Engine Removal Pontiac 6000 I

1.6L (98") 4-CYLINDER

  1. Mark hinges for reassembly and remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Remove battery cable clips from right frame rail. Drain cooling system. Disconnect radiator hoses from engine and heater hoses from heater.
  2. Disconnect engine wiring harness at bulkhead connector. Remove upper radiator support. Remove radiator and fan assembly. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect necessary vacuum hoses. Disconnect Computer Command Control (CCC) harness at engine.
  3. If equipped, remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside with hoses attached. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold. Disconnect clutch cable at oil pan on manual transmission.
  4. Disconnect fuel hose at frame. Disconnect back-up light harness at transmission. Remove flywheel dust cover or converter underpan where applicable. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, remove converter-to-flywheel bolts.
  5. Remove converter housing or flywheel housing to engine retaining bolts and lower vehicle. Install floor jack or other suitable supporter under transmission. Remove safety straps from front engine mounts and remove mount nuts.
  6. Install engine lifting device. On manual transmission equipped vehicles, loosen clutch cover to flywheel bolts alternately, a turn at a time to prevent distortion of clutch cover until spring pressure is released.
  7. Remove flywheel from crankshaft and install engine to engine stand removing lifting device. Remove engine from vehicle. Pull engine forward to clear transmission while slowly lifting engine.

1.8L (112") OHC 4-CYLINDER

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect engine harness at bulkhead. Disconnect electrical connectors at brake cylinder, A/C relay cluster switches, and temperature switch at thermostat housing.
  2. Disconnect wiring at ECM and pull harness through bulkhead. Remove accelerator cable from EFI and bracket. Remove power steering hoses at cut-off switch and return hose at pump. Remove vacuum hoses at MAP sensor, canister, and EFI.
  3. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses. Disconnect shift cable at transmission. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Remove speedometer cable and bracket. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and converter. Remove heater hoses and fuel lines. Remove transaxle cooler lines.
  5. Remove both front wheels. Remove right-hand spoiler section and splash shield. Remove right and left brake calipers and support with wire. Remove right and left tie rod ends.
  6. Disconnect electrical connections at A/C compressor. Remove A/C compressor and mounting brackets. Support A/C compressor with wire in wheel opening. Remove front suspension attaching bolts. CAUTION: Support vehicle and transaxle weight properly during following steps.
  7. Lower vehicle. Support front of vehicle by placing 2 jack stands under core support. Position jack at rear of cowl with 4" x 4" x 6' timber spanning vehicle width. Raise vehicle enough to remove jack stands.
  8. Position 4-wheel dolly under transaxle assembly with three (3) 4" x 4"x 12" wood blocks as support. Allow support rails to hang free.
  9. Slightly lower vehicle weight onto 4-wheel dolly. Remove rear transaxle mount. Remove left front engine mount. Remove engine support-to-body mounting bolts behind right inner axle universal joint.
  10. Remove one (1) mounting bolt and nut from right-hand chassis side rail-to-engine mount bracket. Remove 6 strut attaching nuts. Disconnect torque rod attachment. Raise vehicle letting engine, transaxle and suspension rest on 4-wheel dolly.

Grand Am FWD Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain engine coolant. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect ECM connections and feed harness through bulkhead. Disconnect engine wiring harness. Disconnect vacuum hoses. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
  2. Disconnect A/C compressor, leave hoses attached and move aside. Disconnect transaxle strut (front). Disconnect fuel lines at TBI. Disconnect cooler lines and shifter linkage (automatic transmission). Disconnect clutch and shifter linkage (manual transmision).
  3. Disconnect downshift cable (automatic transmission). Disconnect throttle cable at TBI. Disconnect engine grounds. Remove multi-relay bracket. Raise and support vehicle. Remove power steering line bracket from engine.
  4. Remove front wheels. Disconnect brake calipers and secure to springs. Remove brake rotors. Remove knuckle-to-strut bolts, 2 per side. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and hangers, swing aside.
  5. Loosen remaining eight body-to-cradle bolts at ends. Remove one (1) bolt at each end of each cradle side, leaving one (1) bolt per corner. Place jack stands under front of body. Move hoist back to body pan with 4" x 4" x 6' timber between hoist and vehicle.
  6. Lift hoist and remove jack stands. Place dolly under engine/transaxle assembly with 4" x 4" blocks to maintain position on dolly. Lower vehicle, allowing engine/transaxle assembly to rest on dolly.
  7. Remove engine mount bolts and right front bracket. Remove remaining 4 cradle-to-body bolts. Lift vehicle off of engine/transaxle assembly. Separate engine and transaxle.

