Code Types
There are 4 types of DTC categories
- Type "A" Emissions related. Illuminates MIL the first time DTC sets.
- Type "B" Emissions related. Illuminates MIL if fault is active for 2 consecutive driving cycles.
- Type "C" Non-emissions related. Does not illuminate MIL, but will illuminate SERVICE light.
- Type "D" Non-emissions related. Does not illuminate MIL or SERVICE light.
Freeze Frame/Failure Records
PCM stores one FREEZE FRAME record for the first failed test that sets a DTC and illuminates MIL. FREEZE FRAME will not be overwritten unless a misfire or fuel trim DTC is set.
Failure records are stored when any DTC is set. Some PCMs can store up to 5 failure records. Failure records will be stored for all types of codes, whether or not MIL is illuminated.
Typical data includes
- Air/fuel ratio.
- Airflow rate.
- Fuel trim.
- Engine speed.
- Engine load.
- Engine coolant temperature.
- Vehicle speed.
- Throttle position angle.
- Manifold absolute pressure.
- Injector base pulse width.
- Loop status.
Monitors
- Comprehensive Component Monitor Monitors PCM systems for opens, shorts, grounded and out-of-range sensors. Also monitors rationality of sensors. Rationality is whether the sensor's value is consistent with operating conditions of the other sensors.
- Misfire Monitor Monitors engine misfire using crankshaft sensor to determine location and severity of misfire. A catalyst damaging misfire will flash the MIL, and a non-catalyst damaging misfire is a normal Type "B" code.
- Fuel Trim Monitor Monitors short and long term fuel trim for being at maximum lean or rich limit.
- Oxygen Sensor Monitor Monitors all oxygen sensors for maximum voltage level, minimum voltage level and lean rich/rich lean switching rate.
- Oxygen Sensor Heater Monitor Monitors oxygen sensor heater by watching sensor's time-to-activity after a cold start.
- Catalyst Monitor Monitors catalyst efficiency by comparing activity rate of pre-catalyst oxygen sensor and post-catalyst oxygen sensor.
- EVAP Monitor Monitors EVAP system for large leaks, small leaks and purge flow.
Disconnect Battery
Note. On many OBD-II systems, PCM will retain memory for an extended period of time with battery disconnected. Memory may be retained for several days.
Disconnecting PCM power or battery ground will clear all PCM memory including DTCs, FREEZE FRAME, failure records, adaptive learning and system monitors.
Warm-up Cycles
If fault that caused DTC to set is repaired, PCM will begin to count warm-up cycles. After 40 consecutive warm-up cycles with no further faults, PCM will automatically clear DTC from memory.
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
After replacing PCM or if program needs to be updated, refer to latest Techline(R) information on PCM reprogramming. After reprogramming, perform CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE and PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS .
CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE
| CAUTION | Before performing Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) system variation learn procedure, always set parking brake and block drive wheels in order to prevent personal injury. Ensure hood is closed. Release throttle immediately when engine starts to decelerate in order to eliminate over-revving engine. Once learn procedure has been completed, control module will return engine control to operator and engine will respond to throttle position. |
Note. Battery must be fully charged and in good condition. Scan tool connection at DLC should be clean and tight before starting CKP system variation learn procedure.
- Turn ignition off.
- Ensure hood is closed.
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature.
- Turn ignition off.
- Using scan tool, select and enable CKP Variation Learn Procedure.
- Set parking brake when instructed by scan tool.
- Start engine.
- Apply and hold service brake pedal firmly.
- Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral.
- Steadily depress accelerator pedal until fuel cut-off is reached at 5150 RPM and hold. Release accelerator pedal after the second fuel cut-off has been reached.
- CKP system variation compensating values are learned when RPM decreases back to idle.
- Observe DTC status for DTC P1336.
- If scan tool indicates that DTC P1336 ran and passed, CKP system learn procedure is complete. If scan tool indicates that DTC P1336 failed, determine if other DTCs have set. If DTC other than P1336 is not set, repeat CKP learn procedure as necessary.
PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS
If replacing a PCM with a replacement part, after programming, these modules will learn incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. A PCM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn current vehicle's password.
10-Minute Learn Procedure
Note. Ensure latest Techline(R) Service Programming System (SPS) software is used.
- Connect Tech 2 scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Ensure accessories are off.
- Using scan tool, select "Request Information" under Service Programming and follow on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect scan tool from vehicle and connect it to a Techline(R) terminal.
- Using Techline(R) terminal, select "Service Programming System" and follow on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect scan tool from Techline(R) terminal and connect scan tool to vehicle.
- Using PassKey III(R) master key, turn ignition on, with engine off.
