Tools Required

J 42059 Cigarette Lighter Socket Remover. See Special Tools .

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the auxiliary power outlet fuse from the underhood fuse block.
  2. Remove the receptacle: Look into the receptacle. There are two 3 mm (0.11 in) tab windows 12 mm (0.47 in) from the front of the receptacle. The J 42059 pushes the plastic latches from these tab windows and the receptacle can be pulled straight out. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . Place one side of the "T" portion of the J 42059 into a tab window (2). See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . The J 42059 will not fit straight into the receptacle. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . Angle the J 42059 slightly for insertion into the receptacle. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . Insert the other side of the "T" into the opposite tab window (1). You must move the J 42059 handle toward horizontal to engage the other tab window. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . Use the J 42059 to pull the receptacle straight out.   3. Remove the J 42059 . See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) .
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector. Make sure the connector remains routed through the opening.
  5. Remove the receptacle.
  6. Remove the retainer.

Installation Procedure

  1. If necessary, remove the cover (1) from the retainer (2).
  2. Route the connector through the retainer. Align the retainer to the slot in the opening.
  3. Install the retainer by pressing into place until fully seated.
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the receptacle.
  5. Align the tabs on the receptacle to the slots in the retainer. Install the receptacle by pressing into place until fully seated.
  6. If a lighter was installed, install the element. If a power auxiliary outlet was installed, close the cover.
  7. Install the auxiliary power outlet fuse to the underhood fuse block.

J 42059 Cigarette Lighter Socket Remover. See Special Tools .

  1. Remove the accessory power receptacle fuse.
  2. Raise the floor console armrest.
  3. Cover the handle end of the J 42059 with tape to avoid scratching the floor console compartment. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) .
  4. Remove the accessory power receptacle by placing one side of the "T" portion of the J 42059 into the receptacle opening. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) . Angle the other side into the opposite opening. Pull the accessory power receptacle straight out.
  5. If the standard method fails to remove the socket, use the following alternate method: Insert a small grinding tool with a cutoff wheel into the socket. Remove the plastic latches in the 3-mm (0.11-in) square windows. Use J 42059 as directed above to remove the socket.   6. Remove J 42059 . See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/grand-prix/vii-2004-2008/remont/body-electrical/#accessory-power-socket__special-tools) .
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector. Make sure the connector remains routed through the opening.
  8. Remove the receptacle.
  9. Remove the accessory power receptacle retainer.
  1. Route the connector through the retainer. Align the accessory power receptacle retainer to the slot in the opening.
  2. Install the retainer by pressing into place until fully seated.
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the receptacle.
  4. Align the tabs on the receptacle to the slots in the retainer. Install the accessory power receptacle by pressing into place until fully seated.
  5. Install the accessory power receptacle fuse.
  6. Lower the floor console armrest.
