Checking Procedure for Park Pilot

Park Pilot Function Check / Distance Warning

The park pilot is automatically activated when the ignition is switched on and the reverse gear is engaged. The driver is informed of the switch-on check, malfunction messages and distance information acoustically via a loudspeaker. The measurement range is divided into 5 warning zones. As the driver approaches an obstacle, this is indicated according to the table below.

The maximum sensor detection range is limited to 100 cm.

Vehicles with Trailer Hitch If the Vehicle Is or Is Going to Be Equipped with a Mechanical Trailer Hitch (Permanent or Removable), the Park Pilot CAN Be Adjusted to This. to Do This, the Cable Loop (Marked "3") Must Be Cut at the System Wiring Harness - See "System Wiring Harness - Park Pilot".

A distance offset of 20 cm is set (via the software) for the two centre sensors. The continuous audio signal sounds as early as for distances of < 50 cm, directly in front of the centre sensors.

For vehicles with mechanical switches in the trailer socket (13-pin), the park pilot system is deactivated in trailer operation if the trailer cable is connected.

Self-Diagnosis

The system is initialised when the ignition is switched on and the reverse gear is engaged. A short switch-on audio signal sounds for 0.5 sec. If this does not occur, either the loudspeaker or the control unit is defective. The defective component can be determined by checking the sensor actuation system (soft cracking noise on the sensor diaphragm).

  • Sensor is not actuated: Control unit is defective.
  • Sensor is actuated: Loudspeaker is defective.

During operation, the control unit cyclically monitors the system components. The driver is informed of occurring errors by a low, continuous audio warning signal (600 Hz).

The defective system component can be analysed via fault diagnosis.

If a low audio warning signal emitted in 6 sec. cycles (3 sec. audio signal, 3 sec. pause), the vehicle-specific coding plug is not inserted correctly. If the coding plug is bridged without the prescribed vehicle-specific resistance, low audio warning signal (continuous audio signal) is emitted.

Fault Diagnosis

The following section describes fault diagnosis if a display is used. Fault diagnosis makes it possible to locate more accurately any occurring errors in system components. This mode is activated by disconnecting the control unit coding plug before switching on the ignition or engaging the reverse gear.

The vehicle rear must be kept clear of obstacles for a radius of at least 2 m to prevent interruption of system messages activated by the fault diagnosis.

Fault Diagnosis of Sensors

An initial sequence (3 sec), a pause (1 sec) and then an error sequence are cyclically emitted over the loudspeaker.

If more than one sensor is defective, the error codes of the individual sensors are emitted one after the other (each separated by sequence end in the form of a 2 second pause (audio signal off). If no sensor is defective, only a low audio warning signal is emitted cyclically in 6 sec. cycles (3 sec. audio signal, 3 sec. pause) to indicate that the coding plug has been disconnected.

Numbering of the Sensors

Sensor 1: rear right in direction of vehicle travel

Sensors 2, 3 and 4: increasing to the left.

Fault Diagnosis of Control Unit

An initial sequence (3 sec), a pause (1 sec) and then an error sequence (3 sec) are cyclically emitted over the loudspeaker.

Initial sequence:low, continuous audio warning signal (600 Hz)
Error sequence:low, intermittent audio warning signal (600 Hz)

This indicates either defective control unit hardware (component, battery or sensor voltage, missing characteristic data) or a coding plug short circuit.