6000 FWD Automatic Transmission Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector. Disconnect all vacuum lines. Remove throttle and transaxle linkage at fuel injection assembly.
  2. Remove radiator and heater hoses. If equipped, remove A/C compressor from brackets and position aside with hoses connected. Remove front engine strut assembly. Remove transaxle-to-engine bolts, leaving 2 upper bolts in place.
  3. Remove front mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove starter. Remove drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove power steering pump and position aside. Disconnect fuel line at filter.
  4. Remove 2 rear transaxle support bracket bolts. With floor jack and block of wood under transaxle, raise engine until front mount studs clear cradle.
  5. Attach engine lift to engine. Remove 2 remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove engine.

6000 FWD Manual Transmission Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain coolant. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front engine mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove forward exhaust pipe. Remove starter motor and position aside with wiring attached.
  2. Remove flywheel housing inspection cover and lower bellhousing bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove all bellhousing-to-engine bolts.
  3. Remove forward torque reaction rod from engine and radiator core support. If equipped, remove A/C compressor and position aside with refrigerant lines connected.
  4. Remove emission hoses at canister. If equipped, remove power steering hoses. Remove all vacuum hoses. Disconnect wiring at solenoid and engine harness at bulkhead. Remove heater blower motor. Disconnect heater and radiator hoses.
  5. Disconnect throttle cable. Disconnect fuel line. Attach engine lift and remove engine.

Fiero RWD Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain coolant. Remove rear compartment lid. Do not remove torsion rod retaining bolts.
  2. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect throttle and shift cables. Disconnect heater hose at intake manifold. Remove vacuum hoses from all non-engine components. Disconnect fuel lines and filter.
  3. Disconnect fuel pump relay and oxygen sensor. On automatic transaxle models, disconnect transaxle cooler lines. On manual transaxle models, disconnect clutch slave cylinder. Disconnect engine-to-chassis ground strap.
  4. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses. Disconnect engine harness at bulkhead. If equipped, discharge A/C system. Disconnect and plug refrigerant hoses at compressor. Remove rear console.
  5. Remove ECM harness through bulkhead panel. Attach engine support fixture. Disconnect engine strut bracket, after marking bolt and bracket for reassembly. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
  6. On automatic transaxle models, remove drive plate-to-converter bolts. Disconnect parking brake cable. Remove calipers with hoses attached and wire out of way. Mark strut-to-knuckle relationship for reassembly reference and remove strut-to-knuckle bolts. Check rear camber and toe adjustments upon reassembly.
  7. If equipped, disconnect A/C wiring. Remove cradle bolts. Disconnect parking brake cable at cradle, using Brake Tool (J-34065). Lower vehicle. CAUTION: Support engine/transaxle and cradle assembly on dolly. Be sure to support outboard ends of lower control arms.
  8. Disconnect engine support fixture. Raise and support vehicle. Leave engine/transaxle and cradle assembly on dolly.

Firebird RWD Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Mark hinges for reassembly and remove hood. Drain cooling system. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside with hoses connected.
  2. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses from engine. Remove fan assembly. If equipped with manual transmission, remove upper half of fan shroud. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove fan shroud and radiator.
  3. Disconnect power steering hoses at pump. Disconnect bulkhead connector. Disconnect inlet and return fuel lines at flex hoses. Disconnect all vacuum hoses to engine.
  4. Remove ground strap from rear of cylinder head. Remove right-hand hush panel inside vehicle. Disconnect wiring harness from ECM harness connector.
  5. Remove right-hand splash shield from right fender and feed ECM harness out from inside vehicle. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core. Disconnect throttle cable and canister hose. Raise and support vehicle. Remove flywheel inspection cover.
  6. Remove drive plate-to-converter bolts. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove exhaust pipe at manifold.
  7. Remove exhaust pipe support at bellhousing. Disconnect catalytic converter at tailpipe joint. Remove converter and exhaust pipe assembly.
  8. Disconnect wiring and remove starter. Remove clutch fork return spring. Remove motor mount through bolts.
  9. Lower vehicle. Attach lifting equipment to engine. Support transmission with floor jack and block of wood.
  10. On manual transmissions, swing engine slightly to right to remove clutch swing arm from ball. On all models, remove engine from engine compartment.

6000 FWD Models

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Remove engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing rearward. If A/C equipped, remove AIR pump and bracket.
  2. Remove A/C compressor from bracket and set aside. Disconnect all vacuum hoses. Disconnect accelerator and TV cables. Disconnect engine harness from ECM and pull connector through front of dash.
  3. Disconnect radiator hoses from radiator. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Remove power steering pump and bracket, if equipped.
  4. Disconnect fuel lines at rubber hose connections at left side of engine. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect engine front mount-to-cradle nuts on right side. Disconnect battery cables from engine at starter and transaxle housing bolt.
  5. Remove starter. Remove transaxle inspection cover plate and remove drive plate-to-converter bolts on automatic transaxle models. Remove crankshaft pulley and remove all belts. Disconnect exhaust pipe.
  6. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolt at rear of engine. If equipped, disconnect power steering cut-off switch.
  7. Lower vehicle. Remove exhaust crossover pipe. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Make note of ground stud location. Place support under transaxle rear extension. Attach engine lift and remove engine.
  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain coolant. Remove rear compartment lid. Do not remove torsion rod retaining bolts.
  2. Remove intake flex duct. Disconnect throttle and shift cables. Disconnect heater hose at intake manifold. Remove vacuum hoses from all non-engine components. Disconnect fuel lines and filter.