- Using scan tool, select "Program ECU" under Service Programming System.
- Leave scan tool connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
- Observe scan tool. After about 10 minutes, "PROGRAMMING SUCCESSFUL, TURN OFF IGNITION" should be displayed. Vehicle is now ready to relearn key information and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from off to on.
- Turn ignition off and wait 5 minutes.
- Using PassKey III(R) master key, start engine. The theft deterrent control module has now learned the key transponder information and PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
30-Minute Learn Procedure
Note. Ensure the latest Techline(R) Service Programming System (SPS) software is used.
- Using PassKey III(R) master key, turn ignition on, with engine off.
- Observe SECURITY indicator light for about 10 minutes. Indicator light should turn off.
- Turn ignition off and wait 5 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1 - 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
- Using PassKey III(R) master key, start vehicle. Vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
- Using scan tool, clear any DTCs.
DRIVE CYCLES
Note. See INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE SYSTEM CHECK .
Enable Criteria
Passive Test
- Engine coolant temperature is 39-221°F (4-105°C).
- Intake air temperature is 39-158°F (4-70°C).
- Battery voltage is greater than 10 volts.
- Active Test, if required, begins after engine goes into closed-loop fuel control.
Active Test
- Engine coolant temperature is 176-221°F (80-105°C).
- Intake air temperature is greater than 50°F (10°C).
- Engine operating in closed-loop fuel control.
- Battery voltage is greater than 10 volts.
- Barometric pressure is greater than 65 kPa.
- Engine coolant temperature is 203-212°F (95-100°C).
- Intake air temperature is 59-167°F (15-75°C).
- Engine in closed-loop fuel control.
- Engine has run for 6-8 minutes off idle in order to initiate test.
- Battery voltage is 10-18 volts.
- Barometric pressure is greater than 65 kPa.
- Engine coolant temperature is at 176-230°F (80-110°C).
- Intake temperature is less than 149°F (65°C).
- Barometric pressure is greater than 65 kPa.
- Engine coolant temperature is less than 158°F (70°C).
- Fuel level is 1/4-3/4 tank.
- Battery voltage is 9-16 volts.
- Engine coolant temperature is greater than 176°F (80°C).
- Engine in closed-loop.
- Engine running for more than 4 minutes.
- Battery voltage is 10-18 volts.
- Engine coolant temperature & intake air temperature are less than 90°F (32°C).
- Difference between engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature is less than 7°F (5°C).
- Battery voltage is 10-18 volts.
SUMMARY
If no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present and a no start condition exists, proceed to appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. If no DTCs are present and a driveability condition exists, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, ENGINE STALLS, etc.).
MIL INOPERATIVE
Note. For circuit reference, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See «POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-117480-S09475862442001082000000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Check fuse that supplies voltage to MIL. If fuse is open, go to step 10 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Connect fused jumper wire (3-amp) between MIL control circuit and ground. Observe MIL. If MIL illuminates, go to step 9 . If MIL does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Check fuse in jumper. If fuse is open, go to step 11 . If fuse is okay, go to next step.
- Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Check MIL control circuit for open between PCM and IPC. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Using test light connected to ground, probe MIL ignition supply voltage circuit at IPC harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step 8 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Repair open in MIL ignition supply voltage circuit. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Check IPC connector for poor connections. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14 . If connections are okay, go to step 12 .
- Check PCM connector for poor connections. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 14 . If problem connections are okay, go to step 13 .
- Repair short to ground in MIL ignition supply voltage circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Repair short to voltage in MIL control circuit. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Replace IPC. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to step 14 .
- Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-117480-S27791892072001082000000) PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair.
MIL ON STEADY
Note. For circuit reference, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See «POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK»(ref-117480-S09475862442001082000000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe MIL. If MIL turns off when ignition is turned on, go to step 5 . If MIL does not turn off when ignition is turned on, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe MIL. If MIL is illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is not illuminated, go to step 7 .
- Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Check MIL control circuit for short to ground between PCM and IPC. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 8 . If circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Repair MIL control circuit for short to voltage. After repairs, go to step 8 .
- Replace IPC. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to step 8 .
- Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-117480-S27791892072001082000000) under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair.
Code Enable Criteria
DTC will run when engine is running and DTC will set when PCM detects that oxygen sensor heater control circuit current is greater than the capacity of PCM internal driver, and condition is present for more than 20 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0401, P0404, P0405, P0440, P0442, P0446, P1404 or P1441 is not set.
- Engine is running.
- Ignition 1 signal is at least 9 volts and not greater than 18 volts.
- TP sensor angle is greater than 25 percent.
