| 1 | Engine Control Module CAUTION: Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the control module connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the control module (battery cable, powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM)/transaxle control module (TCM) pigtail, control module fuse, jumper cables, etc.) in order to prevent internal control module damage. Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables, or when charging the vehicle battery. In order to prevent any possible electrostatic discharge damage to the control module, do no touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board. Remove any debris from around the control module connector surfaces before servicing the control module. Inspect the control module connector gaskets when diagnosing or replacing the control module. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminant intrusion into the control module. The replacement control module must be programmed. Procedure Disconnect the electrical connectors. Release the retaining tab located in the battery box lower half using a small screwdriver or other suitable tool. Program the ECM, if replacing. Refer to Control Module References Tip: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100 percent. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5 000 km (3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change. |

Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn
Note. The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure is required when the following service procedures have been performed, regardless of whether DTC P0315 is set: Engine replacement Engine control module (ECM) replacement Crankshaft damper replacement Crankshaft replacement CKP sensor replacement Any engine repairs which disturb the crankshaft to CKP sensor relationship
Note. The scan tool monitors certain component signals to determine if all the conditions are met to continue with the CKP system variation learn procedure. The scan tool only displays the condition that inhibits the procedure. The scan tool monitors the following components: CKP sensor activity-If there is a CKP sensor condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set. Camshaft position (CMP) signal activity-If there is a CMP signal condition, refer to the applicable DTC that set. Engine coolant temperature (ECT)-If the engine coolant temperature is not warm enough, idle the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches the correct temperature.
- Install a scan tool.
- Monitor the ECM for DTCs with a scan tool. If other DTCs are set, except DTC P0315, refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) for the applicable DTC that set.
- With a scan tool, select the CKP system variation learn procedure and perform the following: Observe the fuel cut-off for the applicable engine. Block the drive wheels. Set the parking brake. Place the vehicle's transmission in Park or Neutral. Turn the air conditioning (A/C) OFF. Cycle the ignition from OFF to ON. Apply and hold the brake pedal for the duration of the procedure. Start and idle the engine. Accelerate to wide open throttle (WOT). The engine should not accelerate beyond the calibrated fuel cut-off RPM value noted in step 3.1. Release the throttle immediately if the value is exceeded. NOTE: While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine responds to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete. Release the throttle when fuel cut-off occurs.
- The scan tool displays Learn Status: Learned this Ignition. If the scan tool indicates that DTC P0315 ran and passed, the CKP variation learn procedure is complete. If the scan tool indicates DTC P0315 failed or did not run, refer to «DTC P0315»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-dtc-p0010-to-dtc-p0366) . If any other DTCs set, refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#vehicle-diagnostic-information-diagnostic-information-and-procedures__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-list) for the applicable DTC that set.
- Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully.
Description
The engine control module (ECM) learns the idle position of the throttle plate to ensure the correct idle. The learned airflow values are stored within the ECM. These values are learned to adjust for production variation and will continuously learn during the life of the vehicle to compensate for reduced airflow due to coking. Anytime the throttle body airflow rate changes, for example due to cleaning or replacing, the values must be relearned.
A vehicle that had a heavily coked throttle body that has been cleaned or replaced may take several drive cycles to learn out the coking. To accelerate the process, the scan tool has the ability to reset all learned values back to zero. A new ECM will also have values set to zero.
The idle may be unstable or a DTC may set if the learned values do not match the actual airflow.
Conditions for Running the Throttle Learn Procedure
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0111, P0112, P0113, P0506, and P0507 are not set.
- The engine speed is between 450-4,000 RPM.
- The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) is greater than 5 kPa.
- The mass air flow (MAF) is greater than 2 g/s.
- The ignition 1 voltage is greater than 10 volts.
Throttle Learn
- Ignition ON, engine OFF. With a scan tool, perform the Idle Learn Reset in Module Setup.
- Start the engine, monitor the TB Idle Airflow Compensation parameter. The TB Idle Airflow Compensation parameter value should equal 0 percent and the engine should be idling at a normal idle speed. If the engine is not idling normally, proceed with the Learn portion of the diagnostic.
- Clear the DTCs and return to the diagnostic that referred you here.
- The engine speed is between 450-4,000 RPM.
- The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) is greater than 5 kPa.
- The mass air flow (MAF) is greater than 2 g/s.
- The ignition 1 voltage is greater than 10 volts.
- Start and idle the engine in Park for 3 minutes.
- With a scan tool, monitor desired and actual RPM.
- The ECM will start to learn the new idle cells and Desired RPM should start to decrease.
- Ignition OFF for 60 seconds.
- Start and idle the engine in Park for 3 minutes.
- After the 3 minute run time the engine should be idling normal. If the engine idle speed has not been learned the vehicle will need to be driven at speeds above 70 km/h (44 mph) with several decelerations and extended idles.
- After the drive cycle, the engine should be idling normally. If the engine idle speed has not been learned, turn OFF the ignition for 60 seconds and repeat step 6.
- Once the engine speed has returned to normal, clear DTCs.