  2. Disconnect transmission cooler lines at radiator. Remove radiator. Remove fan assembly. Remove heater hoses. Disconnect wiring and vacuum lines at engine.
  3. Disconnect throttle, cruise control, and detent linkages from carburetor. Remove power steering pump from engine and position aside with hoses connected.
  4. Raise and support vehicle. Remove exhaust pipes at manifolds. Remove converter inspection cover. Disconnect drive plate-to-converter bolts. Disconnect starter wires.
  5. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove motor mount through bolts. Disconnect fuel lines at fuel pump.
  6. Lower vehicle. Remove bracket holding AIR to converter pipes. Support transmission with jack. Attach engine lift. Remove engine, disconnecting wire from bracket at left rear of engine.

Bonneville & Grand Prix

  1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Remove negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner. Remove cooling fan, pulleys and belts.
  2. If equipped, disconnect A/C compressor and set aside. Remove radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove fan shroud assembly.
  3. Disconnect power steering pump and set aside. Disconnect fuel line and vacuum hoses. Disconnect battery ground cable from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor.
  4. Disconnect engine wiring harness connector, alternator and engine-to-ground straps. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect crossover pipe from exhaust manifolds.
  5. Use a scribe to mark relationship of torque converter-to-drive plate to assure proper reassembly. Remove transmission converter cover and torque converter bolts. Disconnect wiring at starter motor.
  6. Remove transmission-to-cylinder block attaching bolts. Remove front motor mount-to-frame bracket attaching bolts. Lower car and support transmission. Install engine lift. Remove engine.

Grand Am

  1. Raise hood and cover fenders. Scribe marks around hood hinges and remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter.
  2. Remove drive plate cover. Use a scribe to mark drive plate-to-torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly. Remove drive plate-to-torque converter bolts.
  3. Disconnect A/C compressor and wiring connector and set aside. Drain cooling system and remove lower radiator hose. Remove right front motor mount bolts. Remove right inner fender splash shield.
  4. Remove transaxle-to-engine mount bolt located between the transaxle and cylinder block. Remove rear motor mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove all heater hoses.
  5. Lower vehicle. Remove serpentine drive belt, alternator and power steering pump. Remove mass airflow sensor and intake duct. Disconnect electrical connector and remove cooling fan.
  6. Remove upper radiator hose and radiator. Position engine lift. Remove left upper transaxle mount. Remove master cylinder. Remove fuel lines and fuel rail. Remove TV and cruise control cable at throttle body. Remove all remaining engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. Remove engine.

4.3L (262") V6

  1. Mark hinges for reinstallation and remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system.
  2. If A/C equipped, disconnect compressor ground wire from mounting bracket. Remove electrical connector from compressor clutch. Remove compressor-to-mounting bracket bolts and position compressor aside.
  3. Remove fan, pulleys, and belts. Disconnect radiator and heater hoses from engine. Remove fan shroud assembly. Remove power steering pump-to-mounting bracket bolts and position aside.
  4. Remove and plug fuel pump hoses. Disconnect battery ground cable from engine. Disconnect vacuum lines from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable and downshift or accelerator valve cable.
  5. Disconnect oil and coolant sending unit switch connections at engine. Disconnect engine-to-body ground strap at engine. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter motor.
  6. Disconnect starter cable shield. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds and support exhaust system. Remove converter cover. Remove drive plate-to-converter attaching bolts. Remove transmission-to-engine attaching bolts.
  7. Remove motor mount bolts. Remove cruise control brackets, if equipped. Lower vehicle and support transmission. Attach engine lift and raise vehicle enough to remove mount through bolts.
  8. Raise engine and transmission alternately until engine can be disengaged from transmission. Remove engine.

5.0L (305") V8

  1. Mark hinges for reassembly and remove hood. Disconnect battery cables. Remove air cleaner. Drain cooling system. Disconnect radiator hoses and heater hoses. Remove radiator and fan shroud.
  2. Disconnect all wiring to engine. Disconnect accelerator linkage at intake manifold. Disconnect all fuel lines from engine. Disconnect all vacuum hoses to engine. If equipped, remove power steering pump and position aside with hoses connected.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Drain crankcase. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifold. Remove starter. Remove flywheel or converter housing inspection cover.
  4. Remove drive plate-to-converter bolts on automatic transmission equipped models. Remove motor mount through bolts.
  5. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts. Lower vehicle. Raise transmission using a floor jack. Attach engine lift to engine. Raise engine slightly. Remove motor mount-to-engine brackets. Remove engine.