- TP sensor is steady for greater than 1.5 seconds.
- MAP sensor is greater than 63 kPa.
- MAP sensor is steady for greater than 3 seconds.
Conditions for setting DTC
- Actual MAF sensor signal is not within a predetermined range of the calculated MAF value.
Conditions for running DTC
- Engine is running.
- Idle air control valve position is greater than 2 counts.
- Ignition 1 signal is greater than 8 volts.
- Conditions present for greater than 0.5 second.
Conditions for setting DTC
- MAF sensor frequency signal is less than 1200 Hz.
Conditions for running DTC
- Engine is running.
- Idle air control valve position is greater than 2 counts.
- Ignition 1 signal is greater than 8 volts.
- Conditions are present for greater than 0.5 second.
Conditions for setting DTC
- MAF sensor frequency signal is greater than 11,500 Hertz.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0121, P0122 or P0123 is not set.
- Engine is running.
- Throttle angle is greater than zero percent, if engine speed is less than 1000 RPM.
Conditions for setting DTC
- MAP sensor signal voltage is less than 0.1 volt (12 kPa).
- Conditions are present for longer than 200 3X reference periods (67 crankshaft revolutions).
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0121, P0122 or P0123 is not set.
- Engine has been running for a length of time that is determined by start-up coolant temperature. The length of time ranges from 2 minutes at less than 22°F (-6°C) to one second at greater than 86°F (30°C).
- Throttle angle is less than 2 percent when engine speed is less than 3000 RPM.
- Throttle angle is less than 30 percent when engine speed is greater than 3000 RPM.
Conditions for setting DTC
- MAP sensor signal voltage is greater than 4.3 volts for 3 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0117, P0118, P0125, P0128, P0502, P0503, P1114 or P1115 is not set.
- Engine has been running for more than 10 seconds.
- Vehicle speed is greater than 25 MPH.
Conditions for setting DTC
- IAT signal voltage indicates an intake air temperature that is greater than 275°F (135°C).
- Conditions are present for at least 20 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0117, P0118, P0125, P0128, P0502, P0503, P1114 or P1115 is not set.
- Vehicle speed is less than 35 MPH.
- Mass airflow is less than 12 grams/second.
- Engine coolant temperature is greater than 140°F (60°C).
- Engine run time is greater than 3 minutes.
Conditions for setting DTC
- IAT signal voltage indicates an intake air temperature that is less than -35°F (-37°C).
- Conditions are present for at least 20 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- Ignition is on.
- DTCs P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0125, P0128, P0601, P0602, P1621 or P1683 is not set.
- Vehicle has a minimum soak time of 8 hours.
Conditions for setting DTC
- If PCM detects a temperature difference of greater than 27°F (15°C) between ECT and IAT, vehicle must be driven for 5 minutes at speed greater than 15 MPH. If IAT decreases greater than 12.6°F (7°C) then a block heater is indicated and test is aborted. If IAT temperature does not decrease, a block heater was not detected and DTC will set.
- Temperature difference ECT and IAT at start-up is greater than 252°F (140°C).
- Time spent cranking engine, without starting, is greater than 10 seconds.
DTC will run when engine is running and DTC will set when ECT sensor indicates an engine coolant temperature greater than 283°F (140°C) for more than 15 seconds.
DTC will run when engine is running and DTC will set when ECT sensor indicates an engine coolant temperature is less than -36°F (-38°C) for more than 15 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0107, P0108, P0122, P0123, P1106, P1107, P1121 or P1122 is not set.
- Engine is running for more than 2 minutes.
- Engine coolant temperature is greater than 167°F (75°C).
- MAP reading is less than 50 kPa for a TP sensor skewed high test.
- MAP reading is greater than 70 kPa for a TP sensor skewed low test.
- MAP is steady for 5 seconds or more.
Conditions for setting DTC
- TP sensor reading is greater than a predicted value when MAP is less 50 kPa.
- TP sensor reading is less than a predicted value when MAP is greater than 70 kPa.
- Conditions are present for 5 seconds.
DTC will run when ignition is on and DTC will set when TP sensor signal voltage is less than 0.1 volt for more than one second.
DTC will run when ignition is on, and will set when TP sensor signal voltage is greater than 4.9 volts for longer than one second.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTC will only run once per ignition cycle within enabling conditions.
- DTCs P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P1111, P1112, P1114 or P1115 is not set.
- Minimum air temperature is greater than 19°F (-7°C).
- Start-up engine coolant temperature is less than 104°F (40°C).
- Region 1 - Air temperature greater than 50°F (10°C) and start-up engine coolant temperature is greater than 14°F (-10°C).