Removal Procedure
- Partially drain the cooling system. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716 Fill)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-ge) .
- Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector (1).
- Remove the ECT sensor.
Installation Procedure
- Apply sealant to the threads of the ECT sensor. Refer to «Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-24l-specifications__adhesives-fluids-lubricants-and-sealers) .
- Install the ECT sensor. Tighten: Tighten the sensor to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
- Connect the ECT sensor electrical connector (1).
- Fill the cooling system as needed. Refer to «Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716 Fill)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system__cooling-system-draining-and-filling-ge) .
- Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF)/intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
- Using a tamper proof TORX®, remove the MAF/IAT sensor screws.
- Remove the MAF/IAT sensor.
- Install the MAF/IAT sensor.
- Using a tamper proof TORX®, install the MAF/IAT sensor screws. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 0.6 N.m (5 lb in).
- Connect the MAF/IAT sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the throttle body. Refer to «Throttle Body Assembly Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the MAP sensor and the MAP sensor port seal if it is still retained in the intake manifold.
- Install the MAP sensor with the port seal into the intake manifold.
- Connect the MAP sensor electrical connector.
- Install the throttle body. Refer to «Throttle Body Assembly Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
| CAUTION | The oxygen sensor uses a permanently attached pigtail and connector. Do not remove the pigtail from the oxygen sensor. Damage to or removal of the pigtail connector could affect proper operation of the oxygen sensor. |
| CAUTION | The use of excessive force may damage the threads in the exhaust manifold/pipe. |
Note. The in-line connector and louvered end must be kept clear of grease, dirt or other contaminants. Avoid using cleaning solvents of any type. DO NOT drop or roughly handle the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
Note. The HO2S may be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is less than 48°C (120°F).
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer (3).
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector (2).
- Remove the HO2S electrical connector clip from the thermostat housing.
- Remove the HO2S.
Note. A special anti-seize compound is used on the HO2S threads. The compound consists of a liquid graphite and glass beads. The graphite will burn away, but the glass beads will remain, making the sensor easier to remove. New or service sensors will have the compound applied to the threads. If a sensor is removed and is to be reinstalled, the threads must have an anti-seize compound applied before installation.
- If reinstalling the old HO2S, coat the threads with anti-seize compound GM P/N 12377953 or equivalent.
- Install the HO2S. Tighten: Tighten the HO2S to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Install the HO2S electrical connector clip to the thermostat housing.
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector (2).
- Install the CPA retainer (3).
Special Tools
J 39194 Oxygen Sensor Wrench
| CAUTION | The oxygen sensor uses a permanently attached pigtail and connector. Do not remove the pigtail from the oxygen sensor. Damage to or removal of the pigtail connector could affect proper operation of the oxygen sensor. |

- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer (1).
- Disconnect the HO2S electrical connector (2).
- Using the J 39194 , remove the HO2S.

If the sensor is removed and is to be reinstalled, the threads must be coated with an anti-seize compound before reinstallation.

- Using the J 39194 , install the HO2S. Tighten: Tighten the HO2S to 41 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector (2).
- Install the CPA retainer (1).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the APP sensor bolts (1).
- Remove the APP sensor (2).
- Install the APP sensor (2).
- Install the APP bolts (1) and tighten to 10 N.m(89 lb in)..
- Connect the APP sensor electrical connector.
- Confirm that the APP sensor connector locking clip is fully secured.
| CAUTION | Do not use solvent of any type when cleaning the gasket surfaces on the intake manifold and the throttle body assembly, as damage to the gasket surfaces and throttle body assembly may result. Use care in cleaning the gasket surfaces on the intake manifold and the throttle body assembly, as sharp tools may damage the gasket surfaces. |
| CAUTION | Do not use any solvent that contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). This solvent may damage fuel system components. |
Note. DO NOT prop open the throttle blade with the ignition key in the ON position as it may set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) from the electronic throttle control (ETC) (1).
- Remove the throttle body bolts.
- Remove the throttle body.
- Inspect the throttle body gasket, and replace if necessary.
- Install the throttle body.
- Install the throttle body bolts and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) to the ETC (1).
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Perform the Throttle Learn procedure. Refer to «Throttle/Idle Learn»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
Throttle Body Cleaning
| WARNING | Turn OFF the ignition before inserting fingers into the throttle bore. Unexpected movement of the throttle blade could cause personal injury. |
| CAUTION | Do not insert any tools into the throttle body bore in order to avoid damage to the throttle valve plate. |
| CAUTION | Do not use any solvent that contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). This solvent may damage fuel system components. |
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Inspect the throttle body bore and the throttle valve plate for deposits. You must open the throttle valve in order to inspect all of the surfaces.
- Clean the throttle body bore and the throttle valve plate using a clean shop towel with Top Engine Cleaner P/N 1052626 (Canadian P/N 993026), ACDelco® P/N X66, or an equivalent product.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Perform the throttle/idle learn procedure. Refer to «Throttle/Idle Learn»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)
- If the fuel system requires repair, prevent fuel spillage by removing the fuel pump fuse. Refer to «Electrical Center Identification Views»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/electrical-component-locations/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-locator-electrical-center-identification-views) .
- Remove the engine cover, if required.
- Loosen the fuel fill cap in order to relieve the fuel tank vapor pressure.
- Remove the fuel rail service port cap.
- Wrap a shop towel around the fuel rail service port.
- Connect the CH-48027-3 (4) to the fuel rail service port.
- Connect the CH-48027-2 (2) to the CH-48027-3 (4).
- Place the hose on the CH-48027-2 (2) into an approved gasoline container.
- Open the valve on the CH-48027-2 (2) in order to bleed any fuel from the fuel rail.
- Close the valve on the CH-48027-2 (2).
- Remove the hose on the CH-48027-2 (2) from the approved gasoline container.
- Disconnect the CH-48027-2 (2) from the CH-48027-3 (4).
- Disconnect the CH-48027-3 (4) from the fuel rail service port.
- Remove the shop towel from around the fuel rail service port, and place in an approved gasoline container.
- Install the fuel rail service port cap.
- Install the engine cover, if required.
- Tighten the fuel fill cap.
Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)
- If the fuel system requires repair, prevent fuel spillage by removing the fuel pump fuse. Refer to «Electrical Center Identification Views»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/electrical-component-locations/#wiring-systems-and-power-management-component-locator-electrical-center-identification-views) .
- Loosen the fuel fill cap in order to relieve the fuel tank vapor pressure.
- Remove the engine cover, if required.
- Remove the fuel rail service port cap.
- Wrap a shop towel around the fuel rail service port and using a small flat-bladed tool, depress (open) the fuel rail test port valve.
- Remove the shop towel from around the fuel rail service port, and place in an approved gasoline container.
- Install the fuel rail service port cap.
- Install the engine cover, if required.
- Tighten the fuel fill cap.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to «Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-with-ch-48027) or «Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-without-ch-48027) .
- Connect the CH-48027-1 (1) to the CH-48027-2 (2).
- Remove the shop towel from around the fuel rail service port, and place in an approved gasoline container.
- Perform any tests and/or diagnostics as needed. For the proper usage of the CH-48027 , refer to the manufacture's directions. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- Relieve the fuel system pressure, if required. Perform the following steps: WARNING: Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure connection in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury. The towel will absorb any fuel leakage that occurs during the connection of the fuel pressure gauge. Place the towel in an approved container when the connection of the fuel pressure gauge is complete. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel rail service port. Place the hose on the CH-48027-2 (2) into an approved gasoline container. Open the valve on the CH-48027-2 (2) in order to bleed any fuel from the fuel rail. Close the valve on the CH-48027-2 (2). Remove the hose on the CH-48027-2 (2) from the approved gasoline container. Remove the shop towel from around the fuel rail service port, and place in an approved gasoline container.
- Disconnect the CH-48027-1 (1) from the CH-48027-2 (2).
- Disconnect the CH-48027-2 (2) from the CH-48027-3 (4).
- Disconnect the CH-48027-3 (4) from the fuel rail service port.
- Install the fuel rail service port cap.
- install the engine cover, if required.
- Tighten the fuel fill cap.
Special Tool
J 37088-A Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set
- Relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing any fuel system connection. Refer to the «Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-with-ch-48027) or «Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-without-ch-48027) .
- Remove the retainer from the quick-connect fitting.
- Blow dirt out of the fitting using compressed air.
- Choose the correct tool from the J 37088-A for the size of the fitting. Insert the tool into the female connector, then push inward in order to release the locking tabs.
- Pull the connection apart.
- Use a clean shop towel in order to wipe off the male pipe end.
- Inspect both ends of the fitting for dirt and burrs. Clean or replace the components as required.
- Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe end.
- Push both sides of the fitting together in order to snap the retaining tabs into place.
- Once installed, pull on both sides of the fitting in order to make sure the connection is secure.
- Install the retainer to the quick-connect fitting.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to «Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-with-ch-48027) or «Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-without-ch-48027) .
- Blow dirt out of the fitting using compressed air.
- Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male end connector.
- Pull the connection apart.
- Wipe off the male pipe end using a clean shop towel.
- Inspect both ends of the fitting for dirt and burrs.
- Clean or replace the components as required.
| WARNING | In order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, before connecting fuel pipe fittings, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe ends. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated. |
- Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe end.
- Push both sides of the quick-connect fitting together in order to cause the retaining tabs to snap into place.
- Pull on both sides of the quick connect fitting in order to make sure the connection is secure.
Fuel Tank Draining (Non E-85)

- J 42960-2 Fuel Flapper Door Holder. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- J 45004 Fuel Tank Drain Hose. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .

- Remove the fuel fill cap.
- Install the J 42960-2 into the fuel fill pipe in order to hold the door open. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- Insert the J 45004 into the fuel tank until the hose reaches the bottom of the fuel tank. See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- Use a hand or air operated pump device in order to drain as much fuel through the fuel fill pipe as possible.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. - Drain the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Draining (Non E-85)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-tank-draining-non-e-85) .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Loosen the fuel fill pipe hose clamp (1) at the fuel tank.
- Disconnect and reposition the rear stabilizer shaft. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/suspension-rear/#rear-suspension-system) .
- Disconnect the vapor recirculation line quick connect fitting (2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the fuel fill pipe hose from the fuel tank.
- Release the exhaust pipe insulators from the underbody hangers.
- Release the muffler insulator from the underbody hanger and slowly lower the exhaust to rest on a tall jackstand. If this is not possible, remove the rear half of the exhaust system at the take down flange.
- If applicable, disengage the rear antilock brake system (ABS) wiring harness connector clip from the side of the EVAP canister bracket.
- Disconnect the fuel tank jumper electrical connector from the underbody wiring harness.
- Disengage the underbody wiring harness connector clip from the EVAP canister bracket.
- Use an appropriate adjustable jack to support the fuel tank during removal.
- Remove the fuel tank strap bolts.
- Remove the fuel tank straps.
- Disconnect the fuel feed (2) and vapor (1) line quick connect fittings. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Cap or plug the fuel feed and vapor lines in order to prevent fuel loss and/or system contamination.
- In order to clear the exhaust pipe, slowly lower the right side of the fuel tank.
- Once the tank is clear of the right frame rail, remove the fuel tank down and forward toward the right side of the vehicle.
- If the fuel tank is being replaced, disconnect and remove the fuel tank electrical harness.
- If the fuel tank is being replaced, perform the following: Disconnect and remove the fuel tank vapor line. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Remove the EVAP canister. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Remove the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Remove the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- If the fuel tank is being replaced, perform the following: Install the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Install the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Install the he EVAP canister. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) . Install and connect the fuel tank vapor line. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- If the fuel tank is being replaced, install and connect the fuel tank electrical harness.
- Begin to install the left side of the fuel tank over the exhaust pipe.
- Raise the right side of the fuel tank into position inboard of the right frame rail. Use care in feeding the fuel feed, EVAP vapor line, and the fuel sender electrical harness over the exhaust system.
- Completely raise and install the fuel tank into position.
- Install the fuel tank straps.
- Install the fuel tank strap bolts and tighten to 20 N.m(15 lb ft)..
- Remove the adjustable jack from under the fuel tank.
- Remove the caps or plugs from the fuel feed and vapor lines.
- Connect the fuel feed (2) and vapor (1) line quick connect fittings. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the fuel tank jumper electrical connector to the underbody wiring harness.
- Engage the underbody wiring harness connector clip to the EVAP canister bracket.
- If applicable, engage the rear ABS wiring harness connector clip to the side of the EVAP canister bracket.
- Raise the exhaust into position and install the muffler insulator to the underbody hanger.
- Install the exhaust extension pipe insulators to the underbody hangers.
- Connect the fuel fill pipe hose to the fuel tank.
- Install the fuel fill pipe hose clamp (1) and tighten to 4 N.m(35 lb in).
- Connect the vapor recirculation line quick connect fitting (2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Position and connect the rear stabilizer shaft. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/suspension-rear/#rear-suspension-system) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Refill the fuel tank.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
- Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure: Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Inspect for fuel leaks.
Fuel System Cleaning
Note. If the fuel filter is plugged, the fuel tank should be inspected internally and cleaned if necessary.
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Inspect the fuel pump module strainer. Replace the pump module assembly if the fuel strainer is contaminated.
- Flush the fuel tank with hot water.
- Pour the water out of the fuel sender assembly opening in the fuel tank. Rock the fuel tank in order to be sure that the removal of the water from the fuel tank is complete.
- Allow the tank to dry completely before reassembly.
- Disconnect the fuel feed pipe at the engine fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Clean the fuel pipes by applying air pressure in the opposite direction of the fuel flow.
- Connect the fuel feed pipe to the engine fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
J-45722: Fuel Sender Lock Ring Wrench
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the fuel pressure sensor and sender electrical connections.
- Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vapor line quick connect fittings (1, 2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disengage the fuel feed line from the retaining features built into the fuel tank.
- Use the J-45722: wrench and a long breaker-bar in order to unlock the fuel sender lock ring.
- Raise the fuel sender assembly out of the tank far enough to access the vapor line quick connect fitting (1) on the underside of the sender cover.
- Disconnect the vapor line quick connect fitting (1). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel sender assembly (2) from the fuel tank.
- Install a NEW O-ring seal (3) onto the fuel sender.
- Install the fuel sender assembly (2) into the fuel tank far enough to connect the vapor line quick connect fitting on the underside of the sender cover.
- Connect the vapor line quick connect fitting (1). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Align the cover "paddle" or anti-rotation feature with the corresponding feature in the top of the fuel tank.
- Slowly apply pressure to the top of the spring loaded sender cover until the sender aligns flush with the surface of the tank.
- Use the J-45722: wrench in order to install the fuel sender lock ring. Turn the fuel sender lock ring in a clockwise direction.
- Turn the lock ring until the ring seats on the second detent.
- Engage the fuel feed line to the retaining features built into the fuel tank.
- Connect the EVAP vapor line quick connect fittings (1, 2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the fuel pressure sensor and sender electrical connections.
- Install the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Refill the tank.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
- Inspect for fuel leaks through the following steps: Turn the ignition to the ON position for 2 seconds. Turn the ignition to the OFF position for 10 seconds. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Inspect for fuel leaks.
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the fuel tank pressure sensor.
- Install the NEW fuel tank pressure sensor.
- Connect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Install the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel level sensor electrical connector from the molded-in tab on the pump module bowl.
- Disconnect the fuel level sensor electrical connector (1).
- Depress the retaining tab on the fuel level sensor and begin to slide the sensor away from the pump module.
- Carefully slide the sensor (2) the rest of the way off of the pump module.
- Carefully slide the fuel level sensor (2) into the slots on the fuel pump module bowl.
- Secure the retaining tab on the sensor into the slot on the pump module bowl.
- Connect the fuel level sensor electrical connector (1) to the pump module cover.
- Install the fuel level sensor electrical connector to the molded-in tab on the pump module bowl.
- Install the fuel pump module. Refer to «Fuel Tank Fuel Pump Module Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
| CAUTION | Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system in order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the open pipes and passages. |
Note. Always maintain cleanliness when servicing fuel system components.
- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to «Fuel Tank Draining (Non E-85)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-tank-draining-non-e-85) .
- Remove the fuel fill pipe bolt from the fuel fill pocket.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the fuel fill pipe bolt from the underbody.
- Disconnect and reposition the rear stabilizer shaft. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/suspension-rear/#rear-suspension-system) .
- Loosen the fuel fill pipe hose clamp (1) at the fuel tank.
- Disconnect the vapor recirculation line quick connect fitting (2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect and remove the fuel fill pipe hose assembly.
- Install and connect the fuel fill pipe hose assembly.
- Install the fuel fill pipe hose clamp (1) at the fuel tank and tighten to 4 N.m(35 lb in).
- Connect the vapor recirculation line quick connect fitting (2). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the fuel fill pipe bolt to the underbody and tighten to 10 N.m(89 lb in).
- Position and connect the rear stabilizer shaft. Refer to «Stabilizer Shaft Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/suspension-rear/#rear-suspension-system) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the fuel fill pipe bolt to the fuel fill pocket and tighten to 1.5 N.m(13 lb in).
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to «Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-with-ch-48027) or «Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-without-ch-48027) .
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel feed line retainer (1) from the fuel line bracket.
- Disconnect the fuel feed line quick connect fitting (3) from the fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) line quick connect fitting (2) from the EVAP purge solenoid. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Cap the fuel rail pipe and the EVAP purge solenoid in order to prevent possible fuel and/or EVAP system contamination.
- Remove the brake, fuel, and EVAP pipe clips (1, 2) from the studs on the front of dash.
- Remove the brake pipes from the clips.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the right rear frame bolts (4).
- Remove the right rear frame reinforcement (3).
- Disconnect the fuel tank fuel feed pipe quick connect fitting (1) from the chassis fuel feed pipe (3). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the fuel tank EVAP pipe quick connect fitting (2) from the chassis EVAP pipe (4). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Cap the chassis fuel and EVAP pipes in order the prevent possible fuel and/or EVAP system contamination.
- Remove the brake, fuel and EVAP pipe retainers (5) from the underbody studs.
- Remove the brake pipes from the retainers.
- Remove the fuel feed/EVAP pipe assembly from the vehicle.
- Place the pipe assembly on a work bench.
- Open and remove the upper fuel feed/EVAP pipe retainer (3).
- Open and remove the front of dash fuel feed/EVAP pipe retainers (4).
- Open and remove the underbody retainers (5).
- Replace any retainers as necessary.
- Install and close the underbody retainers (5).
- Install and close the front of dash fuel feed/EVAP pipe retainers (4).
- Install and close the upper fuel feed/EVAP pipe retainer (3).
- Position the fuel feed/EVAP pipe assembly to the vehicle.
- Install the brake pipes to the retainers.
- Install the brake, fuel and EVAP pipe retainers (5) to the underbody studs.
- Remove the caps from the chassis fuel and EVAP pipes.
- Connect the fuel tank EVAP pipe quick connect fitting (2) to the chassis EVAP pipe (4). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the fuel tank fuel feed pipe quick connect fitting (1) to the chassis fuel feed pipe (3). Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the right rear frame reinforcement (3).
- Install the right rear frame bolts (4) and tighten to 100 N.m (74 lb ft) plus an additional 90 degrees using the J 45059 . See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the brake pipes to the clips.
- Install the brake, fuel, and EVAP pipe clips (1, 2) to the studs on the front of dash.
- Remove the caps from the fuel rail pipe and the EVAP purge solenoid.
- Connect the EVAP line quick connect fitting (2) to the EVAP purge solenoid. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the fuel feed line quick connect fitting (3) to the fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the fuel feed line retainer (1) to the fuel line bracket.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
- Tighten the fuel fill cap.
- Inspect for leaks. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 10 seconds. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Inspect for fuel leaks.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to «Fuel Pressure Relief (With CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-with-ch-48027) or «Fuel Pressure Relief (Without CH 48027)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions__fuel-pressure-relief-without-ch-48027) .
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the fuel feed line quick connect fitting (3) from the fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (3) from the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connector (4).
- Disconnect the fuel injector wiring harness electrical (1) from the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
- Remove the engine wiring harness clips (1) from the fuel rail tabs (2).
- Remove the fuel rail bolts.
- Pull the fuel rail back and upward in order to release the fuel injectors from the cylinder head ports.
- Remove the fuel rail.
- Remove and discard the fuel injector tip insulators.
- Disconnect the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connectors from the fuel injectors.
- Remove the fuel injector wiring harness clips from the fuel rail.
- Remove the fuel injector wiring harness from the fuel rail.
- Remove the fuel injectors, if necessary. Refer to «Fuel Injector Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
Note. Install only NEW lower O-rings if the fuel rail and injectors were removed and re-installed. If the fuel rail was replaced, then install NEW upper and lower O-rings.
- Install the fuel injectors, if necessary. Refer to «Fuel Injector Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the fuel injector wiring harness clips to the fuel rail.
- Connect the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connectors to the fuel injectors.
- Lubricate the NEW fuel injector tip insulators with clean engine oil.
- Install the NEW fuel injector tip insulators to the cylinder head.
- Lubricate the fuel injector O-rings with clean engine oil.
- With the fuel injectors positioned downward, lower the fuel injectors into the cylinder head ports.
- Carefully push down on the fuel rail in order to insert the injectors into the cylinder head ports. CAUTION: Refer to «Fastener Caution»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#dangers-warnings-and-cautions__fastener-caution) .
- Install the fuel rail bolts and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Install the engine wiring harness clips (1) to the fuel rail tabs (2).
- Connect the fuel injector wiring harness electrical (1) to the MAP sensor.
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (3) to the fuel injector wiring harness electrical connector (4).
- Connect the fuel feed line quick connect fitting (3) to the fuel rail. Refer to «Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
- Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure: Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF for 2 seconds. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds. Turn ON the ignition. Inspect for fuel leaks.
| CAUTION | Use care in removing the fuel injectors in order to prevent damage to the fuel injector electrical connector pins or the fuel injector nozzles. Do not immerse the fuel injector in any type of cleaner. The fuel injector is an electrical component and may be damaged by this cleaning method. |
Note. If the fuel injectors are found to be leaking, the engine oil may be contaminated with fuel.
- Remove the fuel rail. Refer to «Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the fuel injector retainer (1).
- Remove the fuel injector (3) from the fuel rail.
- Remove the fuel injector upper O-ring (2).
- Remove the fuel injector lower O-ring (4).
- Lubricate the NEW fuel injector O-rings with clean engine oil.
- Install the NEW fuel injector upper O-ring (2).
- Install the NEW fuel injector lower O-ring (4).
- Install the fuel injector (3) to the fuel rail.
- Install the fuel injector retainer (1).
- Install the fuel rail. Refer to «Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.
- Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve tube. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the chassis EVAP vapor line from the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the EVAP canister purge valve bracket bolt.
- Remove the EVAP canister purge valve with bracket.
- Remove the EVAP canister purge valve from the bracket.
- Inspect for carbon release in the EVAP canister purge valve ports. If there is any loose carbon, replace the EVAP canister and any components necessary to remove the carbon particles.
- Install the EVAP canister purge valve to the bracket.
- Position the EVAP canister purge valve with bracket to the cylinder head.
- Install the EVAP canister purge valve bracket bolt and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Connect the EVAP canister purge valve tube. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the chassis EVAP vapor line to the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .

- Cap or plug the EVAP pipe and the purge solenoid in order to prevent system contamination.
- Open the upper retainer (1) and remove the EVAP pipe from the retainer.
- Open the retainers (2, 3) attached to the studs on the front of dash and remove the EVAP pipe.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .

- Remove the side rail reinforcement bolts (1).
- Remove the front frame bolts (1).
- Remove the side rail reinforcements (3).
- Remove the rear brake pipe bracket nuts and release the brackets from the body studs.
- Release the pipe retainers from the vehicle underbody.
- Remove the EVAP pipe from the retainers.
- Lower the rear of the pipe while moving the pipe rearward slightly, then lower the front of the pipe.
- Remove the EVAP pipe from the vehicle.
- Position the EVAP pipe to the vehicle.
- With the rear of the pipe positioned slightly rearward and down, raise the front of the pipe into position.
- Install the remainder of the pipe into position.
- Install the EVAP pipe to the pipe retainers.
- Secure the pipe retainers to the vehicle underbody.
- Position the side rail reinforcements (3) to the side rail and frame.
- Install the front frame bolts (1) and tighten to 100 N.m (73 lb ft) plus an additional 180 degrees using the J 45059 . See «Special Tools»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-special-tools-and-equipment) .
- Install the side rail reinforcement bolts (1) and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
- Connect the EVAP pipe (1) quick connect fitting to the fuel tank EVAP pipe. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the caps or plugs from the EVAP pipe and the purge solenoid.
- Install the EVAP pipe to the retainers (2, 3) and close the retainers.
- Install the EVAP pipe to the upper retainer (1) and close the retainer.
- Connect the EVAP pipe (2) quick connect fitting to the purge solenoid. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .

- From under the fuel tank, remove the TORX® bolt attaching the EVAP canister to bracket.
- Slide the EVAP canister upward from the bracket.
- Slide the NEW EVAP canister down into the bracket.
- From under the fuel tank, install the Torx® bolt attaching the EVAP canister to bracket. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the fuel tank EVAP vapor line to EVAP canister quick connect fitting. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Connect the EVAP canister to EVAP canister vent solenoid valve line quick connect fitting. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .

J 41413 EVAP Pressure and Purge Station
Inspection Procedure
- Turn OFF the ignition.
- Remove the EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Lightly tap the EVAP canister purge valve on a hard surface.
- Inspect for carbon particles exiting either of the vacuum ports. If no carbon particles were detected, but a blockage was detected during a diagnostic procedure, install the original EVAP canister purge valve. Continue with the cleaning procedure. If carbon particles are found during the inspection procedure, continue with the cleaning procedure. If a diagnostic procedure directed you to replace the EVAP canister purge valve and no carbon particles were detected, replace the EVAP canister purge valve. Return to the published service procedure.
Cleaning Procedure
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to «Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/ignition-switchsteering-lock/#general-information__lifting-and-jacking-the-vehicle) .
- Remove the EVAP canister. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Turn OFF the main valve on the J 41413 .
- Disconnect the hose from the diagnostic station pressure regulator.
- Using a section of vacuum hose, connect one end onto the EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station pressure regulator.
- Connect the other end of the vacuum hose to the canister side of the purge pipe.
- Turn ON the main nitrogen cylinder valve and continue to discharge nitrogen for 15 seconds.
- If the nitrogen does not clear the blockage, replace the purge pipe.
- Return the EVAP pressure/purge diagnostic station to the stations original condition.
- Install a new EVAP canister. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install a new EVAP canister purge valve. Refer to «Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Return to the diagnostic table that sent you here.
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors (1) from the ignition coil(s) (2).
- Remove the ignition coil bolt(s).
- Remove the ignition coil(s).
- Install the ignition coil(s).
- Install the ignition coil bolt(s) and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector(s) (1) to the ignition coil(s) (2).
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
| CAUTION | This engine has aluminum cylinder heads. Do not remove the spark plugs from a hot engine, allow it to cool first. Removing the spark plugs from a hot engine may cause spark plug thread damage or cylinder head damage. |
- Remove the ignition coil(s). Refer to «Ignition Coil Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Remove the spark plugs using a 5/8 inch spark plug socket.
- Install the spark plugs. Specification: The spark plug gap is 1.0 mm (0.040 in). Tighten: Tighten the plugs to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
- Install the ignition coil(s). Refer to «Ignition Coil Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
Spark Plug Usage
- Ensure that the correct spark plug is installed. An incorrect spark plug causes driveability conditions. Refer to «Ignition System Specifications»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-specifications__ignition-system-specifications) for the correct spark plug.
- Ensure that the spark plug has the correct heat range. An incorrect heat range causes the following conditions: Spark plug fouling - colder plug Pre-ignition causing spark plug and/or engine damage - hotter plug
Spark Plug Inspection
- Inspect the terminal post (1) for damage. Inspect for a bent or broken terminal post (1). Test for a loose terminal post (1) by twisting and pulling the post. The terminal post (1) should NOT move.
- Inspect the insulator (2) for flashover or carbon tracking, soot. This is caused by the electrical charge traveling across the insulator (2) between the terminal post (1) and ground. Inspect for the following conditions: Inspect the spark plug boot for damage. Inspect the spark plug recess area of the cylinder head for moisture, such as oil, coolant, or water. A spark plug boot that is saturated causes arcing to ground.
- Inspect the insulator (2) for cracks. All or part of the electrical charge may arc through the crack instead of the electrodes (3, 4).
- Inspect for evidence of improper arcing. Measure the gap between the center electrode (4) and the side electrode (3) terminals. Refer to «Ignition System Specifications»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-specifications__ignition-system-specifications) . An excessively wide electrode gap can prevent correct spark plug operation. Inspect for the correct spark plug torque. Refer to «Ignition System Specifications»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-specifications__ignition-system-specifications) . Insufficient torque can prevent correct spark plug operation. An over torqued spark plug, causes the insulator (2) to crack. Inspect for signs of tracking that occurred near the insulator tip instead of the center electrode (4). Inspect for a broken or worn side electrode (3). Inspect for a broken, worn, or loose center electrode (4) by shaking the spark plug. A rattling sound indicates internal damage. A loose center electrode (4) reduces the spark intensity. Inspect for bridged electrodes (3, 4). Deposits on the electrodes (3, 4) reduce or eliminates the gap. Inspect for worn or missing platinum pads on the electrodes (3, 4), if equipped. Inspect for excessive fouling.
