TROUBLE SHOOTING

Note. To trouble shoot engine mechanical components, see appropriate table in TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

1.6L (98") 4-CYLINDER

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain cooling system. Remove upper radiator support and upper half of fan shroud. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped).
  2. Remove radiator hoses, radiator and grille. Remove A/C condenser from radiator support (if equipped). Remove heater core housing and set aside. Remove engine mount nuts and clips.
  3. Raise vehicle, drain crankcase and disconnect the exhaust pipe at manifold. Remove body-to-crossmember braces. Remove rack and pinion assembly from crossmember and steering shaft.
  4. Pull rack and pinion assembly out of way and remove stabilizer bar. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-26436) and raise engine. Remove oil pan bolts and pull oil pan down. Remove oil pump suction pipe assembly and remove oil pan.

2.0L (122") 4-CYLINDER

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove right front wheel and splash shield. Raise vehicle, drain crankcase and disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold or waste gate (if equipped).
  2. Remove A/C brace at starter and bracket (if equipped). Remove flywheel access cover, starter bracket and starter.
  3. Remove automatic transaxle oil filter and extension (if equipped). Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

All Models Except Fiero & Grand Am

  1. Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Remove cradle-to-front engine mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold and rear transaxle mount.
  2. Remove starter, flywheel access cover and upper alternator bracket. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-22825-40). Remove lower alternator and engine support brackets. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Fiero

  1. Install Engine Support Fixture (J-28467) with one leg attached to left strut mounting nuts and other resting on inner side rail above battery. Raise engine enough to relieve tension on cradle mounts.
  2. Raise vehicle and support at lift points. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and remove spring hangers. Remove both rear wheels and disconnect both lower control arms and toe-link rods at knuckle.
  3. Disconnect emergency brake cable at cradle and remove engine and transmission mount nuts. Remove cradle bolts and cradle assembly. Drain crankcase and remove front engine mount-to-support bracket nuts.
  4. Remove flywheel access cover, starter and upper alternator bracket. Raise engine and remove lower alternator and engine support brackets. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Grand Am

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise vehicle and remove exhaust pipe at manifold and hangers and move out of way. Remove flywheel access cover and starter. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

Note. When reinstalling oil pan on all 2.5L models, install timing gear cover bolts after oil pan bolts are tightened.

2.8L (173") V6

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. On Firebird models, remove air cleaner, distributor cap and upper fan shroud. On all models, raise vehicle, drain crankcase and remove flywheel access cover.
  2. On Firebird models, disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. On all models, remove starter, support engine and remove engine mount bracket-to-engine bolts. Remove oil pan bolts. Raise engine and remove oil pan.

3.0L (181") & 3.8L (231") V6

Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove flywheel access cover, exhaust crossover pipe and engine mount bolts. Raise and support engine. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.

4.3L (262") V6

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain crankcase. Attach Engine Support Fixture (J-28467). Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front tire and left lower control arm-to-frame bolts.
  2. Remove left stabilizer bar link and move left lower control arm out of way. Remove engine splash shield, engine mount-to-frame nuts and front transaxle-to-frame nuts. Using Engine Support Fixture (J-29467), raise transaxle until transaxle mount clears studs on frame. Disconnect wiring harness from front frame crossmember.
  3. Remove bolts retaining front crossmember to right side of frame. Remove left body mounts, left and front crossmember assembly. Remove flywheel access cover and starter assembly. Remove engine mount bracket and engine absorber assembly. Remove oil pan bolts and oil pan.
WARNINGTo avoid risk of personal injury, proper installation of engine support is required.

5.0L (305") V8

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner and fan shroud. Remove cruise control screw bracket (if equipped). Raise vehicle and drain crankcase. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and converter.
  2. Remove starter, flywheel access cover and engine mount through bolts. Remove oil pan bolts, lower oil pan and position forward crankshaft throw and/or counterweight horizontally. Raise engine, loosely reinstall through bolts and remove oil pan.