- Region 2 - Air temperature greater than 19°F (-7°C) and start-up engine coolant temperature is 19-50°F (-7°C to 10°C).
- Region 3 - Air temperature greater than 19°F (-7°C) and start-up engine coolant temperature is -40°F to 19°F (-40°C to -7°C).
Conditions for setting DTC
- Region 1 - Engine run time is more than 6 seconds in order to achieve closed-loop temperature of 14°F (-10°C). Calibrated minimum amount of airflow has been exceeded. Maximum idle time has been less than 5 seconds.
- Region 2 - Engine run time is more than 154 seconds in order to achieve closed-loop temperature of 14°F (-10°C). Calibrated minimum amount of airflow has been exceeded. Maximum idle time has been less than 120 seconds.
- Region 3 - Engine run time is more than 287 seconds in order to achieve closed-loop temperature of 14°F (-10°C). Calibrated minimum amount of airflow has been exceeded. Maximum idle time has been less than 225 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTC will only run once per ignition cycle within enabling conditions. DTCs P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P1111, P1112, P1114 or P1115 is not set.
- Coolant temperature is greater than -40°F (-40°C).
- Coolant temperature is less than 172°F (78°C).
- Air temperature is greater than 19°F (-7°C).
- Engine has been running more than 2 minutes, but less than 30 minutes.
- Vehicle speed is greater 15 MPH for more than one mile.
- Mass airflow average reading is more than 15 grams/second.
Conditions for setting DTC
- The time for engine coolant to reach a preset temperature has been exceeded.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Engine has been running for at least 4 minutes.
- Engine coolant temperature is at least 158°F (70°C).
- Engine speed is at 550-3000 RPM.
- Airflow is 8-35 grams/second.
- Throttle angle is 3-35 percent.
- Ignition voltage is greater than 9 volts, but less than 18 volts.
Conditions for setting DTC
- PCM detects an active sensor with an improper HO2S voltage amplitude.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- System voltage is greater than 9 volts.
- Closed-loop commanded air-to-fuel ratio is 12-16.5.
- Throttle angle is 3-35 percent.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 1 signal voltage remains less 175 millivolts during normal closed-loop operation.
- HO2S 1 signal voltage remains less than 600 millivolts during power enrichment mode fuel control operation.
- Either condition is present for up to 50 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- System voltage is greater than 9 volts.
- Closed-loop commanded air-to-fuel ratio is 12.0-16.5.
- Throttle angle is 3-35 percent.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 1 signal voltage remains greater than 975 millivolts during normal closed-loop operation.
- HO2S 1 signal voltage remains greater than 200 millivolts during deceleration fuel mode operation.
- Either condition is present for up to 50 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Transmission is not in Park or Neutral.
- Engine has been running for at least 4 minutes.
- Mass airflow is 8-35 grams/second.
- Engine speed is 550-3000 RPM.
- Throttle angle 3-35 percent.
- System voltage is 9-18 volts.
- Engine coolant temperature is greater than 158°F (70°C).
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 1 lean-to-rich average transition response time was more than 95 milliseconds.
- HO2S 1 rich-to-lean average transition response time was more than 105 milliseconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Engine is running for at least 4 minutes.
- Ignition voltage is greater than 9 volts, but less than 18 volts.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 1 signal voltage remains between 408-512 millivolts for more than 30 seconds.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Ignition voltage is more than 9 volts, and less than 18 volts.
- Engine run time is more than 4 minutes.
- Engine coolant temperature is greater than 158°F (70°C).
- Engine RPM is 650-2500 RPM.
- Airflow is 4-26 grams/second.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 1 heater current is not within the calibrated range.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Closed-loop commanded air/fuel ratio is 12.0-16.5.
- Throttle angle is 3-40 percent.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 2 signal voltage remains less than 30 millivolts during normal closed-loop operation.
- HO2S 2 signal voltage remains less than 550 millivolts during power enrichment mode fuel control operation.
- Condition is present for up to 2.5 minutes.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0205, P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Closed-loop commanded air/fuel ratio is 12.0-16.5.
- Throttle angle is 3-40 percent.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 2 signal voltage remains greater than 999 millivolts during normal closed-loop operation.
- HO2S 2 signal voltage remains greater than 200 millivolts during deceleration fuel mode operation.
Conditions for running DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201-P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 or P1441 is not set.
- Engine has been running for at least 4 minutes.
Conditions for setting DTC
- HO2S 2 signal voltage remains between 412-500 millivolts for up to 90 seconds.
- Ignition voltage should be greater than 9 volts, but less than 18 volts.
- Test only runs once per trip.
- TP sensor change of more than 8 percent at least twice during the test.
Conditions for running DTC