- Inspect the spark plug recess area of the cylinder head for debris. Dirty or damaged threads can cause the spark plug not to seat correctly during installation.
Spark Plug Visual Inspection
- Normal operation-Brown to grayish-tan with small amounts of white powdery deposits are normal combustion by-products from fuels with additives.
- Carbon Fouled-Dry, fluffy black carbon, or soot caused by the following conditions: Rich fuel mixtures Leaking fuel injectors Excessive fuel pressure Restricted air filter element Incorrect combustion Reduced ignition system voltage output Weak coils Worn ignition wires Incorrect spark plug gap Excessive idling or slow speeds under light loads can keep spark plug temperatures so low that normal combustion deposits may not burn off.
- Deposit Fouling-Oil, coolant, or additives that include substances such as silicone, very white coating, reduces the spark intensity. Most powdery deposits will not effect spark intensity unless they form into a glazing over the electrode.
- Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector (3).
- Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to «Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement (LE5)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-24l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Remove the positive battery cable nut (2) from the starter solenoid.
- Remove the positive battery cable (3) from the starter solenoid.
- Remove the CKP sensor bolt.
- Remove the CKP sensor.
- Lubricate the CKP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
- Install the CKP sensor. CAUTION: Refer to «Fastener Caution»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#dangers-warnings-and-cautions__fastener-caution) .
- Install the CKP sensor bolt. Tighten: Tighten the sensor bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Install the positive battery cable (3) to the starter solenoid.
- Install the positive battery cable nut (2) to the starter solenoid. Tighten: Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector (3).
- Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to «Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement (LE5)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-24l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (7) from the intake camshaft position (CMP) sensor (6).
- Remove the CMP sensor bolt.
- Remove the CMP sensor.
- Lubricate the CMP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
- Install the CMP sensor.
- Install the CMP sensor bolt and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (7) to the intake CMP sensor (6).
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the exhaust camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector (2).
- Remove the CMP sensor bolt. Intake CMP shown, exhaust CMP similar.
- Remove the CMP sensor.
- Lubricate the CMP sensor O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
- Install the CMP sensor. Intake CMP shown, exhaust CMP similar. CAUTION: Refer to «Fastener Caution»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/oem-general-information/#dangers-warnings-and-cautions__fastener-caution) .
- Install the CMP sensor bolt. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the exhaust CMP sensor electrical connector (2).
- Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the exhaust camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid valve (4), if required.
- Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) from the intake CMP actuator solenoid valve (3), if required.
- Remove the exhaust (1) CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve, if required.
- Remove the intake (2) CMP actuator solenoid valve bolt and valve, if required.
- Inspect the solenoid valve O-ring seals for damage, replace as necessary.
- Lubricate the solenoid valve O-ring seals with clean engine oil.
- Install the intake (2) CMP actuator solenoid valve and bolt, if required. Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Install the exhaust (1) CMP actuator solenoid valve and bolt, if required. Tighten the bolt to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) to the intake CMP actuator solenoid valve (3), if required.
- Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the exhaust CMP actuator solenoid valve (4), if required.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to «Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions) .
- Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector (1).
- Remove the KS electrical connector clip from the oil level indicator tube bracket.
- Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to «Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement (LE5)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-24l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Remove the KS bolt.
- Remove the KS.
Note. Rotate the pigtail 90 degrees from vertical before securing the fastener.
- Install the KS.
- Install the KS bolt. Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Connect the KS electrical connector (1).
- Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to «Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement (LE5)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-24l-repair-instructions-on-vehicle) .
- Install the KS electrical connector clip to the oil level indicator tube bracket.

- Disconnect the secondary air injection pump hose (1) from the secondary air injection check valve. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions)
- Remove the secondary air injection pipe from the vehicle.
- Connect the secondary air injection pump hose (1) to the secondary air injection check valve. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions)
- Install the secondary air injection pump hose to the vehicle.
- Connect the secondary air injection pump hose (1) to the secondary air injection pump. Refer to «Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/testing-diagnostics/#engine-control-system-fuel-system-24l-repair-instructions)

Scheme 7: Secondary Air Injection Pump Replacement
- Disconnect the mass airflow (MAF)/intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector connector.
- Loosen the upper air cleaner cover screws.
- Remove the upper air cleaner cover.
- Remove the air cleaner filter from the lower air cleaner housing.
- Inspect the air cleaner filter for dust, dirt and water contamination.
- Replace as necessary. Refer to «Maintenance Schedule (North American Emissions)»(/pontiac/g6/i-final-2010-2010/remont/lubrication-system/#maintenance-and-lubrication__maintenance-schedule-north-american-emissions) .
- Install the air cleaner filter into the lower air cleaner housing.
- Install the upper air cleaner cover to the lower air cleaner housing.
- Secure the air cleaner housing cover. Tighten: Tighten the screws to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
- Connect the MAF/IAT sensor electrical connector connector.
