic serial number, are used by the National Cellular Network and OnStar to identify the specific vehicle. Because these numbers are tied to the vehicle identification number of the vehicle, these parts should NOT be exchanged with those of another vehicle. After replacing the VCIM, it is essential to reconfigure the OnStar system. Failure to reconfigure the system will result in an additional customer visit for repair. In addition, pressing and holding the white dot button on the keypad will not reset this version of the OnStar system. This action will cause a DTC to set.
  1. Install the scan tool. Use the special functions menu in order to perform the OnStar® setup procedure for this vehicle.
  2. Move the vehicle to an open area that is away from tall buildings with a clear view of unobstructed sky. Allow the vehicle to run for 10 minutes.
  3. Use the ID information menu on the scan tool to access the new station ID (STID) and the electronic serial number (ESN) from the new VCIM.
  4. Press the blue OnStar® button to connect to the OnStar® Call Center. Tell the advisor that this vehicle has received a new VCIM and ask the advisor to perform the following procedure: Add the new STID and the ESN to update the customer's account. Follow any additional instructions from the OnStar® advisor. Ask the advisor to activate the OnStar® Personal Calling feature, if available.
  5. The default language for voice recognition in the generation 6 OnStar module is English. To change the language resident in the module, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-341919-S38734030422009091700000) .

Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver (DRR).

Electronic Brake Control Module Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Power Steering Control Module Setup

The steering angle sensor initialization and steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration must be performed if any of the following has occurred

  1. The power steering control module has been replaced.
  2. The power steering link has been replaced.
  3. Steering effort differs between left and right.

Perform the steering angle sensor initialization and steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Initialization and Steering Shaft Torque Sensor Zero Point Calibration (Manual) or Steering Angle Sensor Initialization and Steering Shaft Torque Sensor Zero Point Calibration (Scan Tool) .

Powertrain Control Module Programming and Setup

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

The powertrain control module (PCM) cannot be programmed with updated software. The correct replacement PCM is already programmed. The only required setup procedure to perform after PCM replacement is to program the current vehicle identification number (VIN).

Radio Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup

This device requires no programming or setup.

Service Programming System (SPS)

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customers concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Due to the time requirements of programming a controller, it is recommended that an external power source be used to maintain system voltage. Stable battery voltage is critical during programming. Any fluctuation, spiking, over voltage or loss of voltage will interrupt programming. To ensure trouble-free programming, GM recommends using one of the following external power sources: A Midtronics PSC charger A fully charged 12V jumper or booster pack disconnected from the AC voltage supply Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CAND module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. FlexFuel (E85) Vehicles The fuel composition learn function is inactive. Programming with the fuel composition learn active will result in fuel trim DTCs. If necessary, drive the vehicle until the scan tool indicates that the fuel composition learn is inactive.
  2. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be fully charged before programming the control module. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicles battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  3. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  4. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  5. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  6. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup
